Jack,

Hopefully you covered your meal with a nice Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc vintage 2007 or earlier.

Jerry,

Steve Jetton did not show the courtesy to bring me back any.

To make things worse, I was on temp medication that contradicted alcohol.  I drank water.  The real tragedy, however, was that that particular evening, there was free wine tasting; they offered endless samples at the tables, and the bar was full of samplings ready for testing.

Next time, there will be a bottle of Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc at the table.  This will show that I'm not geographically shackled, and am quite willing to sample the best that each part of the country has to offer.

Thanks for enlightening me, as did Marilyn and Ed.

Hey Julie, when you were drawing blood from some of the old cowboys I may have been giving them Physical Therapy.  I worked for the orthopedic clinic that did all of the cowboys surgeries in the early 70s and rehabbed a bunch of them.

As to 15 minutes of fame, I'd guess I'd have to say mine occurred on the Letterman Show...or not quite. 13 or 14 years or so ago, I got a phone call asking me if my name was Holly Wood.  I said yes, why.  The response was that it was the Letterman Show calling and they wanted me to come to NYC to be part of the special Denver show (they picked a few cities, had a drawing for places and flew a plane load to be the audience).  Anyway, I asked the woman which of my kids had put her up to calling me.  I was sure it was a joke.  She gave me a number to call back.  I saw the area code and thought "Holy S**t".  Well, 13 of us were flown to NYC, met by a limo, taken to the rehearsal and to meet Letterman, then back to our hotel for a couple of ours, back to the studio for dinner, and then 10 of the 13 were selected to appear on the show and say our names as the top ten list. Mary Christmas, Rocky Mountain, and I were the 3 not chosen (I think our names were too tame as number 1 was Dick Smoker).  But we got to sit in the Green Room with Tony Randle, Jeff Goldblum and Foo Fighters.  Then we went back to the hotel, some folks went out drinking and I walked until 3 in the morning around Broadway and much of the city as I had never been there.  We were provided breakfast, lunch, and a bus tour of the city the next day and flown back to Colorado the next evening.  It really was a lot of fun.

And Jerry...I prefer the Alexander Valley wines.  My daughter and her partner have a home in Healdsburg and we've spent some wonderful weekends up there and truly enjoyed the fruit of the vine.

Alexander Valley is Napa 40 years ago. Great wines and often under appreciated.  I will see your Alexander Valley and raise you Carneros, however noting I've often had to remind AV lovers the only true Zin is grown in Lodi.  (which is of course my home town.)

Marilyn, and I bet they were good.  Just go get some more, along with Anson Mills Grits, and you'll be all set.

This Message Forum does more than just make you hungry though.  With all the connoisseurs (had to look up the spelling) of fine music, foods, wines and cigars, not to mention the famous amongst us, it can really expand horizons.

Look guys, all these long names and super high prices.  Swirling a bunch of mashed grape juice in a crystal glass by Tiffany, and telling someone how good it is or isn't.  That's BS.  The real wines are Ripple, Thunderbird, TJ Swan, Bali Hai, MD 20-20, etc..  I mean, millions of winos can't be wrong.  Just give me Gentleman Jack on Ice, or a Miller Lite.  They are what they are, and they will be everytime.

Jack, you do me an injustice.  I most certainly brought back a bottle of savignon blanc to save for the next time you come to town.  Unfortunately, I suffered an attack of low will power and it's gone.  If I know in advance the next time I'll be seeing you, I'll head over to Trader Joe's and pick up a bottle of Two Buck Chuck.

 Two Buck Chuck's the best!

Two Buck Chuck (actually) $2.95 in the Midwest, is the choice of many I know, even one guy who made well over $1 million per year.  In exclusive Hinsdale, they did a blind taste test of various wines, and Two Buck Chuck prevailed.

So Steve, while I would have preferred that you had brought me some fine Sonoma or Alexander Valley wines and/or had the discipline to save them for a time I could actually drink them,  I would not be offended by Two Buck Chuck.

