Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Judy - First let me say I am so glad you and the Lehr's are OK.  It was so thoughtful of you to let me know about Brad and Rita.  I have not been able to get through to them as yet.  I also have five other cousins living in Washington, and from what I understand, they were also spared any bad damage.  It was very very close to them, but thank God they are all OK.  I myself have been in two tornadoes, (not at my home).  It's over so quickly, but, the site when it is over is just overwhelming for anyone.  You have this empty feeling and your mind takes a few minutes to calibrate what you see.  Hopefully, the pain will subside and the rebuilding will not last too long.

Suzi, How bout those Bears.  Maybe Cutler needs to stay down for a couple more weeks.  Truth be know, he could leave as far as I'm concerned.

Rod,  maybe someone can step on his big toe and he could be out for the rest of the season!!!  I know in my dreams.  He's just such a pain in the butt!

On a different note,  we tried to call the hot line tonight for the victims over in Washington and haven't got through.  So glad Judy and Whitey and Patti and Kenny are all ok.  My stepsons in laws lost their home and they were trapped for about a half hour in their basement.  A lot of the kids in central Illinois are doing so much for Washington.  For the people who live out town go on the pantagraph site.  You'll be as proud as I am of these young people.

Washington High School plays Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin in the quarterfinals of their football division on Saturday in Springfield.

The Springfield coaches and school administrators  have raised the money to :

1. Provide busses for the Washington team

2. Provide busses for the cheerleaders, etc

3. Provide busses for fans

In addition, the football team will recieve two meals ( the team has a tradition of eating a PB&J sandwich before games)... fixins will be there for them

The team and all the cheerleaders as well as the fans will be the guests of the Springfield school for a meal after the game and before leaving for home.. My understanding is the meal will be memorable as a large number of Springfield resturants are gettin in on the act.

This is one classy school and team!

Other high schools in the area are holding fundraisers as well, but this one is special to both teams

Ed, my post also included Springfield.  All these schools have shown so much class, it's all about helping another who is hurting.  God is good!

So many amazing stories about Washington. For those who aren't in the area, you might like to see this article from this morning's Chicago Tribune. Ed's description of the help from Springfield makes my heart race with joy for how communties support each other in times of need. This is truly inspiring. No matter the results of tomorrow's game, these people are all winners. Still, I'll be rooting for the Washington Panthers, Patty, Ken, Judy and Whitey.

He is a sophomore and usually plays in the 4 th quarter, but he has played in every game this seasnon getting experience and conficence. If they win on Friday, it will be a 4 peat!

GO ROCHESTER ROCKETS

(ya think I might be proud?)

Tonites game was at 25 degrees with a 15 mph wind.... when I played HS ball it was in Houston and the temps got down to a chilly 70 or so...

Ed,

How exciting!  I will be sure to watch the game on TV!   Our son Joel was a senior on the 1990 team when Seneca became the 2A state champions.  It was a magical year for us as, I'm sure, this year has been for Brennan and you!  Wishing  the Rochester Rockets the best of luck!  I will be cheering them on!

Friday evening, the Rochester Rockets went into the record books for IHSA football.

They won!

Now the only public school in Illinois with 4 consecutive state championships

Ed, what's up with The Tide? Alabama, is NEVER supposed to be beaten by Auburn!

Coaches have been hung for less. Get out the tar and feathers.

First, let me also give Congrats to you Ed and your Grandson for the BIG WIN.  What a rush for you.  I'm sure your wife was looking down with great pride.

Suzi, hopefully Dave is doing well and back home.

