Just finished reading many of the forums and broswing the web site.  Really is a great job being done by  those who are maintaining the site.  I am still working and not coming to the reunion.  I am sorry I am going to miss seeing so many classmates.  Hope everyone has a great time.  I do plan on retiring next year .  Wonder how many of you are still working?  Those who retire and are single what besides family is keeping you busy? Ginny-

Great to know you are checking in on the website. Sorry you can't be at the reunion.  It is shaping up to be a memorable time.  To load a picture:

On the menu to the left Under Member Functions click on "Edit Profile", on the next screen click on "Photo" in the top rt corner, on the next screen click on "upload a new photo".  That should get you started.

Would rally like to tour the school.  There seems to be more of it than I remember.  Maybe, just for old times sake, we can run the stairs in the gym - or at least watch Max run the stairs in the gym.

As far as keeping busy - I teed it up on Monday (shot a 79) and teed it up this afternoon (shot a 96).  So much for consistency.  Had a lot more laughs shooting 96 than 79, though.

I'd also really like to join the tour of the school.  Where's grammar check when you need it?

Tommy and I would also be interested in a tour of the High School. We're certain that 50 years has brought many changes and additions.

Looks as if interest in the BHS school tour is going to be huge.  It is scheduled for 10:00am Saturday August 16. Tim Moore is the Principal and he is going to personally conduct the tour. We are to meet in the lobby inside the front main entrance.  We are not to freely roam the halls without his approval. I hope he has had experience in herding cats. He's going to need it.  Does anyone remember which locker was theirs and what the combination was. I have heard that they have never changed.

Yahoo Helen...I'm so glad you'll be there instead of a proxy. I promise not to bring caviar. Rally!!! (I learned that from Dave Long.)

Dave, I didn't realize it was a misspelling, I thought you really meant rally...the kind we used to have before a football game....GO RAIDERS. Where do we buy tickets to watch Max run the stairs? Sounds like a great idea for a fundraiser to increase the class treasury. I still owe you guys an ice cream cone.

Marv, it was locker 127, combination 34-19-26. HAH!!! I lied. I couldn't even remember it in 1964.

My track locker was # 87.  The combination, we had to supply our own locks, was R39, L17, R3.  My Marine Corps service # was 2324024, my M16 was an experimental weapon with no serial number but was outfitted with a Starlight scope, my 1911 Colt 45 serial number was 300311C.  I'm sorry, but I can't remember my phone number or address, but I do live somewhere in Kansas.  My golf handicap is 11.3.  My first "date" was with Marsha Hutson (my dad drove - we went to a movie at the Castle Theater on East Washington St.)  My first car was a 1954 Chevy Belaire 4-door sedan with a 2 speed powerglide transmission - it's one redeeming factor was the overhead lights didn't go on when the back doors were open!  I'm sorry, but I can't remember my phone number or address, but I do live somewhere in Kansas.  What are we all doing next month?  There's something on the calendar....I'll have to go look.

Dianne Shaffer:

Thanks for the head's up on the new photo on your profile.  I appreciated it.  That's a really nice photo of the two of you.  Sorry I haven't taken the time to meet him.

I, personally, won't share photos of myself or family on line.  I'll just have to see you in person for that.  I prefer my privacy.  Are you moving to Austin?

See you soon at the reunion.

Harriett (Holly) Rust (Wood)

I'm sorry you won't be there Ginny!  It would be fun to catch up. In answer to your question about work,  I think I have now flunked retiring twice.  I left my job at KIPP (a national network of inner city charter schools) in Sept. 2009.  Started consulting with a fledgling non-profit named EdVillage working in South Africa in Jan. 2010.  My former boss at KIPP was one of the founders.  Continue working for them as a consultant and with other charter schools around the country.  I am getting more selective about what I say "Yes" to, but computers make it possible to continue consulting and still get around visiting the kids and grandkids.

As to what one does to keep busy...there are so many volunteer opportunities with important organizations and programs one could fill all 24 hours each day...there are more books I want to read than I will ever have time to...there are more people with whom to renew friendships than time to do so.  Somehow, I find the days too short to do all the things I'd like to do.  So I plow on, often beeing pushed by my kids who introduce me to a myriad of new experiences.

