Jim,

Don't Wait!  Some friends and formor neighbors from Kansas decided to purchase a motorhome and drive around the country to find where they were going to finally retire.  They had both retired before embarking on their journey and they gave themselves 5 years to make their final decision.  We would see pictures from all over and they had a great time in exploring and reaching a conclusion.  They finally settled on Yuma, AZ.  They sold the motorhome and purchased a nice house there.  Then withing a few months, the husband died and his wife moved back to Kansas to be closer to the kids.  Don't Wait.

Sad but true story.

Thanks Dave,  So true.  Our adventure would not be 5 years though.... only about 9-10 months hopefully !  Still lots of details to work out ... so not sure it will come about !

I’ve been negligent in staying touch lately but have had a lot going on. My next door neighbors wife divorced him in mid-January and I invited him to stay at my house while we were in Florida. Having a roommate since my return from Florida has been a big change in my lifestyle. He closed on a house a week ago and has now finished moving his vast array of belongings to his new home. Life may start returning to whatever “normal” is for me now.

My son was here from New Hampshire the past couple of days and my daughter from Texas with my ex-wife (who is in a fairly advanced stage of Alzheimer’s) were in town as well. In addition to all that that has been going on, I managed to get 29 tomato plants in the ground this week along with some fencing in an attempt to avoid last year’s deer invasion of the garden. I have a friend that has some farm property nearby and he has kindly offered space for me to have a tomato garden. It is great to be able to have an unlimited tmato supply during the summer as well as freeze enough for chili in the winter. I supplied the neighbor hood last year and they should be plentiful again this year.

I totally enjoy the humorous stuff that so many have been posting. I will add one at the end here.

Jim – I get your attitude toward maintaining your house and wanting to make some changes. My house keeps me pretty active trying to keep up with yard and landscape needs. However, I feel that physical activity minimizes or delays a lot of deterioration of this aging body. I look at the physical work as a form of exercise and try to focus on the physical benefits as well as the satisfaction of creating a nice environment to enjoy. As you prepare for this new adventure you are considering be sure keep those “potato sacks” handy to get the  exercise you need.

Speaking of exercise, I encountered an article about walking 10,000 steps a day. It was interesting to note that until recently there has never been a real study on that number and that the number of steps per day is pretty arbitrary. In reality the number is dependent on your physical condition. If you can manage 2,000 then that is your number, then every few weeks you can add 1,000 or 2,000 if your strength increases. The important thing is to keep moving as much as you can. Also, 7,000 or 8,000 is more than adequate and 10,000 is not adding much benefit.

The article I mentioned suggested loading an app (Apple Health app) on my cell phone to track my steps. I would encourage any of you to try it. My son and I went to the Merwin Nature preserve Monday and at the end of the day I had walked over 7,500 steps. We went back yesterday with my daughter and I finished the day with over 11,500 steps. That will not be the norm by any means for me, but, I am going to be paying more attention to how much I am walking to stay as mobile as possible for as long as possible. I am looking for a couple of old 10# potato sacks to carry around since Jim thought that would help.

Marv--With 29 tomato plants, you probably plant several varieties.  If you have not tried any of the Heirloom varieties, they might be worth the effort.  They typically don't look like the typical commercial varieties (different shapes and colors), but they generally are very meaty.  If you are into seed recycling, the heirloom seeds are replantable, since these varieties are not hybridized.  That means they should like the plant/fruit where they originated.  Hybrid plants are cross-bred, and frequently revert to the plants of their ancestry.

Marv--As to specific heirloom Tomato varieties, I am partial to Cherokee Purple and Brandywine.  They are all good--especially with bacon and lettuce.

Dave, I am a big fan of Heirloom tomatoes. Marv loves Big Boy, Early Girl, and Beefsteak varieties. Not sure what he planted this year, but I'm pretty sure Heirlooms are not among them because they are not bright red or perfectly round. Maybe you can convince him that Heirlooms are among the most flavorful out there, even though they are not bright orange or uniformly circular. I'd love to know what others are into. Nevertheless, I will gladly accept any tomatoes Marv's garden produces. Year after year, I have been the beneficiary of his generosity. Several years ago, I planted BION tomatoes in his garden and the deer trampled them to the ground. So, I never got to find out if they were as amazing as promised. They were called BION as an acronym for Believe It Or Not. Maybe someday, I'll find out.

Melvin--Many of the Beefsteak varieties are hybridized, but there is an heirloom Beefsteak that I have good luck growing.  Early Girl is 1 of the plants that usually make it into the garden because they  are the first to bear--usually around July 4.

Rookus:  Thank you for the view of beautiful flowers.   I always think that I will take photos of our 13 different kinds of cactus in the Spring.  But, I never do.   I need to put that on my to-do list.

Thanks again!

Nancy Weaver (Cupp)

Jim asked about getting a motor home.  We have watched this lady for a while now, and she has helped many buyers get help.  There have been nightmares of motorhome buyers who bought brand new motor homes, only to have them start falling apart and the companies often did nothing to take care of the problems, and made them wait many months for solving.  Part was due to the covid time, when the manufacture of motor homes became shoddy workmanship. Brand new vehicles falling apart. So if you spend a little time watching her videos,  it may save you a lot of money and several things to consider.  Don't watch just this one, there are many more that may have information you are looking for.  I think her channel is called @LizAmazing.

Nancy, in regard to Jim's future as a vagabond traveler, I have nothing to compare it with. But I just watched the link you posted and it is amazing. It covers things I would never have considered. I am pretty much an inert kind of person, so life on the road is not on my bucket list. Besides, I could never afford it. Yet, if I could, this video would be enormously helpful. Who knows? It may influence Jim's future. We'll see if he can park at Miller Park and still make it to the mini-reunion. That would be nice.

And...HAPPY BIRTHDAY RICH!!!

Mel--Travelling/motor home may not be a priority, but many Military bases have & maintain camping parks for veterans--free or almost free.  Many also modern facilities(hotels).  In Alabama, for example, not only do bases have camping facilities, but the State Parks have free or almost free camping for veterans--up to 30 days at a time.  Other states may also provide that benefit.

We have lost another of our classmates. Don Brown passed away May 4. Unfortuantely I have not been able to get this posted until this late date and a memorial service is set for 4:00 to 5:00 today at Beck Memorial Home in Bloomington. His obituary will be posted in the In Memory section.

He probably won't see this, but I want to wish a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to John Nolte. He is and always has been a special part of Raiders64. It would be a gift if he chimed in here.
