55th Class Reunion
For those that missed the reunion festivities we enjoyed three very special gatherings. In attendance Friday at Cheeks were 44 happy faces. It was great to have classmates Sue McGinnis Payne and Jim Ogan join us since it was not known that they were coming. Long distance attendees were Terri Baxter Whirrett, Barry Ehrman, Rod Hayes, Ed Buis, Jim and Allida Frisch Altemus, Sue Leben Ochs, Dave Long and Judy Walker.
The reunion planning committee did a terrific job of organizing a reception table, setting up memorial and memorabilia displays, decorating with beautiful flowers, putting up signs, presenting a slide show, providing 60's music, and much more. Saturday at BCC was even more exciting than Friday with 62 in attendance including 43 classmates and special guest, teacher Mrs Carla Smith. Mrs Smith gave a brief speach about how special our class was to her and how she believes she learned more from us than we did from her. A special treat, in large part due to the encouragement of John Brown and Dave Long, was the appearance of Wayne Kearney and Bill Walton as first time attendees. To quote Dave Long, "It was like the 55 years just melted away".
Following a nice hors d'oeurvre arrangement, a welcome greeting and a few announcements, a buffet dinner was served that included salads, chicken picatta, pasta primavera, salmon, veggies and luscious cake. Mid-evening Ron Bess honored us with a very special remembrance of his life growing up in Bloomington including memories of his father, Coach Bess. It was a very heartfelt talk that added greatly to the beauty of the entire evening. To many of us Ron and Coach Bess were examples of excellence growing up and Ron wanted the class to know how special our class was to him and the Bess family.
Things wound down relatively early for us "old folks" and the committee cleanup was finished at 10:30pm. I assume that was necessary for getting to an early brunch at 10:00am. At our age we do need our rest. Brunch resulted in 21 attendees plus the proxy "Max" sent in his absence. Flowers from Saturday were used again at Michael's and a hearty selection of food filled our bellies as we completed the final stage of our 55th reunion. It was a magical weekend.
Following the brunch Madelon H., Judy W., Mel, Mary G. and I delivered the remaining flower arrangements to five very special recipients related to our class. Delivery was to Deb Pierce (Jim's wife), Kathy Crabtree (Charlie's wife), Cheri Wombacher Welch, Mary Selk (now 98 and doing well), and Jean Holcomb (4th grade teacher of many of our classmates).
