I checked weather history to see if anything was keeping our parents indoors in 1945, but the weather in March through the summer looked pretty good.  Of course there wasn't TV and the old radio shows were usually over pretty early and you could only play so much canasta, so they had to find something else to fill their time with.  Just like the blackout in NYC 20 or so years ago - the birth rate spiked then as well.  That's it for History afternoon from Kansas.

OMG Dave, you almost nailed it, except for two things. One, my dad was still in the Army Air Corps and got a leave to come home in Nov., which might be why Marv and I were born in Aug. The other thing is that their game was pinocle. LOL

This topic is really becoming interesting. Every morning, I drink coffee with other guy friends and there is no situation that we don’t have an answer for. I might bring this parent thing up. Perhaps it’s as simple as “Boy meets girl. Love springs eternal. Children become a product of that union”. Does anyone have Frasier’s  phone number?

My Dad worked at Eureka Williams, which I think was used for the war effort during those years. (I'm sure an historian amongst us would know.) He didn't go overseas - not sure if it was his bad eyesight or provider for his parents. Anyway, twin John and I were born 12/27/45, four days short of being baby boomers. Fun fact: boomers were born between 1946 and 1964.

Hi All,

I just received the card in the mail about our mini-reunions and have a suggestion for a new place to have one that I think everyone would enjoy.  Destihl Brewery (not the restaurant) just north of Menards.  Be a great place in the summer as they have a lot of outdoor seating overlooking a small lake/pond.  They have expanded their menu and have a lot of great beer to choose from.  Karen and I have been them several times and really like it.

It may be a place to go instead of Gill Street in the summer.  Someplace new is always fun and they could accommodate our group easily.  Let me know what y'all think.

Rich, with all due respect to one of the coolest guys to ever grace the halls of BHS and one of the greatest basketball players ever............that beer is TERRIBLE! Frat guys won't even drink it!    I've been known to tip a brew or three over the years, with my pal Jetton. That does NOT make me an expert, but forgive me If I don't agree. I haven't tried the food. I'm sure it's fine. Other than that, Destihl IS a pleasing atmosphere.

I have to agree with Mike Rich, I have never had a good beer (that they brew) that tasted good.  But, I guess I can try again.

Happy Saint Pat's to all of you guys

Linda Bristow (Elias) -

Thank you for the kind words! My childhood memories are precious. I may have idealized them over the years, but I'll always remember things like playing in the neighborhood until dark, or getting a two-stick cherry popsicle from Chuck's grocery. :-)

Mel and I are sooo lucky as twins to have shared mostly the same experiences together as kids. It is rare that we are together that we do not reflect on our memories of those experiences. Our memories are not always in tune but without question we savor those times. Joan's recent posts make me realize how all of us share many of those great memories. Remember penny candy such as rolled up strips of liquorice with a red bead in the center to look like a record, sugar water filled wax bottles, dots on paper, peanut butter logs and wax lips? How about games such as Careers, Battleship, Cooties or Jax? Those Valentines Day Boxes and cards were great fun.

Another thought that comes to mind is the memory of very elderly people we knew that have been long gone and how different our lives have been in contrast. One of our great-aunt's that we visited in Arkansas lived in an old settler type house with no running water, still cooked on a cast iron wood fired stove and never had a telephone. They had an outside well and we would drink water from a bucket using a long handled porcelain dipper. We are now becoming those elderly people that have lived very different lives from kids today. Some of us still do not use a computer or have a cell phone. Todays kids cannot imagine that. Older people have a great opportunity to share their special memories and "hard life" stories with kids of today, to plant those kind of seeds in their minds giving them such special memories to harvest in their old age.

Come to think of it, this forum gives us the opportunity do the same with each other here and now! Isn't it fun? Congratulations to all of you that are computer literate enough to be able to log in to this forum.

Rich's thought regarding Destihl is a nice idea and speaking as one the 14 Class Planning Committee members the suggestion is greatly appreciated. Input regarding class activity planning is very welcome and encouraged. The 2018 mini-reunion schedule is firm since we now have reservations and notices have been mailed. The committee considers all proposed ideas and makes decisions as a group. Destihl can certainly be considered for future events but since 2019 is our 5 year reunion, it is doubtful that we will have a summer mini-reunion in 2019. The committee has begun discussion regarding the 2019 reunion and a questionaire will be posted soon to help in planning the celebration. Hope everyone is looking forward to it.

Joan,

The Eureka Co. [Williams Oil-O-Matic] had Government contacts since Williams bought the company from the Brickyard to manufacture the Oil-Burner before World War II.  Continued through Korea and Vietam and even did Ordinance work during Vietam and when those contacts ended it was the begining of the end for Eureka.  Even with Electrox of Sweden buying them out they couldn't make it without the Government contacts.

Darn! We will miss May Reunion by 2 weeks. Will be coming up for graduations. Probably will stop in Bloomington sometime on that trip. Will let y’all know in case some could meet for dinner or a drink.

Ray, thank you for the detail on Eureka Williams. In my youth, it never occured to me to actually ask Dad what he did at work, and of course the opportunity is long-gone now. I'm sorry to hear the company eventually dissolved. The good news is I'm still using a Eurkea upright vacuum cleaner that I've had for decades. :-)

This is our home at 1302 N. Lee.  The White House next door is where Carol McCauley lived with her family.  Notice the hopscotch on the sidewalk.  Marv, thanks for sharing childhood memories - great idea.  Joan, I still use my old Eureka upright vacuum too,

I’m here at Promt Care waiting to see someone about my horrible cold.  My chest is hurting so bad.  I hope the doctor gives me something.

Joan,

Not to miss-lead you, when Electrolux purchased Eureka they moved the plant to El Paso, Texas and offered alot of the folks with core positions to relocate and I guess some did.  I think Electrolux USA is now in Charlotte, North Carolina and still produces the Eureka brand.  During World War II my understanding, the plant was mainly a steel machine shop.  Workers ran drill presses, turning centers, milling etc.  After the war the company aquired Emerson Electric and they aquired the Eureka company.  I could probably just Google it and quit guessing.  And yes, we also have our forty year old Eureka Up-Right.

It is unfortunate that The Chateau was chosen again for the December get together. Many people

complained that the noise level was unbearable and made sure to mention it to Marvin.
