It's Thursday - That mus mean it's time for a little humor....

May be an image of drink and text that says 'A priest, a rabbit and a minister walk into a bar. The bartender asks the rabbit "what'll ya have?" The rabbit says "I dunno. I'm only here because of Autocorrect."'

I wonder how many of you are experiencing the 100 degrees and more, like we are.  We are on our 30th 100+ day.  We have a total of 29 of those days in a row and counting.  Also, they are forecasting 100+ for all of next week.

We always have the silly retort here that we could cook an egg on our sidewalk in the summer.   I'm quite sure we could cook a whole meal on the sidewalk this summer.

Hope you are all well and cool as you've always been, but with airconditioning too!

Love to all!

Linda

Linda, in Bill Flick's question for today in The Pantagraph, he gave today's date, July 15, 1936 as the hottest day in Bloomington-Normal.  It was 114 degrees. That date capped 12 straight days in which the temperature hit 104 degrees or more.  I can't imagine enduring that with no Air-Conditioning.  I do remember as a child not having air and it being really hot.  The year I had Chicken Pox it was VERY hot.   We sat in front of the door to try to get as much breeze as we could.  My Grandma fanned me to try to keep me cool, but with being hot and trying not to scratch, I was miserable!  My neighbor went to the store and brought me some ice cream. I am grateful for air condtioning these days.

II know the first person in a discussion like this has no chance, as others top the original story. I know in the St. Louis area we can get very hot, but with 2 major rivers and numerous smaller ones, the hmiidity can generate a miserable heat index.  A few years ago it got hot enough to explode the rear window out of our daughter's car--and that was not supposed to happen.

Linda - I don't want yu to feel bad but the only day I turned on my air this year was to test it, to make sure it still worked. I always heard if you don't like the weather in IL stick around it will change. I don't leave it off because of the electric bill, I leave it off because heat doesn't bother me like cold. I leave my stat on 76 all winter. This summer I bought an oscilating fan. They go left to right, it keeps me comfortable. I hope your tmperature goes back to normal next week. If you decde to fix breakfast on the sidewak let me know, I want to see that. That reminds me when I was 8 years old. The neighbor was 7,  we fried dew worms in his mothers electric skillet. She came home and asked what we were going to do with the worms. We told her we were going to eat them. We heard on WJBC there was a lot of protein in worms. Glad she caught us.

I remember hearing the radio news, as a young kid, that people who were attending a baseball game in St. Louis, for the Cardinals, had heart attacks from the extreme heat and the humidity.

Richard:  In the Winter I keep my thermostat at 67-68.  In the Summer I set it for 73-74.  If it gets humid from rain, we set it up to 75 for the refrigeration to be more effective.  It works well though.

I love the guy that invented refrigeration!

You all are the coolest!

David Long:

What?  Remember Vicks?  Doesn't everyone still use it occasionally?

I 'inherited ' my mothers' boyfriends!

You wake up with Charlie Horse.

Start your day with Will Power.

Spend the day with Arthur Itis.

Then, go to bed with Ben Gay!

Just the smell/ aroma of those, trusted and true balms, can remind us of our childhood and our parents!

It can almost make you feel that you are loved!

My husbnd still uses Vicks regularly.  It helps tremendously with the neuropathy in his feet.

Should anyone see the news on Yahoo or TV regarding buoys and razor wire, which, our Governor ordered to be placed in the Rio Grande to deter immigrants;.... it is true.

People are getting harmed by the process and deprived of water, etc.

I'm afraid this guy is going to run for president or something else.

Dave, I was told I never was right and usually got left. But I had a good time, As for Vick's, Granny use to bathe us in it. She wouldn't let us have Smith Bros. cough drops, no it had to be Vick's cough drops.

I am reading a book set in 1100 AD England.  There are references to a Duc Theobald.  Any relation, Marv or Mel?

07/20/23 05:00 PM #10602

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Wendy, it isn't likely. Although Theobald is a common name in England and France (Thiebaud), we trace our heritage back to 1723 in Moerzheim, Germany (formerly Prussia) near the border of Alsace Lorraine in France. There are numerous references in English history and literature, most of them using Theobald as a first rather than family name. A couple of examples are: 1) Theobald of Bec (1090-1161) preceded Thomas Becket as the Archbishop of Canterbury following the Norman Conquest in 1066; 2) there was a long line of Frendh Ducs that began with Theobald I, who ruled the House of Lorraine from 1213-1220; and 3) Theobald Pontifex was a character in Samuel Butler's semi-autobiographic book "The Way of All Flesh" in the 1800s. Most notable among the English Theobald's was Lewis Theobald (1688-1744). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Theobald) who was a satirical author and is credited by some scholars as having edited Shakespeare's plays, which led to a long and bitter dispute with Alexander Pope.

The irony of all this is that our dad's name was Lewis Theobald. So, I repeat, it isn't likely. I'd love to know what book you are reading.

Another great mini-reunion is behind us. Marvin said there was 26 or 27 people there.  Patty took some pictures but not sure if she will post them.  No others were taken that I know of.

When I get up on those tall chairs, I'm there for the duration so I didn't get to speak to some people that I wanted to. But I just wanted everybody to know, Liz Spillman and Sharon Green were at my table and we did look around and was happy to see some people who hadn't attended for awhile and missed the ones who usually attend that weren't there.   So if anybody thinks you won't be missed or nobody really cares if you show up or not, be sure to know it's great to see you when you attend and you are missed when you don't.

The next mini reunion is at The Barrell House in December. Hope your calendars are marked so we can have a big crowd there.

Thanks Marvin for all you do:  sending out postcards, and getting the places reserved for us.  You do so much to keep out group together.  And also for keeping this website going.

Sandy:

So glad you had a good time and that there was a good turn-out.    I know what you mean by those high stools.   I find my left ankle swells when I sit on a higher chair or stool.  It really gets uncomfortable for me.  I hope you are ok with sitting on them.

Thanks for the report on the mini-reunion!

Love ya, Linda

Karen Sue (Suzi) Denton (Merritt)

Glad there was a good turnout for the mini reunion.  Dave wasn't up to par.  He had a new pacemaker and defibrillator put in a week ago and he can't drive so that's why we didn't go.  Sandy I know what you mean about the tall chairs.   Boy I get on one (thanks to some male friends) I feel like I need to be tied into the chair.
