Today I found out that the class of '62 as well as '63 have celbrated their reunions in October with the regular Homecoming game and activities.  How did that go Milan?   Actually, that was the concept behind Homecoming to have alumni return.

Question:  Then why are we having our reunion in the summers to sweat like heck and stink?

Curiously,  Linda

The class of 62 is having their's in October of this year. The class of 1963 is having our's next fall. The class of 1962's reunion is the week after homecoming. Homecoming this year is the same weekend as ISU. The homecoming next year won't be scheduled until after the last game of 2012. So we have no idea.

Milan:

Thanks for answering me.

The weather has to be more comfortable at that time.  Isn't it usually in the 70's in October?

Please let us know how comfortable it goes for those 2 classes!

Linda

I was a special guest at the 50th class reunion for the class of 1961 and it was a beautiful day. Weather-wise, autumn is a great time to have a reunion but I am not getting in the middle of your plans.

Although everyone is encouraged to participate in Homecoming every year, it has been my understanding that the Class of 64 Reunion committees in the past have believed that the summer schedule draws more people. A lot of long distance attendees are more likely to work it into their vacation plans. However, as increasing numbers of us retire, who knows? Homecoming is for everyone of all years. Milan, you  seem to be ageless and cross the boundaries of many other age groups, it would be interesting to know how successful the other classes have been with theirs. Just thinking our loud here, what if the mini-reunions included Homecoming weekend next year?

I have been active in helping classes from 1960 through 1964 in many ways. Mostly in finding missing classmates. I was invited to the 1960 reunion as a special guest, but turned them down. I thought it would be self-serving for me to attend a reunion when I went to BHS with none of them. I helped the same way with the class of 1961. I did accept their invitation to see how it went for the most part. I am on the planning committee for the class of 1962. I set up their website and helped organize the committee and am still searching for a few of their missing classmates. I do this because I think the 50th is the last chance many people will take the time to travel a long distance to see old friends and they all need the opportunity to be there. All of these are and were in the autumn.

I am on the committee for the class of 1963, my class. In none of these did I make a suggestion for the date but ours.  I've had more than my share of pats on the back. Our feeling for the class of 1963 is that most either are retired or will be by September of 2013 and many don't like summer travel if we don't have to. Now that our annual schedule is ours to control, we tend to want comfort more than convenience of a calendar.

I am here to help the class of 1964 where I can, but influencing the time of your reunion isn't of interest to me.

You need to be asking your classmates what they want. The most important thing here is attendance. What you have, where you have it, how much it cost, none of these are as important as getting the most to attend you possibly can. This is the most important reunion you will ever plan. Give it as much attention as you can.

Also you need to be reaching as many missing classmates as you can. That should be a priority but it's your party, I am just here to help.

Milan, thank you for the info.   I'm not trying to involve you in anything else though.

Mel, thanks for your input.

I have enjoyed the mini-reunions.   It just seems as though our 50th could be in conjunction with Homecoming and be more comfortable.

Thanks again.

Linda

Don't get me wrong, I have an opinion. But the committee has enough to worry about trying to make as many people happy as possible without having an out-sider second guessing them. The committee has a thankless job.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Milan, it's no wonder everyone wants your input, you've been amazingly helpful and most artfully stated your reasons to keep some distance. Having served on past committees and having declined to be on this one, I totally agree that those organizing the 50th have a daunting job ahead of them. There is no reason that we can't express opinions here, but the committee will work hard to reach the best decisions it can for a successful event. Again, in Milan's words, that success is measured most by getting as many as possible to attend. Toward that goal we should all be supportive and grateful to all those who volunteered for this committee. It is virtually impossible that they will be able to please everyone, but they will make every effort to do just that.

Just like the "Proud Mary", the Class of 64 keeps on churning, rolling down the river. Tina Turner said she can sing it "nice and easy" but she prefers "nice and rough". We've had it both ways, and still, we've kept this proud aging boat rolling for almost a half-century.

I do have a suggestion for those not on the committee. Put your past behind you and attend this 50th reunion. Who cares who was what in high school, you all shared an important part of your lives. Forget any bitterness, jealousy, or any other ill feelings. Time isn't running out but it is shorter than you think. I never went to my class reunions and for that I am deeply sorry. I am doing the best I can to make up for it. Don't make that mistake. This is about survivors. Be one. Re-new friendships that will last the rest of your lives. Old, fat, bald, broke, skinny, rich, fit, none of these matter. You do.

Very well put Milan!  The older I get, the more I realize that relationships with other people are what really matters in life.  I can not count the times I have reconnected with people I knew in my teens and twenties with whom I felt I had little in common (partly because I really wasn't sure who I was and thus often viewed myself in a negative way) only  to discover that they are  fascinating people I truly enjoy...and that they weren't as confident as I had always assumed.

I do regret that it took me so long to reconnect with so many of you and I hope to continue connecting going forward.  Life has been full of challenges and raising seven children took the majority of my time and energy for many years, but I look forward to renewing and deepening my connections from the past!!

Yes Milan, finding everyone is a big effort.   That is why I advocated that we not send postcards but put them in envelopes.   The post office will return any that are the incorrect address.  This will give us a list to locate ASAP for the 50th reunion.  It is the most efficient way of ascertaining who has moved (or other reasons) and not notified us.  We can start from their email addresses and phone numbers.  Sometimes they will still have one or the other.

Linda

i suppose I am the poster boy for those who did not attend any reunions. I only spent one year with you, or so my thinking went, and assumed none of us would have anything in common. I moved around a lot when growing up and was used to turning my back on places and never seeing friends from those areas again.

Boy was I wrong. I am so glad Sue, Marv and Mel harassed me till I agreed to attend the 09 reunion. I had a ball at Gill Street last summer and can't wait for this one...

50th... yea I will be there... God willing!

We are now Snowbirds and fly away during the cooler months therefore any Class Reunions planned after September aren't good times for us to attend. Thank you's go to all who voluntarily put so many hours into all that is done to plan so many functions enabling the Class of 64 to keep in touch with on another. "Go Raiders!"

In the for what it's worth department, Kate and I are simply looking forward to seeing classmates at anytime during the year.  While we think surrounding the event with Homecoming is a great notion and high on the humidity avoidance scale, the event is more important than the time of year.

Regardless, our reunion isn't for another two years so who knows where we'll be and what we'll be.  Hopefully we're all still standing, supported by a extra large bottle of cabernet and a sturdy straw.
