Mike,

Welcome to the Forum!  Don't be shy... just jump in there with the rest of us.  Anything you say, can but won't be used against you in a court of law!   Good to have you on board.

You'll learn not to trust Jetton... he speaks with a forked tongue and will do anything to win!

Max

Thanks Max!

Steve, you were a great opponet. We always measure ourselves against the best. Those were some fun days. I DO remember that "ringer" you brought in. We thought we were going to rock him. All he did was to continue to fan our batters. Gee, those kids are all grown now and probably have no memory of such things. For us, it's vivid!

Mike, Ed White, my Brother-In-Law (Fast Eddie), is in failing health.  He continues to have strokes and speaks slower and slower each time we see him.  He and my sister now live in my Mother's home near Downs.  We saw him in June briefly, while there, and since we don't see him that often, is slowly failing.  He was concerned about getting his Drivers License renewed, however apparently passed the test, because he's still driving.  I wasn't aware that you worked with Ed.

Susie, we have tons of deer in our yard daily.  We'd be happy to share the deposits they leave in our front yard and the Bear droppings too.  Not only do we have lots of deer, we also have a Mountain Lion, Black Bear, Brown Bear, Turkey, Bobcats, Wolves, Cyote, Skunk (too many) and who knows what I left out.  The Mountain Lion seen next door in a neighbors driveway, is a bit alarming since we have a Bichon Frise. That's a snack for big game.  Needless to say, our back yard is well lit when we let our dog out.  We lost our Cocker Spaniel because he was sprayed by a mamma skunk and her babies in our 6' fenced backed yard.  What an experience to deal with.  Our Cocker came to our patio door dripping wet from the skunk at 10:00 PM.  It wasn't a fun thing to deal with at that time of night.  We've learned to watch our dog whenever he goes out because of that experience.  Eventually our dog went blind from the spray.  It can be deadly to animals.  So sad!

Mike, my husband and I are well and enjoying retirement.  We plan to leave Manitou Springs, CO, right after Christmas, and travel to Gulf Shores, AL, to join Carol McCauley Swartz and Alan Swartz and Judy Tynan Danielson and George Danielson for 3 months. We are hoping to travel back to the West Coast the following winter for 5-6 months, as long as we remain healthy and Obama doesn't take our SSI away from us!wink  One never knows what is in store for our futures, but we plan to have a GREAT TIME and go out fighting as long as we can!

Milan,

What was the name of the Burger Joint on the Gulf Coast Highway?  We haven't been down that way yet.  Did take a trip to Navel Air Base to Imax theater today then drove 15 mi to the nearest Steak & Shake. Sure was good.  Amazing when its around the corner you don't go but when you know you can't have it is when you get the cravings. Weather been beautiful until today, 50's all week.  Sure do miss Wednesday breakfasts.  Say  hi to all and maybe see you soon.

Helen, it sounds like you have a zoo - maybe you should start charging a fee and you and your neighbors could hire someone to be the poop scooper upper.  If I saw some of those animals you would need a poop scooper for me too!!!!!!!!!!

Went out to eat with Terry Snow and Di last week.  I didn't realize his shoulder was as bad as it is.  He is really in a lot of constant pain.  It will be at least 2-3 months yet before he can get it repaired.  He ate pretty good, but not his usual and not as much.  I still think he knows something that he's keeping to himself.  He's lost 60 lbs..  Actually, he looks really good, but??  I'll send an update when I see him next.

Oh, Mr. Franks, as for the Legion Baseball.  There were some really stout teams to come out of the Oakland School area.  Especially those that were sponsered by DeMents Grocery.

Hi, Rod. You are so right. There were a lot of great athletes that lived in the Oakland area. Irving, Bent, and Washington schools always semed to produce good kids and strong rivalries, as well.

That is true Mike.  I remember, every time we had to venture over to Miller Park, it seemed more times than not, we always had to play The Daily Pantagraph.  And they always had great pitching.  Those were fun times.  I wouild always go right to the Sports on Sunday to see what day, what field, and who we played that week.  Oh, the  old days.

