Dianne was wearing a helmet.

My thoughts.

If you don't wear a helmet and you leave half your brains on the street but are still alive who is going to take care of you for the next fifteen or twenty years? Your insurance and savings will go first. Then who is responsible? Your kids?  Oh, I guess the state will pick up the tab with medicare and medicaid.

Freedom isn't free and neither are hospitals and nursing homes.

So wear your helmet. If not for yourself for the rest of us.

Rest in peace Lonny Snow.

Lonnie Snow was our neighbor on Priscilla Lane! He was a great guy and is sorely missed by all who knew him! We have many fond memories with him in our Illinois neighborhood! He had a wonderful family who continues to struggle with his absence! You're right Marilyn...........WEAR YOUR HELMETS, however those don't always save you either, but do help with exposure to the cement! Prayers continue.............................

Please understand that I am not necessarily advocating not wearing safety gear when doing danger ous orpotentially dangerous things. I do believe however that it is not the business of governent to require those things. My Grandson is a motorcycle racer and he NEVER gets on that bike without all his protective gear... from the tips of his racin boots to the top of his helmeted head... but that is his parents decision, not the government's. I drive high performance bass boats, but not without lifejackets... I reload thousands of bullets every year, but not when I have had so much as a sip of alcohol... nor do I shoot after havin a snort..

Must agree with Marilyn which is the point of the California law.

Rod,

Maybe it has been your insight and racing tips that got me going, but I watched the Derby and Preakness and now am totally stymied with the withdrawl of I'll Have Another from the Belmont for the Triple Crown. I have a neighbor who has watched the previous races with me who keeps forgetting the names of the horses, insisting that I'll Have Another was named All You Can Eat. I assured her this wasn't right. So, my question is this...what happens to the bets placed on a horse that is scratched....especially at the last minute?

Do the bettors get a refund or do they just lose the money? I think the trainer did the right thing pulling the horse with its injuries, but now what? I do like Union Rags and Dullahan. Great story in the Trib about Paynter, so maybe there is something there as well.

Please let me know how I can get my money back from my neighbor...HELP!!! OR, should I just call Ed and invite him over for a cigar and a bourbon? OOPS, how's that diet going Mr. Stanfield?

Ed and Marilyn:

Texas has a helmet law.  However, government had to make the move because dumb assesses didn't show the sense that God gave a goose to wear protective gear on cycles.

This led to financial ruin for their families (not to mention caretaker stress) and a financial stress upon societal tax monies when they needed subsidized funds.   The overwhelming costs rose so drastically that government had to protect people from themselves.

I understand what you mean Ed, about government not being there to tell you what to do.  But we do live among the tyranny of the majority.  Sadly, everyone doesn't use your wisdom in making life choices.   Guess we need more Ed Stanfield's in the world!

Linda

Linda, I second that, WE NEED MORE ED'S IN THE WORLD!!! Amazingly we are getting "less" of Ed....WOW.

Ed, congratulations on all fronts. What a fantastic accomplisment. I can't wait to see you all trim and buff. That is just great news, more for the health reasons, but I love hearing how much better you feel. I'll bet your family is real proud of you, I sure am.

Makes me want to go swim another hundred laps today. That'll get me up to 8+ miles so far.

Linda,

When I began this diet program, I wrote my weight goalof 175 on a sheet of paper that I keep with me... and in that sense, I am almost there. In another sense however, I have some clothes i want to wear again and I am not there yet, soooooo....

I understand........you are so close why not go for it.   You have really stuck well to your endeavor and worked it out!   How is Melinda doing?  I'm sure she is very proud of you!

Hi Suzy:

The closest fire to me is Ruidoso, NM.  We aren't even seeing smoke.   We were getting smoke and particulate air matter last month from the Arizona fire for a few days only.

My daughter in Boulder, CO says they are in good shape.

How about Helen, Holly, Susan Ford, Dave Harvey Wellman, etc?

Linda

Smoke with regards to Ft. Collins fires are currently 10% contained, however Westminster, CO, where our son lives (Denver area) are noticing smoke affects from the fires! All is well and unnoticalbe in Colorado Springs, CO. Also, I'm thinking that Holly mentioned she may be in California right now, I don't know for sure? Thanks for your concerns!

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Ed, you are the man.  You really have done well.  I'm like Mel, it makes me want to go out and play 36 holes of golf, in a cart, and have a soda or beer every 6 holes. Ha!!

Mel, here is the story.  First of all, the only people who can declare a horse scratched is a track stewart.  Sometimes a vet will do it, but it will always show up as a stewarts decision on the records. Once the parade of horses has begun, it is almost impossible to scratch a horse.  Now if the horse drops over dead, that's one thing.  But, anything besides that, a full blown investigation would take place.

If you bet the horse on a Sportsbook, as odds to win, (your wonderful bookie , or out of Vegas, or on a bet sheet), your money is gone. SORRY.  If the horse is scratched or deemed a NO Start by the track, you get a refund.  You will also get a refund if your horse is included in any exotic bet, like a daily double, pick 3, pick 4, exacta, trifecta, superfecta, or quinella.  Now when it comes to friendly bets, like yours, I guess you will just have to work it out.

Now, as far as the race, it was ashame about I'll Have Another.  As far as the track, it was great.  When he was scratched, it created a betting frenzy.  Opinions are just that.  But, not to bore you with all my reasons why, I would have never put a dime on I'll Have Another.  My reasons are several, but here is a clue.  If you have followed the racing gods.  Even though the horse could be fully recovered in 6 months to a year, and most likely race again, all involved decided to retire the horse.  I really think the horse would have finished in the middle of the pack at best.

Hey Jack, what did you think of the big fight?

Hope everyone in the recent MC wrecks are healing fast and doing better.

Rodney,

Pac got screwed.  The WBO is investigating.  Bob Arum claims that prior to the decision, the other guy told him “I gave it my best, but I just couldn’t beat this guy”.  I believe Arum, and think Pac won going away.

Having said that, I think Pac has lost either some hunger or skill over the last year or so.

Dave is doing much better.  Two small spots are gone and right now the cancer is in remission.  He walks 5 to 7 miles a day.

I'm fine, but I sure wish I could loss this weight!!!