The numbers Marvin reports are exciting to me as most of you know, the first time I attended a gathering was the one two years ago.  Guess that is partly that I had children around for so many years coming back to a reunion never seemed to fit in with their activities and our budget.  I am really looking forward to seeing you all!  And the tour should be fun!

Terry (Max) Maxwell

Dave and Mel...

I'd like to respond to your idea of Max running the stairs in the gym.  If you plan to use it as a fund raiser for the class treasury, I will enter my guess right now... 0!!!  I could probably think of ideas to raise some money but that is definitely not one of them.

I can still remember the combination to my physical education Master lock that we had to purchase for $1.00 in Jr High...  0-14-36.  I also remember my locker number at the high school, but that combination is not in the memory bank any longer.  Wonder if I still have books in that locker?

08/01/14 11:38 AM #4554

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Holly, you have, as you usually do, made clear the feelings of so many. The three most touching points for me were the volunteerism, the books you'll never have time to read and the friends you want to see again. I'm so glad you can join us. And Wendy too. The cast of alumni will be incomplete with so many like Ginny unable to come, but they will all be with us in spirit. I wish everyone could be there.

Ginny, there are many things that keep me going these days. Since you asked, I'll give a brief rundown. Seeing my children on a regular basis is tops. They have become my best friends and I can't get enough of them. Staying creative and active as an artist means continually being alert and perceptive to all things in life. I doubt that I'll ever stop thinking or acting in that way. As others already know, for nearly a decade I've been writing several books on my Russian experiences with the first book now in the final editing phase. There are another dozen things going on that occupy my time from the minute I awake to the moment I collapse each day. Curating exhibitions for the Healing Arts program at the Univ. of Chicago, helping out with the Alzheimer's Association, consulting with the Odyssey collection at Purdue University NC, and working to strengthen my condo assoc. community are among those daily activites. So, you should get on that retirement bandwagon and realize that your job isn't finished yet. There is no end to what you can still accomplish.

Max, what's the problem? Those knees not what they used to be? That speed not as fast? Memory a little rusty? Don't worry, a couple of stiff drinks and life seems just like it used to be...beautiful, peaceful and simple.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Ed Stanfield

I have often said that I am not retired, I just dont go to work any more.

That is true, and it is not. Malinda and I had been "training" our oldest son to take the reins of the company and then she got cancer.. He was forced to take on more responsibility for things he knew nothing about as I was occupied with mundane things like the chemo room, hospitals, surgeries and the like. As her illness progressed, it took more of my time to help her and finally I told Ed Jr that he had to run the business as my full time job was now his mother. After she passed, I told him that I would not come back to the company and take his job from him.. He is doing a good job and I am proud of all he has accomplished.. Now I am his consultant and spend a few mornings a week discussing changes he wants to make as well as other issues.. I remain the sole stockholder, President and owner, but he does all the work.

I foster a 3 legged mutt for the local no kill shelter and that animal has wormed his way into my heart. I cannot adopt him as he lost a leg to cancer and the shelter will not relinquish ownership due to his future medical needs. Since they own him, they provide for his vet care

I fish, read, watch my grandson play football... better not ask me about him unless you have some time ..

I continue to shoot a lot and spend a couple of days on the range, but mostly, I do what eveer I damn well please ....

Terry (Max) Maxwell

Mel...

I didn't say that I couldn't do it, only that I am not going to do it.  Was in Upper Michigan for a few days last week and I climbed enough stairs... like hundreds, while hiking, to remind me that I don't have to do that anymore if I don't want to.  As Ed put it..."I can now do whatever I damn well please!"  The knees are fine but the quads sure burned on some of those climbs last week.

Max, what a load off my mind. I was afraid it had something to do with old age. You and Ed clearly have the same philosophy. Makes me jealous...but wait....that's my philosophy, too. Guess we'll have to find out what Dave thinks. Being a Marine and all, he may not take this lightly. You guys are the best.

Happy Birthday Marv and Mel.  Just a note for those touring the High School... Lots of changes, lots of things are still the same. But take note that the seniors now have their own separate lunch room and the lobby has flat screens just in case you get bored on your way to class.

I would also like to say Happy Birthday Mel and Marv and thank you for all you have done to keep our class in touch with one another.  I am looking forward to seeing all of you.
