Mike,

It depends on the snake :)... some crawl, others walk!

seriously, in the woods, I carry a .38 with the first round a shotshell, followed by 5 slugs. The shotshell works wonders on snakes.

Most of my shooting however is done with a .45 ACP 1911 type pistol. I also shoot .45 Long Colt, .44 spl and .44 magnum as well as .44 cap n ball black powder civil war era reproduction (1858 Remington )

Jack,

I am sure you would agree that Amy is mean enought that a firearm isn't necessary :)

However, I usually have one in the car somewhere..

Amy can kill you with sarcasm.  She does not need a gun.

Thank you for the up date on Alan Haggard.  He lived next door to me on Felton Place for many years.  I didn't know he was sick.

We are still in Calif. so I depend alot on this site to find out alot of the news.

I hear the weather in Bloomington sucks right now.  It's been pretty nice here the past week.

I don't think Alan knew until it was too late. This is what I got from his son:

"unfortunately he had an advanced stage aggressive liver cancer that took his life within weeks of entering the hospital."

And the weather in the Twin Cities does suck. :)

ED, where are you taking classes? My sister took the conceal carry class at Darnall's. They winter in Alabama and she can legally carry there. now. It is something I have wanted to do.  Right now my only experience besides target practice (and I haven't done that in a while) is shooting at groundhogs that like to eat out of our  garden in the summer.

Ed, I have the pleasure of a CZ97B in .45, a 686 , a 586, a Walther PP, a Ruger Mark II, a high standard sentinel 22-22mag and some long guns. I am looking forward to getting through physical therapy and getting on the range. Always use a Mountain Pistol black powder.54 for the 4th of July firing paper wads. Young and old love it at our get-togethers.

There is a temporary problem with the "In Memory" section with Class Creators. We haven't made any changes on our end but for some reason, no comments show up for now.

Mike,

It would seem that we have some similiar interests. I am familiar with the S&W 686, but have never fired one, or the cz either for that matter, altho I did look it up and it appears to be a beautiful piece. Walther is a classic and a cool gun. I have a Mark II as well. Have had it more than 30 years and it has literally thousands and thousands of rounds thru it without a hitch. I raised 3 boys on that pistol.

My .45 is a Thompson Auto Ordnance that has been extensively reworked. I have had it for close to 30 years and we sort of understand each other. Can't tell you how many thousands are thru that thing...on my second barrel.. I tend to gravitate towards the Rugers for my whellguns having both a Vacquero in .45LC and a Blackhawk bisley in .44 mag. My .38 is an old S&W model 10 that my dad carried thru Korea and Viet Nam...mine now.

I love to shoot black powder but I HATE the cleanup..

I had to have right rotator cuff surgery a few years back and since then, mounting a long gun just feels wierd and ungainly. As a result I have not shot a long gun since the surgery.

I also reload for all my centerfire pistols and rifles.

When you are recovered, we will have to get together and launch some bullets!

Milan,

that is just how close Malinda was when she was diagnosed with Liver cancer. The dr said that without treatment her life expectancy was " a few weeks, maybe a month or so" and here she is still with us and doing well.

You two are a lucky couple, Ed.

FYI - shot shells are available for .45 long Colt online or a well supplied gun shop.  The .44 Remington is a good old pistol but I'm still a fan of the 1860 open top Colt.

A blast from the past. Smith's Cities Service at 601 W. Locust.

Wow Cheryl, I did not know this about you. Didn’t know you were Annie Oakley. In Chicago, I’ve been known to be in areas where others fear to tread, and have occasionally associated with characters that scare people. At this late stage, though, I’m just learning that I have to be more careful when I visit the Twin Cities. :)

Yea Cheryl, I discovered that recently as well. they are also available for the .45ACP, but I am not sure I would trust a shotshell to feed in an autoloader.. they can get a little funky.

I may look into those for the long colt as I love to carry and shoot it...  big 'ol cowboy gun!

Open Top Colt... you mean the 1860  Army? I prefer the 1858 Remington for BP shooting. I think it is one of the most beautiful graceful handguns ever produced. ... and it is stronge than the colt...and... you can load and cap all 6 chambners and rest the hammer in the locks between the cylinders making it safe..

My weapon of choice and you can get ammo at Wally's.  :)

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Ed, guns might turn you and the others on and Milan might prefer the pea shooter, but my old favorite was the slingshot. Now I have changed my mind since seeing a vintage movie where the butler says to a gangster, "Frankly Sir, if I were to choose weapons in a duel with you, I would choose grammar." I admit it might not be very effective against a copperhead in the middle of Alabama, but it sure comes in handy in Chicago.

04/20/11 06:30 AM #906

Milan Jackson

Mom wouldn't let me have a sling shot. "You can put someone's eye out with one of those things." (laugh)

Shortly after 9/11, the gummint prohibited firearms in the vacinity of the dams on the Tennessee river. I fished with a guide who necessarily had to go to the face of the dam.. he has a slingshot and ball bearings for protection of himself and his clients..

Milan, what did your Mom say about BB guns? Except for a 10 gauge over 22 hunting rifle which I used for squirrel hunting on my uncle's farm in Heyworth, the only gun I ever owned was a set of Lone Ranger double holster cap guns which I wore backwards so I could lift the trigger guard with my index finger and spin the handle into my hand. Got pretty good at it.

Anybody remember when Sheriff Sid was on a promo tour for Kelly's Potato Chips at Krogers on Oakland Ave.? Probably around 1956ish. All the neighborhood kids went to see him and I challenged him to a quick draw right in the middle of the snack aisle. Thrilled because I outdrew him, I've always wondered if he let me win out of sympathy. Nevertheless, the memory is indelible.

Ah, Mel the pistolero! It sounds from your description like you had a drilling, and if so, it was / is quite valuable.

I was not allowed to have a bb gun either. So, I used those of my friends... same result. Mother was totally unconcerned about my shooting the real ones or even owning them ( got my first one when I was about 12).  It lived in a gunrack on my bedroom wall. Ammo for it lived in a drawer built into the gunrack... everyone in the household survived!

Nuff 'bout guns.. who is doin something cool this spring?
