Mel, thanks for posting that pic of Billy.  When making the In Honor plaques for the Memorial I could only find one picture of him and got that off the Wall of Faces website, a very blurry Military pic. I'm going to use this one next year. Yes, I did watch the PBS series.  I have a set of 5 dvds from a very similar show the history channel did  about 10 years ago.  This one is, so far, more informative.

I thought about whether or not I should post on the subject of Viet Nam. I want to answer Joan's post concerning her brother, John. It was impossible to relate our experiences with anyone, especially family. There were events and ugly experiences that I still will never share, though it's been over 50 years ago. Even other Viet Nam veterans rarely reminisce. I can tell you that everything that you may have read, watched, or heard is probably true.

The tour was 12 months. Everyday I dreamed of coming home, back to "the world". When I returned, everything had changed. I felt like an alien from another planet that had been in a time warp. I enrolled at ISU, and needless to say younger students didn't want to hear about the war. I knew that I desperately needed counseling, but that was a sign of weakness in those days.

I'll end by saying that it has taken a very long time to put that part of my life behind me. It was a curse that our generation had to endure, whether you served, or prayed for those that did. There was no glory. Pray for our men and women that serve our country today.

Mike and all,

My nephew was in the Marines and served 2 tours.  He is 2 years younger than me.  He has tried to commit suicide several times when he was younger.  He kept seeing a 4 or 5 year girl that had to be shot because she had a bomb attached to her.  After age 45 he started coming out of it.

The children got to him the most.

Ken Burnes chose to do his series to fill in the blanks for Americans who only saw what was reported in the news.  It is also for those vets who might want to see the war through someone else's eyes.  His hope is that it will be cathartic for vets.

I doubt that anyone will ever be as factual as Ken Burns.

In hope that someone, anyone, might get a better perspective of Vietnam and find help from this series, I wish all of you Vets...........Much love, health, and happiness.

Linda

Mike, thanks for sharing so eloquently about an experience that can't really be put into words.

We as American citizens can only imagine the pain and suffering these soldiers and nurses went through.  I think all our classmates that served in the service deserves a big thank you.  My xhusband Ronnie Ratcliffe and I went to Bill's visitation and that was so hard to see.  I think it affected Ronnie also because he was a marine.

I hope PBS shows it again.

Well said, Michael!

I had lunch with one of the corpsmen from Mike Company 3/3/3 (a Medal of Honor Recipient) last week when we were both volunteering at the Heart of America Patriot Foundation Golf Fundraiser.  We comiserated on our experiences, as were both in the same place at the same time when he threw himself on a grenade to save 4 other Marines.  Fortunately for Doc, the grenade didn't explode and he was able to come home mostly unscathed, as did I.  Here is his citation:

BALLARD, DONALD E.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life and beyond the call of duty while serving as a HC2c. with Company M, in connection with operations against enemy aggressor forces. During the afternoon hours, Company M was moving to join the remainder of the 3d Battalion in Quang Tri Province. After treating and evacuating 2 heat casualties, HC2c. Ballard was returning to his platoon from the evacuation landing zone when the company was ambushed by a North Vietnamese Army unit employing automatic weapons and mortars, and sustained numerous casualties. Observing a wounded marine, HC2c. Ballard unhesitatingly moved across the fire swept terrain to the injured man and swiftly rendered medical assistance to his comrade. HC2c. Ballard then directed 4 marines to carry the casualty to a position of relative safety. As the 4 men prepared to move the wounded marine, an enemy soldier suddenly left his concealed position and, after hurling a hand grenade which landed near the casualty, commenced firing upon the small group of men. Instantly shouting a warning to the marines, HC2c. Ballard fearlessly threw himself upon the lethal explosive device to protect his comrades from the deadly blast. When the grenade failed to detonate, he calmly arose from his dangerous position and resolutely continued his determined efforts in treating other marine casualties. HC2c. Ballard's heroic actions and selfless concern for the welfare of his companions served to inspire all who observed him and prevented possible injury or death to his fellow marines. His courage, daring initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

October is upon us shortly and Halloween will be a reason to buy candy!

My grandchildren from one child chooses to buy their costumes.

My grandchildren from my other child chooses to make their own costumes.  Out of popsicle sticks, my artistic grandson has made some cool things.  Then he learned to place garments together out of leather.  He carved masks out of all kinds of junk.

His sister makes her costumes too and remarkable designs.  She took a class in sewing and taught her brother.  He took a class in metal working with an anvil and he taught her.  I am mezmerized by what they come up with.

They had made some swords from GAME of Thrones.  People wanted to buy them.

When I get a photo of their Halloween costumes I am always in awe of their accomplishments.

So, October has become a time for me to get ready to expect new things from their creations!

Have a wonderful October everyone!

Linda

Wow! Other than birthday wishes, which are great, there have been no posts in two weeks. I am about to change that. Are you a music lover? I listen to music a lot and my son recently turned me on to an app called Spotify. Having an iPhone, I am finding that Spotify is a fantastic way to have your favorite music with you any where, anytime. It takes some computer time up front, but once you have your personal play lists set up it is nothing but pure listening pleasure.

My musical taste has a wide range and it is hard to identify my favorites but I have lots that are high on the list. What I listen to most is classical, opera,1930's to 1970's vocalists and soundtracks (movies and plays). My collection of select pieces at this point is an astounding 2,351 tracts. It might be fun to share lists of favorites with you other music lovers. What are your favorite categories? With very little encoragement I could start posting lists some of my highest level favorites for you to sample on YouTube. It is possible to share music on Spotify. While I have not yet attempted that maybe we could try it.

Are there any other BHS Class of '64 music lovers out there? Ain't retirement great for providing time for these little pleasures?

Do you all have the Corn Maizes up ther,e with entertainment for kids?  This time of year just amazes me.  People (all ages) just love them.  Yet, we have rattlesnakes here!

I'm not going.