And Rod, you forgot Boone's Farm, which I don't think they make anymore.  Only time I ever got tipsy drinking by myself was in the early 70's.  I found myself in Burlington Iowa, absolutely nothing going on anywhere, so I went to the liquor store and got myself a bottle of Boone's Farm for $1, I think it was, and adjourned to my hotel room.  Later, I discovered Boone's Farm contained high amounts of formaldehyde, so we ended our association.

Holly,

Your Letterman experience.......now that's a story.  An interesting side story is that you didn't get mugged.

As far as Julie, I suspect she's drawn blood from a lot of people, and will yours too....as soon as she finds a bad picture of you.

Jack, one thing about your experience with Boone Farm, you certainly got pickled before your time!

Just read a story about my mother-in-law on a women's web page called Glass Heel.

http://glassheel.com/get-ahead/you-have-love-what-you-do

It's kind of a long read, but the long and short of it is that she is 91 years old, lives alone, goes to work every day, drives all over including downtown,  and played frequent golf up until about 3 years ago. In the last 20 years, she's pretty much traveled all over the world, including the Great Wall of China a few years ago.  Three years ago, she toured Spain.

What's also noteworthy, is that she was largely repsonsible for building up an insurance business without even having a HS education.  She even won American Business Women's Association "Woman of the Year" award in 1979, an organization in which just about everyone else had college degrees.

Jack, your Mother-in-law, is a great example of how to live a full and successful life.  We give her a BIG HAND OF APPLAUSE!  Thanks for sharing!

Yes, Helen, she's a strong example of that.

The young author called Dee and is all perturbed because she got a couple of things wrong.  No, Rose does not get a manicure twice per week, but every two weeks instead.  And, the Panama Canal was already built when Dee's father qualified to go there...he didn't intend to go build it......but to work there......but the guy told him he needed to be in the war...so he became a navigator on a bomber and got regularly shot at by the German "88's".  After WW2, he never got on an airplane again.

(PS  the author changed the article so some of the above does not apply)

My dad flew fighters (P-39D) and Bombers (B-29) during WWII and even tho he did not retire from the army until 1975, he never flew again after WWII and a short stint in the Alabama National Guard

Saturday will be The Breeders Cup, as always, the richest horse racing day of the year.  It's at Churchill Downs this year and could be a history maker.  Sorry Jack, but Shackleford will not run in the Classic.  He will however be in the Dirt Mile.  Don't expect a win.  The favorite will for sure be Uncle Mo.  But a great Philly named Havre de Grace could give him a super race, if she isn't intimidated by the Boys.  Game on Dude is trained by Baffert, so you never count his horse out.  But this horse may be a few races short of being ready for this race.  Some like Flat Out, with good reason, but I don't like the jockey.  So for me, it's no bet.  One of the best paying long shots will most likely be Ruler on Ice, winner of the Belmont.  He is a good horse and should have a good carrier, but I don't think he is ready to run with the big boys yet.  This is not a bunch of 3 year olds.  Most of these horses have already made their owners happy $$$$$$.  Maybe a $2 bet to place just for fun.  Remember, I'm not a registered handicapper, and most of these horses have potential, so look before you leap.  I just hope it's a fast track, there is no stumbling or heavy rains.  That way we'll see if Uncle Mo is as Great as some say he is.

Ed, I think it's called conditioning...if, over a period of time, you got shot at every time you drove your car, you probably wouldn't take too many road trips afterwards.

Rod, I'll keep my eye on Uncle Mo tomorrow, but I can't bet.....saving my money for Sonoma and Alexander Valley wines.

Jack  --  You  worry me.  Anyone who saves money to buy wine has a problem.  You're not living under a bridge now, are you?  By the way.  You are 100% right on Arnold.  His new movie is called Last Stand.  I saw the first picture release of him.  Don't look for any showing of the muscle.  There is none.  He appears to have a slight gut, NO traps at all, very small lats, if any.  Since he is of average height, unlike most people think, he just looks like some kids Grand Pa on the street.  But, I'm sure he'll drag his flabby ass to the bank though.