Now Ed and Suzi, you will feel some of my pain during the last unhappy two weeks I've had.  I was in B/N the weekend before Thanksgiving for a wedding.  I had it all planned.  Go to the wedding.  See friends and relatives.  Make a trip to  Washington to give some comfort to my cousins, and hopefully see some "64" HS Grads.  The plan crumbled and just got worse as the weekend progressed.  The receptioin was to be at BCC.  Well, as you likely know, the fire at BCC changed everything.  The Brides Mother, (who is like my Wife's little sister and best friend), called upon us to help.  My Wife would do anything for her, and she, we did.  Our tasks became many and often.  Even though we had a super great time, we were sort of attached to every time frame of the wedding weekend.  Here is where you, Ed & Suzi come in.  At the reception there were not one, but two Auburn grads.  During our talks, in fun, I let them know how bad Alabama would kick Auburn's ass.  So much for than conversation.  Now Suzi, on Sunday, you know,(Bears vs. Rams), there was this huge Brunch at the Brides parents home.  Guess where a WHOLE bunch of the guests were from.  That's right, St. Louis.  It was quite a boistrous 3+ hours.  For the post-game, it was drink all you can as fast as you can for Bear fans.  Then the next weekend is another Bear loss that shouldn't have been, and the Alabama loss to Auburn.  Ed, I'm still suffering that loss.  It may have messed up the whole Bowl picture.

Suzi, with the Bears and Packers so deep in key injuries, it looks like Detroit will most likely prevail this year.  However, right now, it looks like the Super Bowl Champ will most likely come out of the AFC.  I hate that too.

Linda, how is that Baseball team progresssing?  Ha! Ha!

Rod:

The Chihuahuas have just named a manager:  some guy by the last name of Murphy.  I try to avoid anything and everything about them.  As I read the newspaper, I just turn over the Sports Section without reading it.   However, sometimes the headlines make it into my memory.   Yuk.

Are you due to get snow from the latest dip in the Jet Stream?   So far we are just getting a cool-down and wind up to 45 mph.

Merry Christmas to you and your's!   I pray that the New Year brings health, wealth, and a lot of happiness!

Linda

And a Merry Christmas to ya'll and your family.  Yes, the Arctic air stream is moving in tonight.  Cold, maybe light snow.  But, mostly freezing rain.  You know how it is here.  A little ice or snow and everything shuts down.  The new Manager you mention is Pat Murphy.   He might be a good choice.  He had a very short career in the Big Time.  But, he has been a coach manager for a long time in the Minors, in Arizona and the West Coast.

Stay warm!!

Rod, Mike, et al,

First thanks for the kind words about Brennan and his win... Yes Its nice to be a proud grandpa, but I am proud of him, win, lose or draw because he knows how to handle all three with grace... there I go braggin again, but it was motorcycle racing that taught him that..

Now for the Alabama Auburn game. Yall just dont understand the dynamics at play here. That may be the oldest and fierciest rivalry in college football. For years the game was played in Birmingham because it was neutral territory When the series resumed at the respective campuses, there were death threats... fact!

It does not matter what the standings are, if one of the schools is winless up to that game, and then beats the other, it is a successful season... one win is a success if it is against the other school.

I have Auburn Grads as well as Alabama grads in my family and on that weekend, I am glad I live in Illinois.

There is a contest that BHS is involved in that needs our help. They are competing for a $3,000 piano for A Cappella and need our votes. Go to http://www.literock107.com/ and vote on the high school contest.

Michael (Mike) Franks

Ed, you know many years ago when I was at Redstone, I got caught up in the Alabama-Auburn hype. Being from here, I thought college football was all Big 10. I know exactly what you are refering to. That game makes the SuperBowl look like a scrimage. Since those days, long ago, I've always understood what that game meant. With two great schools and two great programs, it's a shame that they have to keep score, because they are both winners. I guss ya gotta' have braggin' rights.

Milan - thanks for the heads up on the choir competition.   Hope BHS wins the piano!

Milan:

Does our class need a little fundraising to help with the piano deal?

Linda

12/07/13 09:06 AM #4177

Milan Jackson

This isn't about raising money for the piano, it's just about votes. Some classes do fund raisers but it's not for me to suggest that you folks do it. Our class bought 25 turkeys for Home Sweet Home Missions. They were very short of their goals for Thanksgiving. We got a deal and only paid $250. Donations were pretty easy to raise.
