Mike Franks:

Funny you mention Hueco Tanks: It is a state park with world class rock climbing.  I am amazed how many climbers come from the Netherlands to climb.

Now you have to make reservations and prepay to attend.   Only guided tours of the petroglyphs are allowed too!   No more roaming around like we use to be able to do!

I have owned a 'bit' of property near  'the tanks'.  Currently, I have the last 300 acres up for sale.  We have owned all of that land for over 30 years and bought it for peanuts.  In fact, property taxes were based on the same concept of a sand pit!

Did you ever go out to the Red Sand Hills in that same area?  I have sold my land there too!  They are making water ranchs to keep underground water for the county.

Happy New Year!

Linda

If it looks like rain, it seems to be enough to close schools for safety here!   When we were young, no matter how bad the weather, I don't remember school closing!   Do you?

Happy New Year!

You guys sure have good memories. Jack that Jax ad is hysterical. And what an amazing surprise...it was done by Mike Nichols and Elaine May. For those who may not know of them, they were the founders of the improv group that became Second City. Nichols has had an amazing career and has been married to Diane Sawyer for about 25 years. Fascinating stuff. You might like to look him up on Wikipedia.

Linda, you mean you didn't have to go to school last week? You're right, I can't remember having a snow day, and boy, did we have the snow. What I do remember is that like clock work, Jan. 1 was always so cold that a hunded kids would show up at Lakeside Country Club to ice skate. To keep warm we would go in the club house where the tables had half full bottles (notice the optimism) of champaigne left over from New Year's Eve. As we got older, we took advantage of that adult oversight. Don't know if it helped our skating, but it sure warmed us up. lol

Balmy weather ahead for Chicago this week.

It's a great day.  The Big Game is tonight, AND NHL HOCKEY is back.  I can hardly wait.

Great commercial Jack.  I don't know about Jax, but Pearl is still alive and well here in Texas, along with Lone Star.

Mel, you really brought back some memories with the Lakeside Skating.  I wish I had a dollar for every hour I spent on that lake.  I remember one time me and Jerry Naffziger were jumping  X-Mas trees, garbage cans, and all kinds of things.  We were both really fast and crazy.  So, we decided we would jump the piers.  I had figure skates on.  I took off and was really flying.  I jumped, pulled my legs up under me.  I was over, until one of my toes caught the pier edge.  Suddenly, I was spread eagle.  Well, Jerry tried and at the last second he rolled over.  That was the end of that.  You know the Fire Dept. would come out when it was calm and spray water on the lake so it would be smooth.  Try getting that done today.  But the great fun was when Steve Huber's older brother would bring his VW Beetle down on the lake and we would play crack the whip.  Those were some fun times.

Linda.  Talk about confussed.  The first couple winters after we came to Texas, all the kids around us would talk about how they would get out of school a few days early because they didn't use all their SNOW DAYS.  Once I found out what they meant, I had a few good stories for them.  Sometimes, I don't think they really believed me.  Ha!

Well Jerry, Cincy went out quick, so I'm all in on the 49'ers.  Tough game coming up though.

Did anyone see where Pete Elliot died.  Him and his brother Bump were pretty well known around the B/N area

Milan, have you talked to Carroll Lane lately?

Hey Max  -  Quick queston.  When you went to Il. State, did you ever have a Prof. or Teacher named Charles Pendleton?

Rod

Rod, I did see the news of Pete Elliott's passing.   Here's an interesting coincidence: my family lived in the old "Doc Elliott" home on East Jefferson street for 14 years, 1991-2005.   A big old barn of a house that we really enjoyed.  Great location for kids going through BHS & BJHS, too.

I never met Pete or Bump but knew brother Jim - not well - from my State Farm days.