My huband, Tommy Thompson, played Baseball for The Daily Pantagraph.  He was their catcher and has knee problems because of it OR maybe it could just be a sign of old age?  Suppose?  He played with Delmar (Butch) Smock, Tom Jefferson, Rick Fairand, Eddie Quaid and several more, but can't remember all their names.  They seemed to have lots of fun and parties to follow!  Anything to encourage a party would do at their young ages of early 20's to 30's.

Nice 6th grade picture...  Looks like Tim Schmidt and Jerry Plummer both shopped at the same shirt store :)

Gerald (Jerry) Plummer

Terry, Very observant and clearly you can see Tim and I both received fashion- forward advice from Jack Keefe and Larry Chase.  Stripes were in.

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Milan,  great picture.  I have the same one somewhere in a box.  Max, I can't believe you didn't notice my, oh so cool Desert Boots.  Also, no one seemed to notice that Steve Huber's neck was sore that day.  Only two people would understand why Mike Cox and myself were on the ends, setting down.  Him & Me.  We were the two shortest, (including the girls I think), in the class.  If we weren't on the first row ends, we would throw off the picture balance, or be totally lost in the second or third row.

12/02/11 01:52 PM #2378

Steve Jetton

Looks like Steve had a case of precocious degenerative disc disease.  Took me another 40 years to get to the point where I sometimes had to hold my neck like that.

Rod, if I had been in that class there would have been three runts instead of two.  How in the heck would they have arranged the picture then?  I guess one of us would have had to move off the end and sit on a telephone book.

Speaking of fashion, the short, big cuffed jeans caught my eye right away.  No doubt it was a cool fashion statement back in those days.  At least at Oakland School.  Might be where I was, we would have looked askance at that particular style.  Don't remember.

The thing that caught my eye in both Holly's and this last Oakland School picture was how the girls were bigger than the guys at that age.

Also, the rolled up jeans caught my eye as a fashion statement that made sense from a standpoint of frugality.  During a period of rapid growth, the cuffs would just get smaller

12/02/11 05:03 PM #2380

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Steve, If you had went there with us, all three of us would have set on each others shoulders, eliminated one name and stood next to Jack Keefe.  High cuffs were the best place to hide candy, gum, spit balls, etc.  I think Hastings came up with that idea.

Michael (Mike) Franks

ASKANCE?

How long have you been waiting to insert that into a conversation? It is in Webster's New Collgiate Dictionary, so I confess, I had to look it up. Not something that  "Larry the Cable Guy"  would utter.

12/02/11 11:08 PM #2382

Terry (Max) Maxwell

Rod...  I did noice the desert boots.  I had a pair with those gum rubber soles and you outgrew them before you wore them out.  They were cool... probably why you had a pair!  I remember rolling the cuffs up double to keep them smaller rather than one giant cuff.

Ya Jerry... I also noticed the others with striped shirts but they didn't look identical like yours and Tim's.  Must have shopped at Mobe's!

And I might add, if I would have been at Oakland School for that picture (with Jetton) then we would have balanced it out with 2 short guys on each end of the front row.  Maybe that's how they decided which school you went to.  They split us all up to balance the school pictures, and all these years you thought it was decided by where you lived!

Mike... like you, I had to go to the old mayonnaise jar on Funk & Wagnalls front porch to look up askance... nice work, that's a 15 cent word, Steve!

Steve was never without his thesaurus.  Used to embarrass me.

He developed a vocabulary that makes us all seem illiterate.  He always held back unless he was around intellectuals, though.  Didn't want to seem stilted.  But now that he's 65, he's apparently letting the words fly in any kind of company.  Save them for what?

12/03/11 06:14 AM #2384

Michael (Mike) Franks

I thought that I Iwas well read with an average vocabulary, but I realize now, that what was written on the walls of the men's room of the Wareco station doesn't measure up. Good place to find a blind date though.
