Harriett (Holly) Rust (Wood)

Hi All.  I have been busy in Seattle with my daughter and granddaughter and haven't caught up with what's happening for about a month.  I did want to add a little info about Bump and Pete Elliott.  First, the both were All Americans at Michigan and Bump eventually became the head coach and then athletic director there.  I think he also coached at Oregon State and Iowa.  Pete was the head coach at Illinois (also Nebraska, Cal, and I think Miami) and so they played each other.  Their father was an eye doctor in Bloomington and their mother was my grandmother's sister.  Bonnie Williamson's dad married Pete and Bump's sister while we were in high school, I think.  Bumps given name is Chalmers.

More later!  I have to pick up my granddaughter.

Judy Tynan D....we once talked about your mother's cousin (I believe he was), Stefan Hirsch.  Here he is with his school buddies, front row left, in Alt Sankt Anna , Romania, circa 1936-7.  Alt Sankt Anna was the seed of the Hungarian Club.  Too bad Steve Wilson is not around to doctor up the old pictures.

Jack, you may be on to something with that memorable sports thing.  I have a very vivid picture of Steve, (Jetton) and I once.  We were on the same baseball team, playing at BHS on the NW corner field.  Steve was walking to bat and this guy swung and caught him on the back swing under his eye lid.  I still remember the sound, the blood flew, Steve went down.  I was so upset.  I couldn't eat or get settled down.  Here was one of my great buddies and I just knew he would be blind.  Thank God he recovered good as new.  I can still see that whole event taking place.

No, I don't have amnesia.  Mel Theobald took it upon himself to correct the previous picture, and may just have sentenced himself to a Wilsonian future of being the go-to guy for messed up photos.  Fine job, thanks Mel.  Judy, I'll try to find your e-mail and send you a large attachment, suitable for making a good sized print, if you or your sister (the historian) care to.  Looks like Hirsch had the coolest hat.

Rod,

I don't think that there is any question that stress enhances memory, and sports gives you stress, both good and bad.  That's why we remember minute sports related details long after we've forgotten everything else.  Sounds like Steve, like Terry Snow, was both lucky and unlucky.

What's up with Terry, by the way?

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

My wife was going to talk with Di yesterday or today, so, hopefully, I'll have an update shortly.  I may call him myself.  You're right, he does have the coolest hat for sure.  By the way.  Is that Prince Charles standing behind him on the far left end?

10/25/11 05:29 PM #2194

Jack Habich

You know, I was trying to figure out who that guy looked like, and Prince Charles is it.  He drifted to England later.

Joe Namath's family (Nemeth) origins are from the area also, and it looks like Hirsch has a little Nemeth in his face.

Mr. David Gaston.  It's great to have you on this web.  Of course I remember the Shattertones, but I knew you before that.  Although we lived in somewhat different worlds, you used to come by my house on Grove St. almost every morning for toast and hot chocolate, with marshmellows on our way to school.  Those were good times and you were a great friend.  My almost 89 year old mother still remembers that, and every once in awhile, she asks if I know where you are and how you're doing.  I always tell her you are in Ca. and doing wonderful.  You may have forgot, but do you remember when we were in 9th. grade.  You and I were wrestling in the same weight.  I had a head lock on you and we both went off the mat and hit the concrete floor.  You were OK, but I had a dislocated elbow.  What a bummer.  Jetton loved it, because it hampered my wiffle ball pitching for a while Ha! Ha!  Welcome old buddy.

Helen Nicolaysen (Thompson)

Hey there Dave Gaston, what a great joy to have you on board.  Please join all of us!  We've missed you.  Remember, Tommy Thompson and I and Gloria Starkey and Bill Brown had you sing at our wedding!  And do you remember the time Bill Brown wanted us to elope.  You were in the back seat and didn't want any part of it since the people in the South were having serious racial problems at that time.  Anyway, we ended up turning around and driving back to Bloomington because Gloria and I had to work the next day.  Boy were we young and nieve!  Tommy and I will be married 47 years in December, but Gloria and Bill only made it 17 years.  They're both happily re-married.  Those were the days!

my 15 minutes of fame which to this day embarrasses my kids.  when i was in my money accumulation phase i could really stretch a buck ( this allowed me to quit work at 57) and someone turned in my name to a tv station when they were looking for the 'queen of cheap.'  i won and they came to my house and interviewed me.

i also drew blood from alot of the old dallas cowboys

jack - have you saved everything ever printed that remotely had to do with you or anyone you knew????  i've never seen anyone pull so much stuff out his hat (ass?)

rod - tell terry snow i hope he's doing well.

Julie,

What, they ran out of scotchtape down there in Texas?

The Romanian picture was in a shoe box as part of my mother's "estate".  I was hoping to turn it and sell it to Judy T., but I think her computer is packed up for a trip.

Most of the other material comes from my "Bloomington" box in the basement.  It's stuff that's near the top, so you haven't seen anything yet.

Jack, was able to get laptop going. Saw the pic of Stehan Hirsch, my mother,s cousin.  He is in top row at far left.  took me awhile to figure out but his oldest daughter Elizabeth (Ellie, as we call her) looks just like him.  My Grandmother sponsered him and family along with his wife, Marie's, family back in the mid 50's when they escaped from Romania.  Great picture   Thanks

Jack,

The guy in the front row, far left, still has the coolest hat.  But, maybe Judy is related to Prince Charles also.

10/28/11 02:32 PM #2204

Jack Habich

Judy T. and Rod,

"Ellie" might have looked like Prince Charles, but her dad was left FRONT, the guy with the Joe Louis hat. Charles drifted to England, but Hirsch moved to W. Wood Street.

Marilyn, you're off the hook...........had my first fried green tomatoes (topped with crab meat and shrimp) yesterday, and they sure were good.

Also, Ed, my blackened tilapia rested on a bed of "Anson Mills Grits" with brown butter sauce.  These were some seriously good grits.

Marilyn Evans (Tate)

Where are you?  Surely not in Illinois ?

10/30/11 05:52 PM #2208

Jack Habich

In Illinois....new place called French Quarter had their grand opening last night...near Yorktown SC.

Fried Green Tomatoes were on the menu, and since I had been enlightened by this Message Forum, that's what I ordered.  This web site is not just chit chat...it can actually expand horizons. :)

Gumbo was good too.

Jack,After 65 years, it appears you are finally learning how to eat... or what to eat!

Glad you enjoyed some of the samplings of the South
