Jack... I believe that Judy was telling you that was their "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" skit, so I'm thinking that wasn't just a fashion statement at their school every day, but I could be wrong.

I'm also thinking that nobody from Lincoln School reads this site.  Everybody is talking about all of the other schools in town except Lincoln.  Excuse me, Steve Jetton went there in Kindergarten as mentioned earlier. (but he didn't have anything nice to say about it though... maybe that's why he left?!)

E YI E YI OH,  Max

Regina Sue Peterson Koppenhoefer, who was the bald headed Principal at Horatio G. Bent School?  Also, wasn't Mr. Wells superintendent at some point?  Good to hear from you Sue Peterson!  Let's hear more of your input.  I had forgotten about Mrs. Lesson having a baby in the middle of the school year.  Also, I believe it was Miss Gathman not Mrs. Gathman who never married, right?  Jack Habich, I'm thinking you went to Bent School for 1 or 2 years also because we all went to your house on a field trip because your parents originated from Czeckoslavakia? (probably misspelled)  Am I remembering correctly?

Max - I wanted to be at a school where I could be the fastest runner, so I had to leave Lincoln.   Of course, when I got to Emerson, there was Danny Hale!

Max........I was not thinking class play, even after Judy told me. I was thinking class picture..duh.  I did wonder why all the girls dressed in those skirts.

Helen, I did go to Bent for one year, 7th grade, when it became a Jr. High.  In the 8th, it was off to BJHS.  My parents were not from Czechoslovakia but from other parts of Europe, as am I.  At the time, we would have lived at 305 W. Monroe, but I don't remember a field trip. Any clues?

Jack, I really don't know precisely what I'm remembering, however do remember meeting your parents and knew they were from another country.  Am I remembering that your Mother had a thick accent?  Yes, I do remember you living on Monroe Street, however don't remember the circumstances when I met your folks, but I do recall that I was with other classmates.  Maybe Judy Danielson might be able to help me pick my brain, I don't know! CRS stinks!  Or Jack, maybe you might recall us meeting your parents on some occasion?  That's the only clues I can think of!!!!

I have found my report cards from Jefferson School and the teachers were:

1st grade:     Laura Belle Sageser

2nd grade:    Bernice Healy

3rd grade:     B. Wells

4th grade:     Mary C. Ellis

5th grade:     Mary C. Healy

6th grade:     Lillabelle Cooper

Helen,

I will have to think for a while about who was the principal at Bent (have lost some of my instant recall). I think Mr. Kemp, who was our Social Studies teacher in 7th grade, was the assistant principal. You are right -- it was Miss Gathman rather than Mrs. That was a typo on my part. I only rediscovered this message forum recently and have been reading it backwards (which I don't recommend). I got as far back as page 23 and still don't know what happen to Sue Watson and Jack Keefe. When I saw them at the 45th reunion they both looked great. Do you mind updating me on what happen to them. Other memories of grade school you might recall -- Miss Marshall always played the Blue Danube Waltz after lunch and we had to lay our heads on the desk. I sat in the back of the room and sometimes eat the fish food -- gross! Mrs. March was very upbeat and loved playing the piano as we came into the classroom in the morning and after lunch. Mrs. Spafford once tied Donald Brown to his chair. Miss Bottemley was a great teacher and a very lovely lady! On Friday afternoon we would divide up into 2 lines on either side of the room and have a "spell down" or move all the desks against the walls and square dance.

Steve,

Carnage is the exact word I use when describing Antietam. It remains the bloodiest day in American history... 23,000 casulties, all American.  We did it to ourselves!

Sue, from my understanding, Jack Keefe had a stroke.  Hope I get this right...........Sue Watson fell and hit her head knocking her out.  She laid in a comma for a period of time ending up with a Trakeotomy, but when they tried to remove the tube she would panic causing them to leave it in.  Sounds like we almost lost her at one point, however after a long stay in the hospital and recovery center, Judy McLean reports that she's finally home recovering.  I believe she's had and is still having therapy?  Judy, have I got all this right?  Jack had to relieve himself from class reunion duties due to his health.  We all continue to pray for both Sue and Jack's ongoing recoveries!  Hope this brings you up to speed and that I have everything correct.  Wouldn't want to miss inform anyone!

I remember having a bald headed man as our Bent School Principal.  I was always afraid of him and didn't ever want to get sent to the Principals Office as a young child. Yikes! Can't think of his name for the life of me.  Believe it or not, I was really shy in Elementary School.  You're right about Miss Bottemly, she was a great and fun teacher.  I always though Miss Gathman was grouchy!  Guess it was her long dark dresses and the bun she wore on the back of her head.  Mrs. March once sent a note home to my Mom wanting to know the kind of starch she put on my dresses because they always looked so nice.  It made me feel so proud!  Isn't it funny how the smallest things pleased us as small children!

