Marvin Theobald

At our age we take a lot of abuse. Just look at what my kids did to me last night when I told them,

“I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug.”

They got up, unplugged my computer and threw out my beer!!

When it comes to you, my fellow classmates, I hate it when I see an old person and realize we went to high school together.

I am not a cranky old man, just one trying to maintain and share my sense of humor. Hope this gives you a good laugh to brighten your day.

Hope to see all of you at the Mini-Reunion Aug 10.

Marvin, I try to splash a little wit when I post on this site, but YOU are the champion! I love to read your posts. Age really is a state of mind. I'll, (by God's grace) soon hit the 7-1 mark and I still love to act like a teenager. I think that you may have missed your calling. The late, great, Erma Bombeck would be proud of your humor. Please, don't ever stop! (BTW, don't spill beer on your keyboard. It screws it up and then you have to clean it.)

Guys:  You're all correct!

We all age at different rates, slightly!  Some are more active mentally and physically.  Without notice, we all have our DUE DATEs as we age.  We lost some of our friends and classmates in their teens, 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's...........and welcome to the 70's!!!!

With all of our experiences that humans go through in life, it is a wonder that anyone lives to old age.......but here we are!!!!  If life is a gift, I'm going to enjoy it!

I work all of the puzzles in my morning paper every day, exercise for 30-40 minutes early morning and after work, am still inquisitive and often interact with friends by recapitulating something I found humorous.  However, I also experience friends who are retired and stay in their home like hermits, just waiting to die.   I choose to live until I die instead of waiting for the moment to arrive.

I believe that actively interacting with others is so important for all human beings and very healthy.

But, I'm wondering how limited conversational interaction will affect future generations that are always on their phone.  Will abbreviations over-run decent spelling or grammar?

We see people in line to pay at the grocery store, bank, pharmacy, etc., getting bored and doing something on their phone to occupy their time of boredom.  Some are so rude that when they shop, they are on the phone talking out loud and can sometimes become 'noise pollution'.   They don't ask what they need to pick up and get off of the phone, but, they tell where they are and that they are bored so they decided to call their respondent.

Our generation learned what to do when we were bored.  But, we also learned how to handle ourselves in public by being aware of others..  I find it very sad when I see someone of our age, reverting to 'what's hip today', in order to feel like they fit in.  I found that they can be just as rude as others on their darn phones!

Okay..........off of my soap box!

Linda

Linda, I agree with you, 100%. One of the things that I recognize in generations after ours, is that there is NO parenting. Without parenting there is no discipline. There is no teaching of manners or respect. I see it everyday. What is this "time-out"? When did we start "giving" to our children and forget about "earning"? The results, are what our children and grandchildren have become. Now they must raise their children.

We have to remember that no one is guarranteed tomorrow and yesterday is history. (I wish that I had thought of that, but it was inserted at the end of every sermon given by Pastor Dr. Bert Lancaster, of Wesley Methosist Church, here in Blooington. RIP.)

Not on a soap box.......I'm just aware of all of my mistakes.

Below are a few nostalgic pictures only we Baby Boomers can relate to. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did. They bring back some great memories. As silly as it may my seem my favorite is the TV test pattern. I remember so well watching TV to the end of the broadcast day and this coming on after the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. When was the last time you heard the Star Spangle Banner played with the American flag waving on the screen?

I am really disappointed in you guys. I am wearing my Raiders hat and shirt to the Mini-Reunion. What is with this Cubs - Cardinals stuff? We are Raiders till death do us part and beyond. OK, I guess there may be room for a little extra curricular enthusiasm since the Cubs and Cardinals are not really Raider opponents. But we are still one as die hard Raiders. In all of the years since HS I have never been more of a sports fan than at BHS. Those football and basketball games are some of my best memories of our school days. I remember being totally devastated on the rare occasions that we lost a football game. And don't forget the fun of building homecomig floats. Again, great memories.

Very nostalgic, indeed! I like the ice cube trays and have unsettling memories of damp fingers sticking to the metal when I tried to pry one open. A minor version of the infamous 'triple-dog-dare tongue to flagpole' taunt in 'A Christmas Story.'

Back in the late 1950's during the weekly Mickey Mouse Club cartoon specials, an X rated moving started by mistake. It was mis-packaged and we got to see about 2 minutes. Does anyone but me remember this? They cut off the movie and apologized for it and showed us the weekend feature instead.

Milan, I wasn't there, but rumors of it were all over the place. The projectionist for the theater was a local and, to some, a fairly well known pornographer. Apparently the "adult" film was left on the projector from a private screening the previous night and ended up being shown to the "kiddies" by accident. You might want to check with Milner Library's Rare Collections Dept. They not only know who the pornographer was, they have a substantial archive of his private film and photos which may be seen upon special request. You are one of few people I've ever heard say they were actually there, which puts you in pretty rare company. If that happened today, you'd have a pretty good law suit on your hands. LOL

There were a lot of kids there that day. I think I was with Garen Barekman and Dan Woodard.