A fun story about how Bump supposedly acquired his nickname.   Got the story from Steve Struck (U-high, class of '62 or '63 I think), from whom we bought the house.  On the west side is a single story sun porch with a flat roof.  The story goes that back in their childhood days, the Elliott kids would go out on the roof (via a window I'd guess) on summer nights to escape the heat inside.    Chalmers became Bump one evening when he rolled off the roof onto the ground.  I asked Jim once if it was true and he sort of smiled and said it might be.

If I've shared this before, sorry.  That's what you get with a guy who's gonna be 67 in a few months.

Charles Pendleton was in the Industrial Technology department when I was there, but I didn't have him for an instructor.  Why do you ask?

You're right, Ed.  Notre Dame didn't belong there having lost to Stanford and almost to Pitt.  So Alabama showed them for what they were, a media event.  Either Stanford or Oregon would have made a better game of it.

Hi everyone!  Not trying to make us feel old or anything but............

Today my father would have been 113.    My oldest sister turns 88 in 10 days.  With all of us 9 kids, you can tell they weren't into planned parenthood!

A guy I graduated with down here, remarried after his wife died.  He married a young chick and has a new child at age 66.   Better him than me!

I'm sticking with grandchildren only and we're finished having them!

Suzi:  Any news with Dave?

Love to y'all!

Linda

We had snow days in high school Mel . I was walking to school when a lady came out and told me they had closed the school! So I then walked across town to Paul Kerners house, on the way I saw a VW bus hit the curb and tip over! Now see what you started I have not though of that in years.smiley

Linda,

Never under estimate the power of modern chemistry for men. My question for someone like that would be, "Why?"  He apparently went to the wrong doctor. He should have had his brain removed from between his legs, and re-installed between his ears. Huge ego, i guess.

Mike:

I feel sorry for the baby.  I can't see him being very active, for very long, with the upbringing of that child.

Maybe the mother is looking for $$$$$.  Then again, maybe that will be his best child!   Who knows!

Have a good day!

Linda

The TIDE ROLLED and it was a spectacular night.  I'll never understand the hype that goes with ND every year, but I'm always for anybody playing ND.  Not that anyone could beat Alabama, but I agree with Jerry.  I still think the best chance belonged to the Ducks.  And if Ohio State would not have been sanctioned, that would have been a great game to watch.

Steve, that's a good story and most likely true.

Linda, maybe this guy you know should get in touch with Rod Stewart.  His thinking is right there with him.

Max, here is my reason for asking about Chuck, as I always referred to him.  As a kid, Chuck and his parents lived right around the corner from my cousin in Heyworth, Il.  He was a few years older than us, but at that time in dinky little Heyworth, everybody knew everybody.  Chuck went on to college was never a thought to me again.  That is until my son started playing Jr. Football.  He, (my son), got to be good friends with a kid named Mike and another named Jimmy.  (As time went on they all got to be really great friends and still are).  Well, Mike's parents loved to camp and went quite often.  Mike hated to do that.  As time passed, Mike would come and spend week-ends with us.  I think he spent more time at our house than his. Ha!  That was OK, since our house was a gathering place for a lot of the kids anyway.  Oh, I forgot to tell you, Mike's last name was Pendleton.  One time after a football game, a bunch of parents went out to eat.  As conversation progressed, Chuck and I were just small talking.  Something sparked the conversation to Heyworth, Il.  I looked at Chuck and said, did you used to live around the corner from Dean and Nancy Slayback?  He paused a second and said, no, you are not, and I said, yes I am.  Our families got to be real good friends and did things together, (except camping), until Chuck retired and moved to Florida.  So, that was my reason for asking if you knew him.

I think it was you Suzi that said Lovie is gone, thank you , thank you.  I'm right there with you.  Now there is talk here that he may come to the Cowboys as Defensive Co-Ord.  If he makes that move, he better practice getting hammered by the press.  Not just during football season.  They do it here 12 months a year.  I hope he goes somewhere else myself.  I got so tired of his act in Chicago.

Linda,

In the years after the civil war, this happened a lot in the south.

