David Long

As tomorrow, April 18th is the deadline for filing taxes, I thought I'd toss in a couple of quotes from Will Rogers on the subject.

The 1st one comes from 1932:

“The crime of taxation is not in the taking it, it’s in the way that it’s spent.”

The 2nd comes from 1924:

“I see by the papers that they are going to do away with all the nuisance taxes. That means that a man can get a marriage license for nothing.”

May your chuckles and refunds be plentiful!

Thought for the day in lieu of the 'thought for the day':

I propose A Daily Challenge: for those that are up to it....

You may have heard of the game WORDLE or you may already be playing the game .

Playing Wordle is free and easy—you just click through to the website (see below) and enter your first guess. Each guess must be five letters long and must be an English word. Once you type in your guess and hit enter, the letters will flip and any correct letters in the correct position within the word will turn green, while any correct letters not in the correct position will turn yellow—that is also the key to understanding the emojis you may have seen on social media.

Each player, each day, gets only six guesses to reveal the mystery word. Some players start with a strategic first word like SOARE or ARISE to confirm or strike common letters and vowels, while others just pick a new random word to begin each game.  My usual starting word is AUDIO (just an FYI).

Once you complete the game, you are provided the opportunity to SHARE your results - below are my results for today, April 18th.

Wordle 668 4/6

⬜⬜🟨🟨⬜
⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩
⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Any RAIDERS up for a daily challenge?

Wishing you all a WORDLEFUL Day!

Ray, I looked forward to taking Industrial Arts and then the school changed and girls couldn't take the class.  I did learn some things from my wonderful dad.  I always liked putting things together or fixing something.
But I sure didn't like cooking or sewing.

Have a great day and I may need a few prayers.  I'm having an MRI because my doctor wants to make sure my cancer hasn't metastasized.

Suzi

Suzi, Prayers for a positive outcome.  You would be amazed at the number of women in Industry.

The MRI shows I have a non cancer tumor on my brain (8x5) mm.

I have to go to the cancer center tomorrow and I have to contact my neurologist to see him as soon as possible.  I'm lucky to have a great family doctor.  I need more prayers for me and my son.  He works for unit 5 school district.  He was checking the leaks at North Point school...when he started to come down the ladder his foot slipped and he fell two stories and landed on concrete.  He was very lucky that he didn't injure his head or back.

Suzi, good news that the tumor is non-cancerous, but I'm sure any tumor is worrisome.  I pray for you and your Doctors for the decisions they make regarding treatment.   Also, I'll pray for your Son.

For those interested, Mary Selk's memorial will be May 6th at 2:00 at Second Pres Church.

So Sad to see that Tim Schmidt has passed away. We met each other when my family moved to a house on Mazefield Avenue when I was in the 6th grade. Tim and his family live across the street and we became close friends thru our high school years. We were the same age but I was one year ahead in school. Every summer we hiked, camped in his back yard, climbed that big tree next next to Eureka Williams and sitting high in the branches, contemplating what would become of us in our futures. We always played sports together...football...from the Golden Gridders to BHS, basketball and especially baseball from the Legion 10:30 league at Oakland School until our final year with the Bloomington Legion Varsity...winning the Illinois State Championship and finishing 2nd in the Midwest Regionals in 1964. We lost touch soon after as Tim went away to college at Millikin and I went to ISU. I only saw Tim one more time...his parents had retired and lived around the corner from me on Hillside Lane in Bloomington...and I saw him when he was there after his Dad had passed away sometime in the late 70's or early 80's. Over the years I tried several times to get in touch with him...but we could never connect. A lot of my good/fun memories...especially sports...include Tim...from Oakland School, Washington Junior High, Bloomington High and of course American Legion Baseball. His mom and dad were wonderful people as well.

Rest in Peace Old Friend.

I was sorry to hear about Tim.  I didn't know him very well but it sounds like he was a good guy.  RIP Tim.

