Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Thank you Max and Marv for drawing attention to my exhibit. Max, it was a very special treat having you at the reception, but it isn't modesty that keeps me from posting my work here, it is the dread of self-promotion. Everyone of us has reason to celebrate our accomplishments. This photo of my granddaughter at the show is my favorite. If anyone is interested, I'm attaching the announcement. The exhibit is scheduled to run through the end of July but will likely be extended through August. Hope some of you have a chance to see it if you are coming through Chicago for the August 10 mini-reunion.

Suzi - I think you managed to trip Linda up on her birthday secret. It must be pretty close to June 17 based on her response.

Linda - Happy Birthday and best wishes just in case Suzi stumbled onto your secret.

Marv, me thinks you're right about Linda.  I wish everyone would put their birthday date in their profile.  After all we are all around 70 to 71.  Maybe 72.  It would sure help me.

I don't think the Dog n Suds was established on Morrisey Ave. in 1954 1956.  I might wrong, but there was a rootbeer stand on E. Oakland just west of Bunn St.  I think it is a liquor store now or was at one time.

Thanks Boo. All the work in the show is from the 1970s and are oil on linen. The largest is 6.5 by 8 feet. "Nude with Yellow Towel" in the photo with Max, Marv and Judy is 6 by 6 feet. All this work, including my exhibition photogrphs, can be seen on my website at: theobaldart.com. Hope no one is offended by the nude, it just kind of comes with the territory for artists. I'll be having another exhibit "Artist's Portrait Series" at Purdue University in Westville, IN beginning in late July.

And yes, that smile always happens when I'm with Dalia. She's awesome.

Dave, I would love it if you make it to Chicago. Please let me know and I'll go to the exhibit with you. Congratulations on the new grandson.

Wow! I must have led one hell of a sheltered life. I don't remember any of those slop chute's. Come to think of it, I'm still pretty sheltered! I'm still waiting for my first date......Someday, someone will ask me out, but they'd better hurry before I'm sent to the glue factory. Even the neighbor's dog barks at me.

Love reading all the posts. Dog N Suds was one of my favorite places for that kind of food. Don't remember Jay's. But my all time favorite was Casella's Italian restaurant. Loved their pizza and salad. Anybody else remember? Hope I spelled the name right.

Casellas Pizza Palace was on South Main Street.  I remember it well.  It was on my paper route and in winter when it was real cold, I would stop under their kitchen vent that blew hot air down. It would warm me up and the smell was awesome!  Their pizza was really good, too.  Had forgotten about that place... thanks for the memory Allida.

Casellas was probably for most of us the first place we had pizza. It is my understanding that Beningo's inherited Casellas pizza recipies and still made "Casellas pizza" until a few months ago when they closed. The memories of Casellas from our HS days is so special. It was a great place to go on a date. Some of us went there after the prom. Great memories.

Dear Mike F (Guys Dear Abbey alternative) - I have a serious question that I figure only an expert like you on such matters is qualified to answer. One of our classmates (Judy) is in the Ozarks shopping today, same as yesterday. In a text exchange yesterday I asked if the shopping was for entertainment or might it be considered a sport (My expertise is obviously not in understanding women). In subsequent conversation, on the premise that it might be a sport, l asked about the rules and who is determined to be the winner. Is it the one who finds the best bargain or the one who spends the most money or the one who comes back with the most treasures or the one with the least money left or the one who ends the day the happiest or the most wornout? Is there a rule book anywhere on this? Please help me understand how this works!

Disclaimer: This is totally for fun converstaion and is not intended to be construed negatively or offensively in any way.

Marv:

Shopping has NO competition.  We shop until the interest if fulfilled for the day OR after we have been able to buy what we needed to fulfill a list.

Some women enjoy looking around stores on top of shopping!

Personally..........I'm not a looker.  Get in, find what I'm looking for, then leave as fast as I can go!

Hope this helps!

Linda

Some say the story about Casella's recipe being at Benningo's is an urban myth. Here was Jake Casella in front of Casella's 507 South Main in Normal. I don't remember that at all. 4-27-1958

Milan,

Thanks for clearing up this rootbeer mix-up.  Thanks for all the research.  I will concede to your findings.  I knew there a suds stand there on Oakland Ave.  The ad for Jays confirmed it.  Now thinking my mind has not completely left me.

I do remember Casellas on S. Main in Bloomington, but not in Normal.  They cut the pizza in long thin strips not pie shaped pieces like most places.  Made it easier to hold onto and eat.

Marvin, based upon my experience, women consider shopping a sport. I have spent many hours as the designated handbag/shoppingbag holder. Most stores have very uncomfortable benches next to the dressing rooms just for "Holders", waiting to patronize their partner when she makes her entrance.. Women can spend entire Saturday afternoons trying on everything imaginable and then step out of that little room ready to ask our opinion. BTW, it had better be positive! "Oh yes, you look great!" "Yes, I love the color!" "It fits perfectly. It makes you look slim and trim!"

Of course, they never buy anything. I think its a test to see if their "man-friend" is a keeper. Oh, it's not limited to clothing and shoes. It's EVERYTHING. Dishes, latex paint colors, greeting cards, flea-market junk, and even Lowes and Menards. So yes, shopping is a sport. The "Holder" had better get a lot of base hits. He had better score a lot of points. His reward.......We get to do it again, tomorrow!

One other thing. I did the shopping thing in Chicago, at Neiman Marcus. My friend tried on a $600 dress. Of course she didn't buy it, though it looked fansatic. We gave it back to the sales clerk and settled for one of their famous, very expensive chocolate chip cookies. It was fun. I thought we would end up in a Chicago jail!

I too only remember only Cassela's on S. Main in Bloomington.  It was a great date place. Jim and I went on many a date there. When I think of a pizza place on main in Normal I think of Tobin's. it also has great pizza but not as good as Cassela's in my opinion.
