Last Friday night I had one of the best times I ever had in the Twin Cities. After some unpleasant business down there, I went to Jim’s Steakhouse for a blue cheese burger. A very talented piano player/singer was the same as the one there after our 2009 reunion. In her briefcase, she still had the Class of ’64 reunion button we gave her then.
With her was her friend on the tambourine, a guitar player, and a very amateurish customer playing the professional 4 bongo set. I couldn’t stand it anymore so I took over the bongos. I had enjoyed playing percussion at parties over the years, but never with professional musicians.
What happened was magical. We were in sync, we were tight, and we energized each other. The customers noticed and drifted up to the piano bar. I was on a high for about 1 ½ hours. The piano player kept extending her playing time, saying that this was one of the best nights she’s ever had at Jim’s.
Fun is often impromptu.
