Ann:

Too noisy?   If I lived there I would invite them to my house and cook a meal for it too!   Maybe you could get a group together to do that!   It would give the committee another choice.

Good luck and wish I lived there!

Linda

Whew.  Been awhile since I've checked in.  In fact, after a bunch of tries had to give up and request a new password.

Skimmed through recent entries & got a kick out the conversation about us starting off the boomer generation after the war.  Never knew it, but my dad worked at Eureka Williams along with Joan's.  Makes sense, those two were best buddies back in the day.  I think the timing in my case was a little different.  My mama always said she waited until her mother in law died before having kids & from stories I've heard about dear old grandma Grace, I believe it's true.  She died in 1945 and well, I came along 64 years ago yesterday.

Sixty four, you say?  Was I a precocious child as a member of the acclaimed class of '64?  I will explain - back in my ancient days writing code for main frame computers, the Big Iron they kept on elevated floors in the climate controlled rooms, we thought in a base 16 (hexadecimal) numbering system.  That sort of corrupted me and it's the only way I can count now.  That's why I am so much younger than the rest of you.

Or more full of s***.  Depends on your point of view.

Regarding Destihl's, I must dissent with the opine of my old beer drinking pal Michael & a few others.  I used to really like their beer & have a growler sitting on the counter that I used to take in to get refilled.  Don't drink the stuff anymore because I can't have gluten but sure loved a thick, frothy stout.  Anyhow, I like the restaurant and would be happy to try the new place.

Final thought.  Maybe a road trip to SW Texas for Linda's cooking should be scheduled for a mini reunion.

Steve, it's great to see your "younger than everyone else" face on here again. I also like DeStihl's brews, but the prices and atmosphere might be a bit too much for some of the "older than dirt" Raiders. Aren't you on the Reunion Planning Committee? Maybe you could introduce your idea to them...ROAD TRIP!!!

Next year, we could:

Be with Boo...May in the Carolina's

Do Dave's...August BBQ in Iowa.

Lunch with Linda...say maybe Texas in January instead of December. Nice.

I'd go anywhere with you guys. Yeah, even Max!!!

Thanks Mel.  I just figured I’d have to stay at home.

Oh no Max. You don't get off that easy. Wherever we go, you go. Got it?

Steve - I must have been coding a little ahead of you.  Back then we coded in binary which would make my age =1001000 which then converted to Hex = 48!

When talking about the older than dirt Raiders, Steve and I must be excluded (or we could recalculate everyone's age in binary / hex.)  However, we will have to get a calculator because I'm not up to that much long division ([decimal divideded by 2] [take the integer and continue the process until the value is 0] then you end up with the hex decimal.  It's actually easier on paper than to explain it.

RE: Road Trip for BBQ - you'll have to detour a couple hundred miles south to Kansas City for great BBQ, see below:

Arthur Bryant's BBQ - Arthur Bryant, the legendary King of Ribs, is the most renowned "barbequer" in history. He created a sauce that has attracted the likes of former Presidents Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama to his restaurant.

Jack Stack BBQ ; Q39 BBQ; Zarda's BBQ; Gates BBQ; but for the restaurant voted Most Manly BBQ in the United States = Joe's Kansas City with the Z-Man Sandwich!!! Come on Down!

WAIT - We can't leave Max out of the road trip agenda.  How about to Mader's or Kagel's for German Food in Milwaukee?  There's sure to be more, but those are the only 2 I can remember from my travels when working at St. Mary's Hospital.

David, you're right.  I knew I'd messed up right after I'd posted.  Just the day before I was down in Louisville celebrating my bd and my Irish daughter's, born on the 17th.  I remembered telling her that I was 48.  I must have been thinking about our illustrious class when I said 64.

Figured I'd just wait and see if we had any old time programmers who would catch me.

I don't know if anybody nowadays still knows or cares about "hex."  I got demoted into management a long time ago and sure as heck am not a techincal whiz now.

Charlie had to explain his March 16 post regarding my forum picture. He was convinced my forum pic was with Mel (refering to the elephant). It could be that the elephant is Mel's equivalent in the elephant world. This elephant was a natural born artist that painted for a living. The paintings in the below photo were painted by the elephant using a large paint brush held in his trunk. Charlie must think artists all look alike.

Don’t know how you confuse the two... the elephant is so much better looking than Mel!

