Hi Linda,

I am still with my sister in Carlsbad with my sister. She lives 30 miles north of San Diego and is two miles from the beach! The weather is gorgeous! I get home on March 30th late evening. I love it out here! Hope all is going well with you.

Living out here  would be great but we would never leave our daughters and grandchildren. My brother-in-law retired as a Colonel in the marines. They were transferred out here about 30 years ago and never left. I wouldn't     have either. The weather is beautiful!

Baseball season is upon us.  I think the Cubbies play the Cardinals Sunday night.  So, for those who might be interested .......

Headline in today's news: MLB Average Salary tops $4 million.
I don't think I ever made that kind of dough.  Would have to look up old tax returns.  Or maybe those Fords and Toyota's that I've driven over the years would tell the story on that.

Anyhow, thinking about that $4 million.

I was in my prime baseball fan years when I was a kid in the 1950's.  Average salary in 1950 was $13k.  $16K in 1960.  Both of those figures are equivalent to $126K today, using the inflation calculator.

In 1969, a famous or infamous year for those lovable Cubbies, the MLB average was $25K.  By '84, another memorable Cubbie year, it had risen to $329K.  That's $743 in today's dollars.  Not bad, but A-Rod would scoff at it.

In 1992 the average first topped $1 mil and then $2 mil in 2001.

Nolan Ryan was the first million dollar player, made that amount right on the nose in 1980.

A Rod has been the highest paid since 2001 with the exception of one year, when it was Jason Giambi.

Babe Ruth was the highest paid player from 1922 to 1934.  Ah, the Yankees again. His salary bounced around from a high of $80 to a low of $35.

It took until 1949 before anybody topped that $80k.  Joe Dimaggio made $100.  Damn Yankees.

Come 1963, Willie Mays made $105.  People talked of him being the GOAT.  This was before that term, GOAT, became verbal currency.  Matter of fact, GOAT has an entirely different association in baseball, as we well know.

Willie's $105 would inflation convert to $805 in 2015.  So, nowdays the average player makes 5 times what the greatest player ever made in 1963.  Hmm.

Remember Dick Allen?  Made $200 for the White Sox in 1973.

Hank Aaron made $220 in 1974, the year he topped Ruth’s record.

Aaron weighed around 180, by the way.  Ponder that.

This Sunday is Easter.  Remember delightful Easter Egg hunts when you were little?  Where I live, we didn't see much of that.  In 1993 I began a neighborhood hunt at our 10+ acre park.  The teenagers all helped and have pretty much given the Neighborhood Association the bug to keep it going.  At first, many people didn't understand and treated it like a party!  They wanted to drop the kids off and return a few hours later.....at 9:00 am on Easter morning.  They have come a long way!

Happy Easter y'all!

Linda

Linda, you're a good person with a gracious heart. Though some may not understand Easter, our rewards have nothing to do with what's here on Earth.

Happy Easter

Thanks for giving me a heads-up on your photos from your travels!  I loved them.  I really enjoyed seeing the pic of the monks too.  I got to meet the Dalai Lama in Chicago's Midway Airport about 10-15 years ago.

Yes....Contract or Duplicate Bridge.  Pain in the .................!  I completed my year of instruction.  Now they just want for us to play in tournaments and sign up for on-going interactive instruction forever!  No Way!

You have a beautiful family!   Here's hoping that you really get to enjoy them.

Blessings to you and your's!

Rod:

First it was the Chihuahua's, whom are affectionately referred to as the Pups........now I found that we also have a hockey team called the Rhino's.  That name has nothing, even mildly, related to our city nor area.

I'm glad I don't give a flip about sports!

Been off the site for a bit.  Catching up.  I did notice on the original April B-Day list one of our mates was left off.  That would be Terry Snow.  His was either the 7th or the 8th.

Steve Frankeberger - You know that Vegas had them at 50-1 to win the WS back in late 2014.  With the signing of Lester they dropped it to 12-1.  It could actually happen - Not.  But maybe 2017.  By the way Steve, I was thinking about you the other day.  Back in I think 9th. grade, didn't you, David Wissmiller, and myself set next to each other in the cornet section of band?

What a group of readers.  My reading is pretty much the News, anything with Golf and sports related.  If a book is really any good, it will be a movie.  Then I go.

Congrats Mel on being a Grand Pa!!  It's another whole new world.

Max - Great comment on the no beer sales at Wrigley.  I've been a Cub Fan since I was around 6 or 7 and may whole family was.  So, I can't even count the times I've been to Wrigley field.  That's on my bucket list.  One more time at Wrigley.

Mr. Jetton - I loved all your statistics on salaries.  It was great.  I would say that you have to be careful calling Willie the GOAT.  He was definitely great and was a household name.  But, you would get a few arguments about other players of that time.  I've had some great discussions about players in all sports about who was or wasn't the GOAT.  So, since all sports have changed rules and players are bigger, faster, money has become a huge factor, I have resolved to put players in sort of their Era.  I find that keeps a friendly discussion from becoming a full blown argument, most of the time.

Linda - I'm glad to hear they call the Baseball team the Pup's.  So much better.  I know you probably don't follow sports that much, but, the Pup's really do have a good team.  You should go a couple times.  You may see a guy who someday will make it big in the Majors.  Take the kids.  Now I'm a big Hockey Fan, so, I kinda like the Rhino name.  I'll have to check them out to see what League Level they're in and if they have any up and comers.  By the way, the list is too long, but there are a lot of names out there that don't relate to the town they play in.  It could be worse.  They have named them the El Paso Elves. Ha! Ha!  NOT a good name for a Hockey team.

Gotta go.  Almost Tee time.  And --- Kentucky Derby getting close.

Rod:

I am choosing how I pass my time until I croak.  I won't attend any ***** game to pass time.  Further, my family do not act as billboards for any team by wearing clothing with a team name.  No way in.....!  Instead of sitting and watching...........our family are more active and actually living their own lives!

Grandkids mountain climb with parents, ski, water ski, swim, diving, gymnastics, golf, tennis, dance, race mountain bikes, fish, hunt with parents, play musical instruments, love to cook, travel, do artwork and play!!!!  Although they are on-line sometimes, I do not allow them to have their own phones nor cell phones.  Yes, they know how to operate them and are computer savvy.  They are also taking mountain rescue this summer.

I don't allow phones and cell phones of their own..........I think it stifles their learning interaction of gaining 'street smarts' and dealing with people in person.  You can probably figure out that I was strict with my kids, but, they also got to do a lot of things that very few other kids get to  achieve in their lifetime.  I tried to raise them to be leaders of their own life.......then if they could help others in the world........great!  I just didn't want them to be followers!  I think the world has enough followers who don't think for themselves!!!!!

Now......I'll behave myself and quit preaching!

Linda

Well Linda - I actually pretty much agree with most everything you have said.  However, a lot of the activities you listed are either team or individual sports.  Unlike when we were kidss sports were a game and now they are just a business.  Although I do agree with a lot of your thoughts, sporting activities can be good and enhance a child in a lot of ways.  As far as attending the events, you don't have to become an avid fan.  But a once in awhile attendence can be a good fun experience.  More discussion on this matter later maybe.  By the way, for you and I, summer is here.

Rod:

Perhaps I could better state my intentions of sports:  that some participation is good as long as I don't have to watch professional and college sports!

I don't find it enjoyable at all!   Not fond of bullfights either!   I would rprefer the bull be in the form of a filet!

Kids:  I believe in an attempt to get them as well-rounded as possible.

Linda