The entire economy of the area was destroyed by war... no one had anything, but...

a few years after the war, many of the Confederate veterans got state penisons, and to a young girl with no hope and no future, sharing a pension with an old veteran was a prize... and all one had to do was bat her lashes at him, well and other parts too, marry him and she was set for life... callous, I don't think so, it was the times and we see that sort of thing after every war..or used to..

At any rate, the last person with a legitimate claim to being the offspring of a confederate soldier died in 2006 or 2007...  very young soldier, very old veteran father, very young mother...

Her funeral wa attended by literally thousands of the descendents of confederate soldiers, many many in uniform. Flags flying everywhere... 1st Nationals, 2nd and 3rd Nationals, Bonnie Blues and Battleflags, the procession went on for miles..

She was born, lived, died and is buried in Alabama

Ed:

Yes, I agree and am very well aware of those times.   My degree is in history!

However, that type of situation does not apply here.  He married someone younger than his daughter.  I believe (no matter how nice of a person he is) that a lonely, horny, old man was not acting in control but decided to live it up because ..........we're all gonna die sometime!   I reiterate: I feel bad for the child.

Nice to hear from you Ed.  Hope you're doing well!

Linda

Don't even need a state pension if you have a few bucks and maybe some industrial strength Viagra.......

Jack, my friend:

I dislike seeing women using men or allowing themselves to be used.  It sends female issues back to the 1800's.  How are we ever going to be taken seriously as a thinking, working human being, who can earn the bacon and go home and cook it up too!  I find these situations a cop out!  You can bet my daughter would never act like that!  Thank God!  We choose to work for what we get!

Love ya, Linda

Michael (Mike) Franks

Rod,

You asked about Chuck Pendelton. I had him as an instructor at ISU. I had just returned from Vietnam and enrolled at ISU. I was pretty screwed up with the culture change between the two places. I was basicly lost, since I didn't fit in with either culture. Little did I know, that it would be years before I was able to put things back together and move on. Pendelton was a huge influence in my life at that time. He took an honest interest in returning veterans, (there were many) and I will always be thankful for him as a human being. You know, there are good people in this shity world.......Chuck is one of those people.

Jack,

I think Hef is almost as old as Mick Jagger. There isn't that much Viagra in the world! Hef''s elixir is green paper, with pictures of dead presidents on one side.   He's got  to be pretty creeky in bed, and he probably snores like a frieght train going up hill..........Wait! I just descibed myself.

01/10/13 09:36 AM #3561

Jack Habich

Well Mike, Hef still has his mansion, Jagger still shows up at concerts, and your cousin still has his State Farm retirement.

You and I...we don't even have a state pension.  That explains why the 22 year olds are keeping some distance.

As the father of three daughters and gradfather to 7 grandaughters, Linda I agree with your perspective and think the women of our generation have done a pretty good job progressing change in traditional roles.(Generally when asked about my family I'll note I was raised by a wife and three daughters.)

PERSONAL NOTE of celebration:

We've been quite but nowI must add how proud of my wife I am.  Kathy Morris (BHS '66) has been battling overain cancer since May and her last PET scan shows she is cancer free, in remission.  It's been a tough road but felt the good news worth sharing as a demonstration there is also light at the end of this dark disease's tunnel.  Now we focus on her hair style as it returns. Stay positive!

Otherwise:

Since Saturday I'll be out on the golf course,,,,

Jerry

That is wonderful news.  I know this a tremendous mental and physical victory for her and you.*  She is obviously a strong woman, and has a great support system with you and your family.  I know hair is very important to women, but living and enjoying life is far more satisfying.

Jerry, tough game coming up for the 49'ers.  GB is tough in the play-offs, so all cylinders have to be working full bore.

Mike,

Of course, I had no idea you and Chuck knew each other.  It's good to hear the things you mentioned about him.  Unless you know him, like I did, in a social setting, he really did take a lot of interest in his students and really wanted for them to move forward.  He is one of the good guys.
