I'm chiming in to verify that the story Marv told is absolutely true. Anyone else willing to share such tales of their family history? Out-laws might be the subject of another day's theme, with Dave's approval of course.

Also, I would be remiss if I didn't tell Sandy how much I enjoyed her photos of Bob, Connie and Garth. I had contact with Bob for many years after high school. And without getting sentimental, it is an absolute highlight of our mini-reunions that Garth Golden has been joining us. What a beautiful character. I could say the same for all of you. You are all beautiful characters.

No Clouds

In COLOR

Socked in In The Fog

Wether or Not - but necessary

Dave - Glad to see the Bears may have an undefeated seaon coming with thier new kicker knowing he is famous for .99 yard field goals in perfect weather. That is assuming there will be a season. (Note the decimal point)

I'm not sure of the range "weather" covers but I would consider it to include the result of weather events. I am going to get a little bit carried away on this but wanted to share some of my favorite photos. So first is the great flood of 2013 at my house at Heritage Lake near Mackinaw, IL.

The result of a recent snow on top of ice followed by a 50° day at Heritage Lake. It was magical.

Ice forming on a small stream at Heritage Lake.

"Thunder" discovering snow for the first time.

Canada geese landing or more appropriately sliding in on fresh ice at Heritage Lake in 2013.

Near the west end of the library at IWU in 2013.

Country sky near Mackinaw, IL in 2013.

Fresh snow fall at IWU campus gate in 2103.

Denali can be partially seen.  It is usually totally socked in.

I have two.  One is a rainbow off of Cortes Island in British Columbia, and the second is the stairs going down to our back yard after a snow.  We don't get snow that often in Seattle.

Not sure if Marv was doing foul weather or fowl weather, which ever, Heritage Lake has plenty of both.

I'm going for two servings today. This is the first. On January 26, 1967 Chicago had its all time record snowfall. I took these the next day when the city came to a complete halt.

In front of my apartment on Oakdale. Cars were buried so deep that only their radio antennas were visible.

Sheridan Road at Briar St.

Lake Shore Drive where cars were abandoned for several days.

Buses were left with their doors open and engines running so stranded peope could stay warm.

The aftermath, an open door of a dead bus.

Dirk Howard, one of our website guests as a former BHS student, sent a request to share a message regarding making face masks. While I am reluctant to take responsibility for recommending or suggesting something like this I think it is worth making available for you to decide if you think it is helpful and useful. I cannot say how effective it might be. I am also attaching a link to a US Surgeon General's video on a simple way to make a face mask. We are in the Florida Keys and it is now mandatory to wear a face mask in any store you enter. Hopefully you will find this helpful.

US Surgeon General Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPx1yqvJgf4&feature=youtu.be

Dirk Howard Message (I verified the link below is valid):

I have come up with a face mask that only takes about 5 minutes to make. It is made from the sleeves of a t-shirt. Just cut the sleeves off, pull down over your head until the nose and mouth are covered. Wear it once and wash it for reuse. Make several for each person. Snug Fit! Pictures at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/e0dl55e986p0kho/AABz1DarV_8R4G3Me3YIiuSGa?dl=0 Maybe you can organize a group to make and pass out the masks or give out printed instructions. Size of the masks would be determined by the size if the shirt. Paper masks are for one use only, easy to tear, and most offer no protection from the sides where they do not seal well. There are many people that cannot find masks or afford them. Many elderly with allergies and respiratory issues that need masks. You can use this information the public and other organizations at your discretion.

Some great offerings on the forum! Here's one of our streets after a snowfall: White Place.

One more. Does anyone remember the blizzard of 1978? This is my house after the howling winds and driving snow finally stopped. Two months later a lot of this same snow was still on the ground!

Hi Everyone,

Late getting on this morning.  Here are some suggestions from Marv a few days ago:

  • People of special character, dress, interest,  etc.
  • Free style day - anything goes
  • Cutest pic
  • Funniest pic
  • Favorite pic
  • Best memory with background story
  • Favorite pic of children or grandchildren
  • Favorite politician pic (just kidding)
  • Your most creative pic
  • Your happy place pic

Marv - I think it only appropriate that you Snowbirds select today's theme - Judy, chime in here.

Sorry, I thought I had posted this but I guess I slipped up. Mel had suggested FUNNY ME as the next theme so lets go with that for today. For tomorrow, Saturdy, lets do PETS as suggestd by several of you.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Dave, a couple of days ago I suggested FUNNY ME or SILLY ME for today. Photo(s) of yourself in a humorous, awkward or embarrassing moment, costume or place as an adult (not as a child, but childish is OK). Explanatory captions are encouraged.

Do you want to go with that today? Would love to have some other folks take turns making suggestions. You're the band leader, so we will await your decision.

For now, I'll go with SILLY ME stuff anyway. Hoping you all get a good laugh at my expense. cheeky

"Marv's Assistant Tree Trimmer"  2016 or so. We were cutting a 60 foot limb off Judy's maple tree to keep it from crushing her house. I got a little tangled in the rope. As a result of our success, Max became our manager and we started a tree trimming business. So far we haven't had a single customer. Go figure!!!

