Jack, should we know Elaine Maurer or any of these gals?

Helen, I make no determination of who anyone should know, but many people do because they are only a year younger.

Jack, I remember the name Elaine Maurer, but I just can't place her.  That's great that you have all these archived pictures that you post.  Very interesting.

It’s hard to know who knew who in HS, but I know that the people I knew were as deeply involved with that Oakland School ‘65 bunch as they were with most members of our own class. I know Paul Wade married and divorced Georgia Wiley, and Steve Huber married and divorced Nancy Robinson. I know that Bob Lehman (’63) married and divorced Cheryl Smith. I know Mike Kaluf dated Georgia Wiley, and I know that Steve Jetton and Rod Hayes know her because I have pictures of them standing in her driveway.
I also know that Terri Baxter was a childhood friend of Nancy Robinson's, that I dated Nancy during’62-‘63, and that Nancy’s and my life have been so coincidentally intertwined for 48 years that it defies believability.  Last I heard from Nancy was about 3 weeks ago, when she asked me if I knew Sue Ehrmantraut and whether I knew that she had died.
And speaking of Sue, she got very tight with the Class of ’65, including people in that Oakland’65 picture. Some were at her funeral. The next message shows how she used this web site as a communications tool with them. I know Sue doesn't  mind me sharing this e-mail, as she shared mine and Joanne Zabel’s....a short time before her accident.
As for Elaine Maurer, she was Steve Norton’s girlfriend in '63-'64. In college, Dave Holt and I drove to Daytona Beach and back with her and Judy Shoup. We got to know each other pretty well on that trip. I also understand that Elaine is considered the one that “held up the best” in her class.
I can go on, but I don’t know how you can come up with any stronger bonds than the ones I’ve just mentioned. So, when you put up pictures, it’s always a crapshoot of who knew who.  You just have to go with it.

Hey Jack, I had dinner the other night with Joanne (Zabel) Dorneden. She and Sandi (Shepherd) Whiteley, both from the Class of '65, meet Janet Melton and Charlotte Rustemeyer a couple times a year at Sandi's place in North Carolina. I was telling Joanne about our website, and if she got on, and went to your profile, she could see Janet's picture from an after-prom. She has tried and said your profile has a lock on it. Could you send me that picture, so, I can send it on to her?

Attached are three 1963 prom pics. I'll also go unlock my profile for today so she can see things in context....if she cares to.
By the way, I checked the "Reunion Pictures" part of the web site a little while ago and it has had something like 1297 hits, so somebody is looking at the web site.

Jack,

I really enjoy seeing and hearing about a lot of the members of the class of '65.  When you live across the street from the Shoup family for most of your life you get to know people from that class almost as well as you know the ones in your own class.  I most certainly remember Elaine Mauer as she was probably Judy Shoups best friend.  Hearing these names again stirs up alot of fun times.  "Thanks for the memories".

It's coming back...........Joanne Zabel use to date Craig Ewald (Trinity 64).  I know because I was dating Ric Steppe (Trinity 64 deceased) during that time.  It took me a while, but finally came into my mind. Jack, I was probably having a Senior Moment AKA CRS!

If you lived across from Judy, Judy, then you know that Judy could be “the trip” of the trip.

In Dalton, Georgia, we sent her out to inquire about a motel rate. Within 30 seconds she comes back running and screaming. What frightened her was 3 or 4 skinny little guys dressed like the Village People. She could have knocked them all out.
In Chattanooga, low on funds, we got a downtown room, at my suggestion, of course, for  about $5 with tax. Big mistake. Like a wino hideout. Judy said “I’m not sleeping on these sheets”, then tore down the dirty plastic shower curtains to sleep on. (Not sure that ever materialized though.)
I think Elaine and Judy are still tight. When Nancy Robinson called a couple of years ago, she said “Guess who I have here with me, and guess what we are talking about?” The trip to Daytona, of course. Nancy put me on the phone with both of them (Elaine and Judy) and we had some laughs. Their memory was amazing. They had met up in Bloomington then, and I believe they said they still get together regularly, even though they live in different states.
I might also add that some of the people from ’65 visit this web site now and then.

Jack,

I haven't seen or talked to Judy for many years but I remember things we did from time to time. They make me laugh and I wonder sometimes why our mothers didn't kill us.  When our mothers were still alive and lived on Front Street still I would see one of the kids fairly often.  Judy of course was in Florida so her mom went to visit her more than she came to her mom.  I would see Roger quite abit though.  Then after their mom moved to Florida, Larry and his family lived in the house for many years.  We had great fun in that neighborhood growing up! The Shoups moved into the neighborhood when we were 8 and 9 years old if I remember right.  My grandparents lived in our house and when my grandmother passed away when I was 7 we moved in with my grandfather.  I think it was just a couple years later that the Shoups moved in after their father died.  My father died just two years after that.  Our mothers became very close as they were the first two young widows in the neighborhood.  Our families did alot of things together.  Good Memories!!!

