Terry (Max) Maxwell

I've been to 3 Packers games... when they played da Bears for 2 of them and to be a designated driver for the other when someone had tickets to a sky box and I just couldn't pass that up... even to have to watch the Packers.  Mike... not a Leinies drinker myself... but I know a lot of them.

Linda - We usually have it just a bit colder than you.  However, not so much this winter.  It hasn't made me too  happy though.  It has cut into my golf time, although, I may play this afternoon.  My Grand-Boys would like to see it snow.  School would be out of course and they could slide on the hills.  I was really sorry we didn't get to talk much at the Reunion.  I wanted to ask you some things about where you live and that actually pretty good, pathetic named Triple A baseball team.  Maybe next time.

Suzi - Da Bears are on the right track, but, unfortunately, we will most likely be stuck with Jay-Boy for at least one more year and probably two.  Check my comments to Jack about the Greenberg article below.

Jack - By now, I hope you realize listning to all those OLD Bear players about Jay-Boy was not too wise.  But as I told Suzi, they are at least headed in the right direction.  When I wear my Bear Hat or Jersey down here, I always tell people, "Bears, Super Bowl 2018".  I just get a laugh.  You need to read an article by Jon Greenberg of ESPN that he wrote back in Dec..  He has followed Jay-Boy since college.  He beats him down prettky hard.  For now though, I have to put all my energy into the Blackhawks and the upcoming Cubbie season, which has a great deal of promise, finally.

Ed -  All I will say about 'BAMA' is they really looked just awful on both sides of the ball.  I have to give all the credit in the world to the 'Buckeyes'.  They sure surprised me.

Max - A couple years down here and you would never get used to going back to those cold winters.  But, at lease now you don't have to get out in it if you don't want.

Gotta go for now.  The sun is out and the temp is going up.  Headed to the golf course.

Rod,

I backed Trestman because I was looking for offense. In retrospect, if he ever had the team, he lost them in December, 2013.

As for Cutler, I think they’ll probably stay married to the contract for a while…..one, maybe two more years. In a stroke of good fortune, Ryan Leaf got out of the can in December and will be available whenever the Bears cut ties with Cutler.

Jack,

If you want offensive players, I think we can find several around the league - Ray Rice, Ben Rothlesberger, Michael Vick, Aaron Hernandez, all come to mind.

Jack Habich

David, Thanks for clarifying that Hernandez is still offensive. Thought maybe he'd switched sides. Saw him briefly on TV the other day and heard a man say "will The Defendant please stand".

On the topic of offense, I see The Bears are talking to Charlie Weis. That guy can really be offensive.

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Jack - I think you're right on Jay Boy.  Unless soemthing really strange happens, the Bears are probably stuck with him for at least a year and most likely two.  I Leaf could loose a few pounds, he might be the next backup, but I would go with Jeff George, if he is still around.  Ha! Ha!

Dave - I'd love to have Big Ben, if he wasn't so old.  Vick is a real head case and the other two would fit in down here with Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.  Jerry loves guys with a lot of baggage.

The Bears are actually making some good moves right now and if Fox can get Cutler's attitude under control, (that should be interesting, no else has), they might actually have a winning season next year.

Right now the Cubbies are looking like they may have an exciting team next year.

Michael (Mike) Franks

Rod, you know I've felt the winter excitement for the Cubs since I was 10 yeas old. Needless to say, it hasn't happened in all those years. Now, at 68, I identify more closely with Steve Goodman's tribute to "A Dying Cub Fans Last Request." (You tube) I have concluded that "God is not a Cub fan"!

Is that AGE or Temperature?  With the 'cold front and rain that came through last night, I'm feeling all 12 knee surgeries and the back surgery today.  Can't imagine what it will be like when I'm 86.  Whine, wine, wine - I know that will help (no, those aren't typos)

Terry (Max) Maxwell

Glad it's not 84* here Victor... I'd be sweating.  We had 24* with a stiff wind today... now that's more like it.  Snowed about 1", so went out with the leaf blower to clear the driveway and my hands were numb when I came in... that's what I'm talkin' about!  Oh well, only another month or two and it will be clear up in the 40s.  Just can't understand why anyone would want to be where it's in the 80s... yes, I'm extremely jealous.  Go ahead and rub it in.

Mike, Milan and anyone who will listen to me.............

I couldn't get log on to our class website.  Mike Eddings sent an email to me with the message that I should click on where his email said 'site open'.   I did so and I could get in with my same log on info.

When I try to go to the site by myself, a sign says the site is down for maintenance.   The same thing happened about a year ago.  I forgot what had to be done for it to work.   If you can help me regarding this issue, please email me at eliasli@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks.

I was asked what I do for Valentine's Day by a neighbor girl who is 8 years old.

I realized that she really wanted to know so I told her that I sent Valentine's to my children and grandchildren, then delivered small boxes of candy to very close friends.  She wanted to know if she was a very close friend.  I acquiesed and said, yes.

As she unwrapped one of the small boxes to eat candy I asked what she liked to give for Valentine's Day.  Little Patricia said she liked to give Valentine's to her Grandma, Mom and Dad and friends, but that this was a special year.  Her grandma had died and she didn't know how to give a Valentine to her anymore.  She said since I was the oldest person she knows, maybe I could tell her how to give a Valentine to someone who died.