First I want to thank everyone for the prayers for my son and myself.  Jeff says he's doing better and I'm going great!  But he still can't walk because he can't put weight on his foot.  He's not able to work and that depresses him because he hates sitting around.  His job requires him to go to all the schools in unit 5 district when there's a maintenance problem...that's how he got hurt.  He's 56 years old and I can't make him lesson.  Not because of his age but because he's a man.  Haha!!

I'm sorry for mentioning my health problems but I still dream of the days when I could go dancing.  I love to dance and I've enjoyed dancing since I was a little girl.  I know I'm very lucky to have a wonderful family, friends and classmates, that I really cherish.  You've all been really helpful and I appreciate all your prayers.

Love you all

Suzi

It's funny the things we remember about each other at our time at BHS.  So sorry to hear of the passing of Tim Schmidt.  I remember his blonde flat top, his mischievous grin and how he would tug on my hair in Latin class since he sat behind me, and that his name in that class was Rufus🥰

I don't know if it was noted, but Steve Huffman passed away on January 12, 2020.  You can read his obituary on Northshorefuneral.com

David, I am taking your bait and offering a real easy target to start with:

Wordle 673 5/6

🟨🟨🟨⬛⬛
🟩🟩🟨🟩⬛

This makes me quite mad,  %#!*!

Elaine and I play this almost daily with our daughter Jessica and her husband, Arno (Arnaud).  They live in Luxembourg and we communicate via whatsapp and maybe two or three video calls a week.

When we play we often leave a clue .... so the longer you wait to post, the better shot you have.  Not that I use that as a strategy.  Honest.

If I were to leave a clue for this one, it might be:  this pisses me off!

One other little thing.  On February 8, closing in on my 77th birthday, I became a grandfather for the first time.  Elaine and I had just arrived in Luxembourg the 7th and just past midnight the little fella decided it was time.

Meet Charlie Jostan Aymes Jetton.

He will have dual French and American citizenship.

Habic:  Thank you for the information on Tim Schmidt!  We don't hear enough from you any more.

Suzi:  Glad you're doing better.  You aren't the only one who loves to dance.   I still do in the kitchen when I play my music while cooking.  My kids laugh at me and start dancing too!

Sue:  Thank you for the information on Huffman.

Jetton:  Congratulations on your grandson!  Here's praying you can enjoy him as much as possible.

Blessings to you all!

Linda

Steve, OMG,  what a cute baby boy!  He is precious. Just goes to show it's never too late.  So happy for you that you could go to see him and your family.    Thanks for sharing..

Suzi, hopefully, your Son will heal fast.  A lot of men aren't good at sitting around when they should be doing something.  If he went to BHS, I wonder if he knows my youngest Son, David Singletary?  He is 56- and will be 57 on May 22. He was in the class of '84.  Keep dancing in your head.  I can't sing anymore, but I still sing, in my head.

Dave and Steve,

I don't know how to post the NY Times Wordle results the way you have, but I got #673 today on the fourth round. I have several friends who are always playing it. But, since Dave posted the challenge I've done it every day since and am 5 out of 5, with scores of two threes, two fours, and one six. I didn't do it on Friday. So my continutity was broken. Anyone else doing this? It is a brain buster. You have to be bored or retired to spend your time on such things, However, I confess that almost everyday I do the Sudoku, crossword and Jumble puzzles in the Sun-Times and Tribune over coffee and orange juice. My only excuse is it that it helps me wake up and get to the next stage of the day before opening emails. OMG, no one ever told us about this in high school.

One of my neighbors who has taught 2nd grade and recenty retired said that the one thing she loves most is that she can go pee whenever she wants to. I never thought of that when in class with Mrs. Warren in 2nd grade. In fact, I can't remember any teacher from K-12 ever taking a bathroom break. Ain't that weird?

Suzi, I am so glad you and your son are doing better. Since my daughter's hit and run accident, she is now walking with a boot and recovering beautifully. Like others have said, I am one of those stubborn males who resents being sequestered.

AND, Steve...WELCOME TO THE GRANDPA CLUB. It is one of the most rewarding things in life.