Beautiful Work, Nancy!  Will miss you by a week or so.  Heading up to see the grandkids and of course their parents, our favorite youngest daughter, our favorite son-in-law,  and our favorite oldest daughter on the 14th.  Will be passing through Bloomington, by that I mean around, on the 13th.

Have to be in Chicago by Saturday for babysitting duty, or as we call it - a day out at the playground, COSTCO for ice cream for lunch, then more play, then Baskin Robins for a late afternoon snack, then home to mom and dad who can't understand how Oscar can have so much energy and not be hungry for supper after being out playing all day.

Hope you have a wonderful show, Nancy!  All the best.

I would love to attend if I just lived closer!  It looks gorgeous!  How can I see more?

Thanks for letting us know.

Nancy, I have a great-niece who paints the religious paintings like you.  Her name is Jen Page and you both do beautiful work.

Michael (Mike) Franks

March 22, 2018. Finally got a decent day here in B/N. Temp is almost 50. Wind is under 10 MPH. Sunshine! Of course it isn't going to last. Rain/snow, Saturday. Why do people live here? Corn, beans, insurance, and lots of taxes. Great potholes too! Pumped up the tires on the old Fuji and pretended that I was young again. Why do people live here? I know that when we get into June, we can expect 90 degree temps and 90% humidity. We'll close the house and crank the A/C, wishing it would cool off. Why do people live here? We'll pray for rain, fight the Japenese beetles and spray weeds. Property taxes will need paid, so we can continue the cycle!

Is that why we live here?  Marv and Mel: Chime in here and explain this to me. Others are more than welcome.

Mike:

You might live there because you relate to home as THERE!  You know where all of your favorite places are, what they have to offer, and who will be there.  Your doctors, dentists, insurance people, and old friends with whom you grew up are there,   Also, if you plant gardens you're insured that things pretty well grow.  You get an average of about 36 inches of rain a year.  You don't realize how lucky you are to have water!

You will have your favorite grocery, gas station, bakery, and restaurants too.  You have 2 colleges to root for when they have games.  Perhaps you don't have 1 out of 4 kids who go hungry every day, while, the US sends money to other countries.

Every place has inconveniences and yet enjoyment of the area.  The pros and cons!  What do you want your life, at this time, to be like?  Only you can answer that!  But, NO place is perfect.

Linda

Our annual rain is three to four inches a year here in the high desert and nothing grows except "cheet-grass".

Dianne Shaffer, Boo Baxter, Diane Gardner, etc.......I want to draw your attention to Ron Shillington's participation to our class website!  We grew up with him, yet he has not attended a reunion.  I would like to see that changed.  Please contact him.

Love ya all, Linda

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Mike, since you asked, let me add a little something to what Linda said. Chicago averages about 5 degrees colder on any given day than Bloomington, but I didn't choose to live here for the weather, rather for the art climate. I've thrived in this cultural environment for over 50 years and have absolutely no regrets. I've seen record setting highs, lows, rains and snows. In that time it has been my good fortune to travel to many foreign places, yet I'm always glad to get back home.

It might sound a little fatalistic, but I've always liked this adage, “We always manage to bring ourselves the place we're meant to be.” Of course we have a choice in where that is. So, in my world, I celebrate being with my family and friends, the art community and regard my home to be where my heart is. So far, so good. Unlike Ray and Linda, water is not an issue.

Back to Charlie, Max and Marv on the subject of elephant artists: We pachyderms have very thick skin and long memories. Besides, who ever “herd” of a left-handed elephant?

Guys,  Here’s one of the best reasons to live in Chicagohttp://www.dailyherald.com/entlife/20180323/have-you-seen-the-awesome-sister-jean-music-video

Terry (Max) Maxwell

That’s great!  I’ve seen a couple interviews with her at their last two games.  Go Ramblers!  My pool is toast so I’m pulling for Loyola as a dark horse.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Gosh dang it, Max. Do you have to give away all my secrets?

Dave and Max, Sister Jean is awesome. Yes, her bracket was busted, but I'm hoping for Loyola to make the Final Four. Bruce Weber and Bill Self left Illinois for Kansas State and Kansas. I'm hoping they both get their behinds kicked and we'll see Loyola or Michigan play Villanova for the championship.

What do you think Suzi?