Making fish faces with my granddaughter. 2018

Me when I was shorter. A friend visiting from Germany shot this in South Haven, Michigan. 1997

"Ears of Corn" 2017 My cousin took this near Danvers.

1991 at Elizabeth Stein's 85th birthday party in Chicago.

1980 Halloween party with my now ex-wife. She was Elvira and I was Ming the Merciless.

1973 Palo Duro Canyon, Texas with my first wife. This is not a costume, I dressed this way every day. Carried blank canvases across the country and stopped at numerous places to paint the landscape. Once a hippie, always a hippie.

This was taken in front of a cigar store in Boston. I had a little run-in with one of the locals (No - that is not Mel on the right). He outlasted me.

Silly Me works great - will have to see what's out there.  Thanks for the great suggestions!  Pet's works for tomorrow!

Being Kissed by an Elephant - luckily with No Tongue

Not Quite a Hickie

Playing Golf in the Pouring Rain at Koolau Golf Course in Hawaii - parred the #1 handicap hole - slope rating for the course was 153 - at the time the toughest course in the United States. Went through 5 gloves, lost 5 balls and barely broke 90 and had a blast.

While it wasn't funny at the time, looking back on it was pretty funny and provided me with  some of the easiest duty I had in Nam.  I was bitten by a rat and had to have a series of rabies shots - they gave the shots in the abdomen.  I was 5' 8" and weighed 127 lbs - not much fat to stick the needle in - that body is now trapped inside a lot of Big Macs, fries and shakes.

A couple years ago we were taking pictures with the grandkids.  They always want to do something goofy, so we took this first so we could take a more "serious" photo.  Yeah, good luck with that!

Here are two.  One was taken in Iceland.  They have these troll statues here and there.  The second is in San Francisco at a weekly outdoor event called "Off the Grid".  Food trucks, adult beverages and live music at Ft. Mason.  I was visiting my daughter at the time.  It was cold, hence the down vest.

This is Ralph, our Boxer, in 1981 and his Daughter, JC.  She was born in Canada, when we were living there.  The Mom was all white, but all the puppies had Ralph's coloring.  This is the first time they were together.  He lived to almost 15 and she lived to almost 16, which is old for a Boxer.  She got her name because of the "J" on her nose.   The top picture is of them when they were older.

I also had to post a picture of my current baby,  Maggie.  She will be 13 in June and she is a very good girl, most of the time. She is a chocolate dapple minature Dachshund.

Today's theme is PETS!  I don't have pictures of many of my pets (our pets) but remember them all:

Grade School - Blackie, a mutt

Middle School - Tina, a chihuahua

High School - Tina died and Shorty got Snowball, a Great Pyerenes Mountain Dog

Vietnam - Dog - a stray that lived with me at our base camp

1971 - Ginger - an English Setter, stayed with my ex as I was travelling 5 -6 nights per week

1981 - Sadie - an Australian Shepherd, stayed with my brother-in-law while we took a trip and was killed by a car

1986 - Foxy - a Pomeranian, a rescue dog that died on the 1st night we had him - heart worms

1986 - Puudle - a Cockapoo, a rescue dog that went into an epileptic seizure and didn't recover

1989 - Bennington - a Yorkie, a rescue dog from 2 old ladies that couldn't care for him, instead of bathing, they sprayed him with some awful smelling perfume

1990 - Dixie - an Australian Shepherd and the smartest dog of the bunch, but a walking fur ball

2008 - Phoebe Magee - a Labradoodle, smart, stubborn, and a real treat hound.  She's trained to pick up underwear from the bathroom and carry them into the laundry room

Others - Isis - a Lab Border Collie mix, our daughter Erin's rescue that we kept everyday when she was teaching or on trips

Teddy - a Chow mixed breed, our daughter Chloe's rescue that only loved and would be around 4 people - Chloe & Wyatt, Dorothy and me.  He would literally try to attack anyone that he thought was a threat to either of us.  Had to be put down after attacking Erin (ER visit with stitches) and Chloe's neighbor - personal injury attorney, (ER visit with stitches)

DOG - 1968

Bennington

Dixie

Phoebe Magee

Phoebe - come on Dad, let's stay out and play some more...

Isis - Erin was walking her and a person she met asked her name, and when she said Isis the person said "oh, that's unfortunate"

Teddy - looks can be deceiving, very affectionate to the four people he loved but....

Terri - When your car was abandonded in 1967 what did you do? Did you have to walk far, have a place to go or stay? How long did it take to get your car back? Must have been a terrible experience.

Dave I just took the liberty of deleting your first post which was a duplicate. I left the second one assuming it was the latest and greatest. Let me know if I messed up. Fantastic list of humane contributions to the dog world. Are you sure that wasn't a hickey? That looked like a pretty serious smootch. Hopefully Dorothy was not jealous. BTW, that photo of her with the dog is proof that she has not aged at all.

Sandy - Nice pet family. Glad you have had them to bring you the happiness they have obviously provided.

Apparently only Wendy, Max, Dave, Mel and I were brave enough to show our true inner selves through the FUNNY ME theme. Would love to have seen how funny others can be when they become free spirits.

I do not have any pets and have no pictures of past pets, but will share photos of other peoples pets I have encountered whose personalities I had to capture.
