Cheryl,

I never knew you went to Jefferson.  Did you ever know a custodian/janitor with the last name of Weber who worked there?

Steve Jetton

Ed, that was my first visit to Antietam.  I agree, it's an outstanding national park and memorial.  It is ironic that such a beautiful and tranquil landscape was the scene of such terrible carnage 149 years ago.

I went for ice cream rather than beer in Sharpsburg - at Nutter's, an old fashion place where the ice cream is fantastic and cheap, too.

Milan, you got forgot the rest of Judy's last name, it is Danielson.  I have no doubt that everyone knew who you were talking about.  Leave it to me to point that out!

Rod, I went to Jefferson the whole six years.  I lived not even a block away at 407 E. Monroe St.  I do have a kindergarten picture of the class somewhere and I will try to locate that and post it.  Diane Gardner, Alan Swartz, Tim Haney, Dick Ross and more I can't remember at the moment went there.  I do not remember a custodian by the name of Weber.  I don't remember the names of my teachers either.  My memories of Jefferson School are getting my fingers smashed in the doors at least once every couple of months, spraining my ankles more than once running down the stairs, and sitting on our front porch watching all the kids walking home from school on the other side of the street when I had polio and all their parents told them to "stay away" from me.  After school, my mother watched Jack Habich and his brother, Peter, until their parents were home from work.

Karen Kuhn and I took Judy out for lunch yesterday at Jim's for her birthday.  Unfortunately for us, there was no live entertainment going on then, but I did see an empty set of bongos waiting for someone!

Cheryl,

I went to Jefferson from Kindergarten to sixth grade too!!!  I'll forgive you for forgetting me this time. Ha Ha!  There was also Gail Hempstead, Patty Miller, Dick Gray and if I could find the pictures from back then I'd remember more than that.  I can remember some of the teachers names but not all.  There was Miss Healy (2nd) and Miss Ellis (3rd or 4th) and then Miss Ellis married Miss Healy's brother and we had Miss Healy and Mrs. Healy.  Mrs. Cooper was 6th grade and Mrs. Olson was 5th grade.  I'll have to think some more about the others.  We were just one class per grade, except for kindergarten which had morning and afternoon, until my younger brother got there three years after us and they had to add an extra class for each grade that year.  Boy does that seem like a long time ago...wait a minute that was a long time ago!!!!

Judy

I like the last two posts (Cheryl and Judy) because they're real.  I like people who keep it real.

Having said that, I didn't read anything about "Mrs. Bergen"...somebody help me out here...who was or were the 3rd grade teachers at Jefferson?  I remember  Ms. Spiers 4th grade, Mrs. Slingloff 5th, and Mrs. Tibbitts 6th very well (all Edwards), and I know somewhere along the line I had a Mrs. Bergen, but now I'm not positive that was the 3rd grade teacher at Jefferson.

Thanks Cheryl for correcting my last name, but that seems to be a common problem.

Loved my lunch with you and Karen and the wonderful gifst and shopping, I could go on and on but won't.

by the way, did anyone go to Bent School?  My father and I had the same 1st grade teacher and all my boys went there too.  The teacher had died since then!!!

Judy, please forgive me.  Now that you mentioned everyone else I failed to name, it is all coming back to me.  It was either you or Diane Gardner that has the same class picture of our kindergarten.  I promise I will dig it out.  I remember a Miss Segaser (sp).  She lived with Eileen Flinchpach (sp. again) across the street from me on Monroe.  The teachers you named vaguely sound familiar.  I have no idea who my teachers were at Washington School the year I went there.  Guess that tells you that very few teachers made a lasting impression on me or maybe my brain is just much now!  I mean were you supposed to go to school to learn?  I viewed it as a social activity!  ha ha ha

Didn't David Gaston also go to Jefferson?  I remember Gaston and Dick Gray as some of my original friends?

I went to Jefferson for one year, 6th grade.  And yes, Jack, Dave Gaston went there.  The 6th grade teacher, Mrs Cooper was a dinosauer from another era - even in 1958 (or whatever year it was).   Within the first few days of school she banished David out of the class room to the hall way for the entire year.  Even a naive eleven year old like myself could see a real problem with that picture.

Dave was the star of the basketball team and I can still picture him dribbling down court, popping bubbles with his gum, and firing up long range shots.

One Saturday morning Dave and I stopped off at the Hamilton Hotel to pick up Bill Henderson (I'm pretty sure he was long gone by high school) on the way to a game and witnessed Bill and his brother get into a serious knife fight.  No blood, fortuneately - but, like I say, it looked like serious business.

Just one year at Jefferson, I didn't get to know a lot of the kids very well.

Went to Emerson for 5 years and Lincoln for Kindergarten.  There is still an "Emerson mafia" that stays pretty active in class activities.  Suzie Denton, Pat H Lehr, Terri G, Susan Ford, etc.  Actually, I thought Vic Jackson went there for a year or two but, per his note the other day, I guess not.  That's a 65 year old memory for you.

All my old grade schools were closed, I believe, by the 70s.

