Milan,

Was Buckys located at the corner of Towanda and Empire?  Also can you put the names of the Shattertones on here?  I  have CRS!!!

Where do you get those old Pantagraph pictures?  I'm wanting one from our senior skip day at State Farm park?  Also I'd like to give Eric (my son-in-law) a copy of the one with his dad (Donny Penn) in it.  Thank you for any help you can give me.

Suz

Bucky's replaced Sandy's at Empire and Towanda Ave. I can only name Huey Landry and Dave Gaston. I have old age syndrome. I can't remember enough. (laugh)

Suzi, if you know the dates you want, the Bloomington Library and ISU Library have pantagraph archives on microtape. Most of the pictures come out pretty bad but it's a good source.

With the Shattertones, the guitar player on the right is Tim Irvin (Trinity), I believe is his name.

Butch Ekstam, or something like that, was the drummer, and Kim Marriner (not pictured) was also a vocalist.

While the band may have billed itself as "The Shattertones with Dave Gaston" in Bloomington, in surrounding small towns, posters often advertised "The Shattertones with a Colored Singer"  or even "The Shattertones with a Negro Singer".  I kid you not.

Dave actually broke down some Central Illinois barriers.

Also, about 10 years ago, I talked to either the former Shattertones keyboard player or the other guitar player at length.  He said in later years he played with Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders (Miami).  I told him I saw Cochran at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago circa 1967, he said he was there playing as one of the CC Riders.

Oh yeah, I knew Tim Irvin too. Told you about this memory thing. (laugh)

I'm getting there Milan...I talked to that ex Shattertone (with Wayne Cochran) for at least 15-20 minutes one on one, and can't remember his name or what he played.

Thanks everyone.  I guess age is catching up with me.  That picture must have been taken after 64 because Rich Macy use to play with them.

Shattertones keyboard is Tom Becker moved on as a professional. Bob Landry (Baby Huey) went to Trinity, playing guitar on the left.  Judy, GREAT JOB on the rest of the Shattertones.  Rich Macey (AKA Mace) was once a guitarist, but died from Leukemia right after we graduated from high school because he refused to take his meds. After Tom Becker left, Kim Mariner who lived on E. Oakland Avenue replaced him and also sang. She graduated in "65" from BHS. She once dated Donnie Istead (U-High), but later married a son of Schlitz Brewing Company owners from Wisconsin.  My husband Tommy and Donnie were close friends at that time. Dave Gaston (Gat) sang in San Diego for a while, but eventually returned to B-ton area.  He sang in our wedding and we chummed around with all of them.  Tim Irvin's Dad owned Irvin Brother Pepsi and was in charge of The Housing Authority.  Istead's Dad was a Professor at ISU and had a home at Lake Bloomington. Jack, you're correct in that it was Tom Becker that played with Wayne Cochran.  I wasn't aware that The Shattertones solicited Gat being colored, but maybe so. Tim Irvin played backup in a Clint Eastwood movie thinking it was "Anyway Which Way But Loose" with the Chimp.

Tim Irwin gained some notieriety in the late 1960's or early '70's in a band called "Timothy P and the Rural Route 3" This all took place in Colorado as I recall..

My younger sister Amy was good friends with Tim and hung the nickname of "Timothy P" on him

Timothy P and the Rural Route 3 came about after the Shattertones disbanded in the late 60's.

Timothy P and the Rural Route Three are still around in Colorado.  Living in Evergreen for 20 years, I saw them at the Little Bear.  They were fun!

Well Ed, the name stuck.  The Pantagraph used this name for a headline in a 2008 article.  Amy was good with nicknames.  I answered to "Popsicle" for a number of years.

I used to talk to Dave G. quite a bit and Patti Miller used to travel to the smaller towns with the band, so a lot of the following is not new to me.

And Holly, "Timothy P." is still listed in CO, so you can dial them up for an encore whenever you're so inclined, lol.

"Where were you in ‘62? With Tim P., maybe?

Further history was made when Dave Gaston joined the band, and shattered not only tones but racial barriers: he was black, and the phenomenon of a white rock band with a black singer was almost unprecedented hereabouts.

How unprecedented?

Irvin once told us that some of the venues booking the Shattertones would put a sign out front announcing “The Shattertones, with a colored singer.”

Other band members included the late Rich Macy on bass guitar, Don Isted on rhythm guitar, Butch Ekstam on drums and Kim Marriner on female vocals."

And Holly, while we're on the topic of Sarah Brightman, lol, when you mentioned your daughter's birthday treat, I thought of the following.  If you have'nt seen this, it's interesting.

Ahh yes the Shattertones, good band, ugly jackets but always fun.  Huey did go to Trinity and beyond being a musician was equally a pretty good golfer.  There are stories involving a March dip in Lakeside, we have witnesses but we'll go no further.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Ed, I just saw your message about Melinda. It is very tough news, but you cannot let it stop the hope you have. She has been a real fighter and she will continue that battle with enormous strength. My love and best wishes to both of you.

As some of you may know I am in Moscow, Russia visiting old friends and arranging for exhibitions of my work here. I should be able to return to the beautiful exchange with all of you after the 13th. Seems like I have missed out on a great round of debate about the old grade schools. I also have some Oakland School stuff I can send.

Just for the record, I just want you to know that I have shared this sight with several Ruskies, so we have now gone international.

Da Svidanya my friends.

Everyone,

It's after midnight and I am not able to sleep.  I received some very sad news at 10:00 this evening (Labor Day).  My closest and dearest friend and our classmate Sue Watson Ehrmantraut passed away about 30 minutes earlier.  I will miss her so much!!  I hoped that she would make it back from her accident but I guess it just proved to be too much for her.  Please keep Mike, Jeff and Angie and the rest of her family in your prayer.

I will miss her so much as she was like a sister to me for over 50 years.  I can't imagine what it's going to be like not having her here to talk and laugh with!!  Enjoy her God as we sure did!!!

Judy

Thanks for the information, Judy. A huge loss for us all. God bless the family. Not sure if I knew anyone who could smile like Sue. She will surely be missed.

Judy, sorry you had to post such sad news.  I know you and Sue were very close.  A great loss for all of our classmates.  My prayers are for Sue not suffering anymore and for her family.

I am so sorry to hear about Sue. Anyone who knew her loved her enthusiasm and will miss her terribly. My prayers go out to Mike, Angie and Jeff during this time of grief and recovery.