Singers from the Class of 1964, Mary Selk is planning a concert for September 30, 2017 at Westminster Village. We rehearse on Thursday and Friday before the concert at 7PM. Then again at 1:30 on concert Saturday before our performance. This may be the last concert Mary plans. I believe Mary is 96 years old now. And that is "not" why it may be her last. She tried to schedule it with a BHS Class 50th Reunion and the Class of 1967 was her last year in the classroom. If you can make it, please let me know so Mary can plan accordingly

Crawled out of my cave to catch up with the famed Raiders of '64.

Suzi, I will be there on Aug 10, so don't forget the salt & pepper shakers!  Ironically, I knocked my salt shaker off the counter while making breakfast the other day.  A mess of glass and salt on the floor.  I went ahead and dug deep into my pocket for three bucks and got another set, since I plan to put yours in the locked cabinent with the rest of my fine art collection.  Or maybe because who knows what's been in 'em over the course of six or seven decades.

Saw Clayton James this morning while walking in Ewing Park (Bloomington's garden spot in my humble opinion).  I let him know about Aug 10 and he said he'd be there.  If anybody is in contact with him, might be good to give him a nudge.

Also, here's a nudge for one of the frequent and affable posters on this forum who we never get to see in real life.  He or she knows who I'm talkin' about.

Look forward to seeing everybody in about a week.

Allida Frisch (Altemus)

Mary and Mel Happy Happy Birthday! Hard to believe we have known each other since we were 4&5 years old when we met in kindergarten. Time flies! Hope you enjoy your special day. Hope to see you both at the mini reunion on the 10th.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Allida, this sounds promising. I'll be thrilled if you and Jim are at the mini-reunion. Thanks for the b'day wishes. Yeah, kindergarten was the beginning of all our failures and successes. It's amazing that we're still in touch. Love you guys.

Thanks for the birthday wishes Allida. It is hard to comprehend that it has been 66 years since our kindergarten days at Oakland School. Each of our HS classmates have their memories of kindergarten and who they were with. I am realizing what a small group of people are in that category. The only others I can think of besides Allida, Mel and I that were in that kindergarten class clear throught HS and are still living are Julie Hart, Chuck Jenkins, Mike Maurer and Holly Rust. Those that were there with us through those years and are now gone but not forgotten are Betsy Ahlenius, Bob Bower, Janice Kerchefaut, Chuck Massie and Cathy Quiett. If my memory is less than accurate I am sure you and Mel will straighten me out.

It would be fun and interesting to know how many of our HS classmates were together all the way from Kindergarten. That is not in any way mean't to minimize the friendship of others that joined our class after Kindergarten. Mel and I actualy started Kindergarten at Sheridan School with Jim Pierce and Bill Walton for the first few weeks before moving and transferring to Oakland. It would be fun to know who else was in that Kindergarten class at Sheridan.

I can only think of one person that I went with kindergarten through college... that was Ron Gibson.  Might be others but I can't recall kindergarten all that well anymore. Should have taken those naps on the rug when I had the chance!

Michael (Mike) Franks

That's a shame Max. If you could have remembered 10 other classmates, you could have won the grand prize.

An ice cold botle of New Glarus, Spotted Cow!

Oh, well. I have trouble remembering the pin numbers and passwords that are required, just to get through the day. What happened to the simple life?

08/04/17 04:07 PM #6248

Terry (Max) Maxwell

OK Mike...

I felt the sting from the slap of your glove so I decided to take your challenge.  I sat down this afternoon and listed all of the kids I remember going to grade school at Lincoln School with and have come up with 26 so far... and that is going from memory only, which ain't all that sharp anymore.  Now I'm not sure if I went to kindergarten with all of them because some probably came after that.  And I know that some left before high school.  What I said in my last post was I only know of one person that I went from Kindergarten through college with.  I went with most of them through high school.

I'm sure that when we got our pictures taken at the beginning of each school year, there was probably also a class picture taken as well.  But I never kept any of that stuff.  They only pictures I have are the 3 year books from high school... nothing else.  And I just located them recently in a box of "stuff".  They had been missing for over 30 years.  When I looked in them a couple months ago, I realized that none of us have really changed in the past 50 years. Amazing!

BTW... I am very familiar with Spotted Cow.  I only live about 1 hour and 15 minutes from New Glarus.  We have it on tap everywhere up here.  So here's my plan:  I will buy you a Spotted Cow at Gill Street next Thursday night and we will go over the list that I have and you can add to it or subtract from it if you think I don't know what I'm talking about.  That's my slap of the glove back at you.  Be there!  No excuses.

Max