Let's see if I can get this right.  Judy Danielson, please correct me where I'm wrong..............we grew up only blocks from one another and have known each other all of our lives.  Bent School Kindergarten teacher, can't remember her name, 1st Grade, Miss Marshall, 2nd Grade, Mrs. March, 3rd Grade Mrs. Spafford or was that 4th Grade which may have been Mrs. Lesson, 5th Grade Miss Gathman (we sang DAILY, Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory), 6th Grade Miss Bottomly. She was tall and in charge of Patrolls and I liked her. Louis Sonja (SP) was Patroll Captain.  Anyway, that's the memory of a 65 year old.  Judy, I'm certain you will need to correct me where I help is needed since we went all the way through grade school together.

rod - you said there were 2 classes through all of oakland.  actually, there was only one through 2nd grade (remember mrs. warren - she had like 50 kids in her class - she used to put me in the hall with scotchtape over my mouth)  the school grew so fast that they split us up in 3rd and 4th while building the addition.  in third half the class went to jefferson (i think it was jefferson - it was downtown and smelled like beer nuts) and then in fourth the other half went.  then starting when we were in 5th we had 2 of each class.  i'll dig out a bunch of old pics when i get a chance.  i live in longview tx so am also enjoying the heat      holly - i wish you'd marked me out before posting that awful 6th grade picture!  i'll have to find a bad one of you to post

enjoyed the mini reunion as usual - when i got back to my mom's i remembered i had my camera in my pocket - a little of that age related attention deficit disorder.

Julie....Having the good fortune of having a last name that started in Ha, I had the pleasure of having you in homeroom for most, if not all of HS.  On reflection, the scotchtape might not have been all that bad an idea.  Verbalization was never your weakness. :-)

And here we have First Grade at Jefferson.  In front, fourth from the left is Jack Walker, next to him maybe Gene Zoll and second from the right is  Dick Ross.  Second Row is Marie Hill and Alan Swartz. In back, standing is Diane Gardner, unknown, Patty Locker,  Pat Edwards, Gail Hemstead, Janet Alikonis, Cheryl Turner, Judy McLean, Chloe Dell Michaels and Tim Haney.  Those who went there can hopefully fill in the rest.

Helen,

Miss Hoehenstein was our Kindergarten teacher. Mrs. Lesson was pregnant during 4th grade and didn't finish the year with us, but she did bring her baby in to show the class. In 5th grade I always picked Battle Hymn of the Republic to sing -- sorry :) -- I always raised my hand in a hurry to pick that song. I still love it. Mrs. Gathman was also my piano teacher. Nice job remembering our teachers! My kids are always amazed that I remember all my grade school teachers and the names of all my classmates. Those days were so much simpler in so many ways compared to when our children went through grade school. Fond memories of Bent School Days -- I'm sure for you and Judy as well.

Judith (Judy) McLean (Wilder)

Jack,

I think that picture was First Grade.  I remember my grandmother making me that skirt for our "Old McDonald Had a Farm" skit.  The girl two over from Diane Gardner was Patty Locker and they moved away before high school and the girl between me and Tim Haney was Chloe Dell Michaels and she moved away also.  Patty Locker lived on Front Street two doors from my grandparents house (ended up being the house I grew up in after 2nd grade) and Chloe Dell lived on McLean Street about two house south of Wesley Methodist Church.

I think Mrs. Bergen may have been 3rd grade but I'm not sure.  Mr Wells the principal had a daughter who was a teacher at Jefferson and she got married right after school started and I'm thinking that her married name was Mrs. Bergen.  But then again I could be totally wrong on the name.

Steve,

Miss Cooper was our 6th grade teacher (we were 11) I remember it well because that's the year my father died.

Cheryl,

You are right there was a Miss Sagazer and I think Miss Boholtz was my Kindergarten teacher.  Was Miss Sagazer the first grade teacher?  I sure miss my mom when it comes to these things as she always remembered the teacher because my older brother and I always had the same ones.  My younger brother always ended up with the new ones when they started having two classes for each grade.

Judy, like magic, Kindergarten became First Grade.  Could that be Gene Zoll in the white shirt next to Jack Walker (if that's even Jack Walker?)

I now remember the name Mr. Wells as Principal.

What's with the scarves on all the guys, a Jefferson fashion statement?

08/28/11 05:14 PM #1754

Judith (Judy) McLean (Wilder)

Jack,

Yes, that is Jack Walker and the girl behind him is Marie Hill (I think that was her name) next to her is Alan Swartz.  I'm thinking Dick Gray was in that class too but don't know which one he is in the picture.  Gary Schad went to Jefferson but don't remember if he was in first grade there or not.  There's only one girl I can't name but I'm having a little problem with some of the boys...never thought that would happen!  Ha Ha!!

08/28/11 05:14 PM #1755

Terry (Max) Maxwell

Jack... I believe that Judy was telling you that was their "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" skit, so I'm thinking that wasn't just a fashion statement at their school every day, but I could be wrong.

I'm also thinking that nobody from Lincoln School reads this site.  Everybody is talking about all of the other schools in town except Lincoln.  Excuse me, Steve Jetton went there in Kindergarten as mentioned earlier. (but he didn't have anything nice to say about it though... maybe that's why he left?!)

E YI E YI OH,  Max