Dave and I went to the Bloomington homecoming football game Friday night.  (it was a liitle breezy out there.)   It started out like we were going to get blown away but it all turned around late in the second quarter.  Finally Bloomington looked good (they need to give the bears some pointers).

The Band did a great job!

Judy, was that just east of Clinton Street?  I seem to have the vaguest memory of some Shoup activity around there.........or am I all wet?  Didn't Patti Miller live around there also?

I believe Patti lived on East Olive.  Judy McLean, Susi Denton, Flemings, and Susie you know the rest, all lived on Felton Place. Later on, Eddie, Deba, Rodney and Bill lived in the house next to Susi on the corner of Clinton and Felton Place, but Bill was in the Marines while his folks lived there.  I remember lots of good times on that block. Oh yeah, Susan Ford and the McConahays lived on that block too.

Well y'all...

Ed, go to Missouri and have a few pops and get your feet off the ground.  Shortly after also visiting battlefields, our Treasurer* is at it again...off to wine country on the West Coast where he will presumably taste the goods........so why can't you?

*Reminds me I have to check the bank again.

09/27/11 11:34 AM #1977

My concern is that our Treasurer has primary access to the  sizeable class donations bank account, and he seems to be traveling every couple of weeks now, which he claims to be merely coincidental.

(DISCLAIMER:  Past activity is no indicator of future performance, and Steve's stewardship of your funds is good as gold..............without the recent drops, of course).

Jack,

Yes, that was the block between Clinton and Robinson and it was dead end on Robinson at Prairie Farms which is Beer Nuts now then picked up on the other side of the viaduct and stopped at Washington School.  I lived at 807 E. Front and Shoups lived at 806 E. Front.  Helen had it wrong I never lived on Felton Place just spent alot of time there at Suzi Denton's house.  Patti Miller in grade school lived on the corner of Monroe and Clinton but by the time we got in high school they had moved to the 800 block of E. Olive Street (just two blocks over from us).  Besides the Shoups and my family on Front Street we had Ed Burwitz '63, Jerry Jones '63, Pat Edwards and her older sister Katy and brother Charles and for a while there was Gary and Greg Woith across from us and between Shoups and Jones house.  Gary was older not sure maybe class of '61 or '62 and Greg was my younger brothers age they graduated in '67.  Between the ones who lived in that neighborhood and the ones who visited in that neighborhood it could be a crazy place to be!!!!  Never a dull moment!

Jack  -  C'mon man, you gotta keep a closer eye on Jetton.  You know he ain't out West tasting no   Wine.  It's cooling off in the Midwest, so he most likely had his racquet restrung, and he's out on some West Coast Senior Tennis Tour.  Next thing you know, he'll be telling ya'll that he's going to Florida to see how the Orange crop is doing.

Judy,

Thanks, that explains my visions of Shoups running in and out of the house in that neighborhood.
I lived at 702 E. Front for a little bit, and am familiar with the area. Then, Steve Jetton lived in the general vicinity, and we used to drift into your parts now and then, and I remember that it was always a hub of activity.
With Patti, I once “borrowed” Norton’s car and drove her back home to her parents. She had had her first exposure to demon alcohol, and since it was tequila, things did not work out. .  She remembers very well. I knew it was in the vicinity, and I was by her house once or twice otherwise, specifically remembering her late brother “Ace”.

Rod,

Sorry, but you know our buddy Jetton is a crafty and resourceful fellow.  I've got my best guys down there and he still slips the net.

Jack,

The price of admission at these events is a bottle of good bourbon or other spirits of your choice, along with approved cigars... and of course, a suffiency of new lies to keep everyone entertained for the trip.. we also actually learn a lot as well.. but we will never admit it to an outsider!

Ed,

I could very easily get used to your kind of trip.  You'd have me rooting for the South within 1/2 hour.

Judith (Judy) McLean (Wilder)

Jack,

If you lived at 702 E. Front then you must have lived close to Mary Lou Dollins (homecoming queen '62).  She lived in the middle of that block on the south side of the street.  Cindy Carey lived on the northeast corner of the 600 block of E. Front Street (think it was Clayton and Front) during grade and Jr. high school.  I can't remember when and where they moved to but know that she ended up in Normal her senior year.  The twins Carolyn & Sherilyn Hirsch lived either in the 500 or 600 block of Front for awhile too.  They were in our neighborhood alot too.  I know we used to walk by their house when we walked uptown but can't remember exactly which block it was in. Steve Jetton lived somewhere not far from there but not sure where he lived maybe Clayton or Grove Street.  I lived in the 700 block of E. Olive before we moved two blocks to my grandparents house on Front Street when I was 7yrs. old so that's been the area I lived in my whole life until I got married and left home in 1966.  My mom lived in that house until 1997 when she had a stroke and we moved her into the Adelaide apartments. It was a great area to live we had some great times.  I remember in the summer that we would play kick the can with who knows how many kids until it was so dark that we couldn't see anymore.  These kids now days don't really know how to have fun!