Cheryl,

I can't believe you still have all you reports cards!  That's great!!!!  I know that I had the same teacher except I had Mrs. Olson for 5th grade and I know that for sure because she became a good friend of my mothers after we left Jefferson school.  I also remember because that was the year I got all A's on my report card after missing the first two weeks of school with the mumps.  I had said just a week before school started that I wasn't going to miss a day of school that year and I ended up missing the first two weeks.  I think you may have been in Mrs. Healy's split class.  I had her as Miss Ellis for 4th grade and then after she married Miss Healy's brother she taught a split class one year must have been 4th and 5th grade.  Miss Wells was third grade but got married when we were in 3rd grade and that's where I think Jack is getting Mrs. Bergen because I think that was her married name.

Helen,

Yes, Mr Wells did become the superintendant of schools but he was the principal at Jefferson when we were there I'm pretty sure.  Maybe Cheryl can confirm that from her report cards.  I may be wrong.  Yes, Sue is now at home and recovering, having therapy and getting stronger so keep her in your prayers.

Judy Tynan (Danielson)

Helen & Sue,

You are right about all the teachers. Miss Marshall used to tie a paper towel on Billy Dickerson's mouth every morning because he came into class talking!  Sue I remember the fish food too, maybe you made me eat it or was I just hungry?

Mrs Lesson was 4th grade and pregnant and in the summer of that year she took the class to see Lady & the Tramp at the Irvin Theater then to Walgreens for ice cream, we could have whatever we wanted and I got a banana split, the 1st and the last.  Hated it.

I loved Mrs March, she was such a wonderful teacher along with Miss Bottomley.  Now Miss Gasman as we called her was a different story, but we did sing alot in her class.

Oh the good ole days!!!!

Then there was Freddie Walker, Fred Livings, Doug Goodpaster, Steve Chestney and Then Carol McCauley (Swartz) came along in 4th grade and took all my boyfriend away.  To this day, I still remind her of that!  Ha.

Another example of the powerful Jefferson School team; presumably Cheryl Turner's birthday party.  BACK:  Gail Hempstead, Jane Ross ('65) and Judy McLean.  FRONT: Cheryl Turner and Alex Berner (Branom).

Max, I feel your pain about Lincoln.  It's as if the school didn't exist after Steve Jetton left.

I got to Jefferson in mid-April 1955, and only went there about 1 1/2 months.  It was the third grade, and it could very well be that Miss Wells turned into Mrs. Bergen.  If not, play along with me anyway to make me think I'm correct.  Thanks Judy.

Yes Judy, I have all my report cards from kindergarten through high school.  Anyway, in 1952, 53 & 54 the principal was Leilah Emerson.  In 1955, 56 & 58 W. Earl Lee was principal and George N. Wells was superintendent.  There is no mention of a superintendent on the earlier years' report cards.

William Anderson was the principal of Bent School

George N. Wells was the superintendent in 1949. He had that job for many years.

Julie,

I'm sure you're right about the (2) classes, but it just seemed like there were a lot of kids in the school.  I do remember the addition though.  I'm not sure about everyone else, but I went to Emerson for at least 1/2 of a year, maybe more, during that time.  I remember I really hated it.  I had to get up earlier to ride the bus, go down those stupid fire escapes, and set in those old falling apart desks.  Now I do remember Mrs. Warren in 2nd grade.  I remember my Mother saying there was 52 of us at one time, and she just didn't think any of us could learn anything with that many kids.  But, Mrs. Warren did a good job.  I did now you were living in Texas from Terry and Di Snow.  I saw your children when Bob brought them to Tony's wedding.  I know this may not be of any interest to you.  But I was absolutely amazed at how much Tony looked like Bob when he was younger.  Anyway, I hope this heat ends pretty quick.

Milan,

I see, from your article, Miss Okell was a pretty good Tennis player.  If you knew her or saw her, you would have a hard time wondering how she could hold a racquet, let alone play tennis.  She was a Sunday School teacher I had at one time.  The class also had Sharon Green, Larry Leipold, Tim Schmidt, and a few others I'll have to look up.  What a Hoot.

Judy, David Goodpasture was his name!  Sue Peterson was madly in love with him, right Sue?!?!  And yes Judy, Carol McCauley DID take everyone's boyfriends away from them.  She was quite a foxy lady!  Mr. Anderson is right. Thanks Milan for helping me out.  WOW, all these flash backs and we're not even taking drugs EXCEPT the meds the doctors have all of us on now!    Love the picture you just posted Jack!  You guys all look EXACTLY like you do now!

Once Judy Tynan heard about the bongo music at Jim's Steakhouse, she wanted nothing less for her birthday. Shortly after this happy picture, the trio was bitterly disappointed when they walked into dead silence.  You should have called Judy, you should have called.  8-26-11

But then, they might have become overly stressed by the blazing hand speed anyway.

Jack, I told you the bongos were sitting there waiting for your lightning fast hands!!

Cheryl...  I thought you let your hair grow out.  In that pic of Judy's birthday, it looks pretty short to me.  What's up with that?!

Jack... thanks for the sympathy about Lincoln School, but I'm wondering if Jetton messes up schools and then just leaves for another to do the same thing?  Seems he was at 3 schools before Jr. High.  Wonder if he left the second on all screwed up, also?  Actually I think things went much smoother after he left Lincoln.  The teachers seemed so much happier along with the students.

Steve... I didn't know that Danny Hale went to school in B'ton.  What grade did he go to Normal?
