Y'all are being much kinder than the guys I hung out with back in Kansas - They've been asking if I had intercourse with the hotel manager or took advantage of the chambermaid?

Today's advice comes from Richard Cumberland, a 16th century British Bishop and Philosopher:

It's Better to Wear Out than to Rust Out.

My heartfelt sympathy to Jim and his family at the loss of Allida.

What can one say when someone you have known for 71 years passes? Allida was a member of the Oakland School kindergarten class in 1951-52 that included Betsy Ahlenius, Chuck Massie, Cathy Quiett and Bob Bower all of whom we have sadly now lost. It was always a treat to get time with Allida when she and Jim would join us at the mini-reunions. They were the last to leave at our last meeting in December. Allida was always so happy to connect with her old friends at these events. She will be deeply missed.

This winter has flown by and I have been extremely negligent regarding participation in the class website. Judy and I made what has become our annual winter excursion to the middle Florida Keys and I somehow could never seem to get myself to post anything on the website. The most regrettable of my negligence was the failure to update the IN MEMORY section on the website at the loss of Cheri Wombacher Welch whom was also at Oakland School from about fourth grade. This failure will be corrected in the next few minutes. These losses hit pretty hard when you gradually lose people you grew up with. It feels as if a little bit of you dies with each one of them. Memories of them and our experiences in our youth through our school years are so vivid in my mind. These loses make this website and our reunions all the more special in maintaining friendships with those we knew in those impressionable years.

It seems that my typing got ahead of me and I missed the i and the m in Altimus.  So sorry!

For those who care about such things, it is Altemus. Any time you make a typo, you can always go back and edit your original message without adding an additional post. Just trying to help. The rest of us understand, because we all make mistakes.

Jim,

My heart goes out to you and your family.  The only interaction I had with Allida was in Homeroom.  Our paths simply did not cross.  I can't imagine what it would be like without my wife of 56 years.  Bless you.

Today's Thought comes from a quote by Walter Hagen.

Those of us that follow professional golf know that Hagen was a golf pro and was exceptionally good in the first have of the 20th century, especially in the early 1960's.  He won 11 major tournaments and is currently third behind Nicklaus and Woods in major titles.  He died six months after I returned from Nam.  During an interview he said something that has stuck with me:

You're here only for a short visit.  Don't hurry and don't worry and be sure to smell the flowers along the way.

David:

Love the quote.  I smelled the roses and was allergic to them!  Seriously!

So sorry to hear about Allida.  Like Marv I'd known her since kindergarten. And she lived down the street from me on Jackson. Always a sweet person.

I found something in a book I have that I'd like to share.  It's from a conversation a long time ago:

If you're going to plagiarize, go way back.

This is advice given to Senator Joseph Biden from Senator Barry Goldwater

Happy April Fool's Day

Today's witticism comes from Sydney Biddle Burrows, you may remember her as the "Mayflower Madam", but in this day of modern telecommunications is even more true:

Never say anything on the phone that you wouldn't want your mother to hear at your trial.

Today, April 2nd, I have been thinking about the war in Ukraine.  There's a quote from JFK that came to mind:

Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind.

Thought for today - Monday, April 3rd....

Never cry over spilt milk - It could have been whiskey!

Tuesday, April 4th - TAX DAY is almost upon us and I've only completed 95% of our return.   Awaiting some numbers from Merrill Lynch to finalize the Kansas, Illinois, and Federal.

Today's Quote is from Albert Einstein, a pretty smart guy....

There are only two ways to live your life.  One is as though nothing is a miracle.  The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Quote for Wednesday, April 5, is from Lou Holtz - if we want to take advice from a Football Coach:

You never get ahead of anyone as long as you try to get even with him.

It's a beautiful, sunny day in Chicago!  As an fyi, we live in the traffic pattern for O'Hare.  I love hearing the planes overhead as they are in their landing approach.  It's so much better than the traffic noise we used to have in Kansas.

We have 2 garage parking spaces that are part of our condo ownership.  They are, however, not really wide enough to fit two mid-size cars.  Dorothy drives a Ford Fusion Hybrid, and until yesterday, I drove a Volvo XC60 SUV.  I now drive a Mini CooperS Countryman.  That gives me about 6 more inches on each side to fit in the parking spaces.

The things we have to give up, right: frownlaugh!  The Mini is turbocharged and is really an "old man's sports car".

Thought for today is from Gandhi.

There is more to life than increasing its speed.

Linda,

Ditto and roger that. Dave's daily quips are a lot of fun and I especially enjoyd the one about spilled milk. When he started us off on sharing photographs a couple of years ago, it opened up a can of worms that has been unprecedented on Raiders64. It would be fun to pile on and add to his latest use of favorite quotes. Anyone else want to play?

Zen parable: It's your own lantern, don't poke holes in it.

Mel:

Thank you for the idea.  I probably won't fit into that slot.  My favorite quotes are from Mark Twain and Will Rogers.  I appreciate their simplicity.