I told her with every Valentine that she opened, and with every bite of candy from my Valentine to her, that her grandma was smiling down on her and enjoying the Valentine too!   This little girl is so smart and speaks like an adult.  Sometimes.........I can't wait for her to go home and leave me alone.

What are you all doing for Valentines's Day.........or should I ask?

Blessings to all at Valentine's Day!

Linda

Do any of you play the Modern Contract Bridge?

I've been taking lessons for a year.  Played in a tournament on Saturday and placed 3rd in partners.  Played Monday and I must have placed last.   When I walked into the Bridge Center, it looked like a nursing home.  No wonder they want some younger blood!  People were on oxygen, pushing walkers, etc.  A lady 90 said she keeps young playing Contract Bridge.  Maybe it helps her brain function better, but no way in hell does it help her keep young.

There has to be a better way to pass time until you die.  I wonder what sky diving is like?

Have a great day everyone!

Linda

02/19/15 03:01 PM #4837

Michael (Mike) Franks

Well Linda, age is a number on a piece of paper. Do what you like to do and never even consider what anyone else thinks. We have one life. How we live that life, is our choice. I won't skydive, but If I wanted to, and it turned my crank.....I'd jump! I enjoy reading you posts. IMO you have your head together and I'm happy for you. I still think that I'm young, and I don't look in the mirror. (Makes shaving difficult.)

Stay away from anyone or anything who lets the air out of your balloon!  BTW, what's contact bridge?  My 5 year old grand daughter likes to play OLD MAID.....Little brat cheats! Keeps giving me the OLD MAID, but I'll get even!

02/19/15 03:31 PM #4838

Linda Bristow (Elias)

Mike:

Contract Bridge is a MODERN manner of playing bridge with a few new rules.  Basically, the hands are dealt and put into a form for each hand.  The form is numbered and marked for North, South, East, and West, plus whether or not you are Vulnerable (for scoring) and if you are the Dealer.

After you play the hand, the information is put into a computer with the numbered form, position, in which you sat, and the results are printed out to see how you treated the hand against what others bid and score. (whether you do better or worse)

It helps when the people with whom you are playing actually know the coded manner of bidding and then also have card-sense to be able to compete by finessing the others into playing the cards for which you are looking.  Contract Bridge is often compared to Chess but played with cards.  It takes a lot of thought, learning, memory, being able to keep track of how many cards have been played and what's outstanding in each suit, being aware of your seat, remembering the bid, what was played first, etc.........

Playing can be mind-wretching to be able to be in control of everything you need to know and keep up with.  I have now begun to collect master points.  I was told that we can play in many countries, cruise ships, locally in all states to compete for American Contract Bridge League master points.

Some people think it is so fun.   I have yet to get that feeling.   I could be happy just having an ice cream cone.

Sorry to be so lengthy in my explanation.   I figure that if someone needs to play this game for kicks, ......they might be leading a limited life.

Linda

The story:

THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ALL SENIOR CITIZENS.

Letter from a senior gentleman in Mesa, Arizona:

Dear Family, Friends, Neighbors, and former Classmates,
I just found myself in the middle of a medical situation that made it
Very clear that "the Affordable Care Act" is neither affordable, nor
Do they care.

I'll go back about seven years ago to a fairly radical prostate
Surgery that I underwent. The Urologist (a personal Friend) who
Performed the surgery was very concerned that it was cancer, though I
Wasn't told this until the lab report revealed it was benign.

Since that procedure, I have experienced numerous urinary tract
Infections, UTI's.
Since I had never had a "UTI" prior to the prostate surgery, I assumed
That it is one of the side effects from surgery, an assumption since
Confirmed by my Family Doctor.

The weekend of March 8-9, I was experiencing all the symptoms of
Another bout of UTI. By Monday afternoon the infection had hit with
Full force.
Knowing that all I needed was an antibiotic, I went to an Urgent Care
Center in Mesa, AZ, to provide a specimen a requirement for getting
The prescription.

After waiting 45 minutes to see the Doctor, I started getting very
Nauseous and light headed.

I went to the Receptionist to ask where the bathroom was, as I felt
That I was going to throw up. I was told that I would have to wait for
The Doctor because I would have to leave a specimen and they didn't
Want me in the bathroom without first seeing him.

That was when the lights went out. My next awareness was that of
Finding myself on the floor (in the waiting room) having violent dry
Heaves, and very confused. At this point, I tried to stand up but
Couldn't make it, and they made it very clear they weren't going to
Let me get up until the ambulance got there. By the way, when you're
Waiting to see the Doctor and you pass out, you get very prompt
Attention.

Now, "the rest of the story", and the reason for sending this to so many of
You.

I was taken to the nearest hospital, to emergency. Once there, I was
Transported to an emergency examination room. Once I had removed my
Clothes and donned one of those lovely hospital gowns, I finally got
To see a Doctor.
I asked "what is going on? I'm just having a UTI. Just get me the
Proper medication and let me go home." He told me that my symptoms
Presented the possibility of sepsis, a potentially deadly migration of
Toxins, and that they needed to run several tests to determine how far
The infection had migrated.

For the next 3 hours I was subjected to several tests, blood draws,
EKG's, and demands for specimens. At about 7:30 the nurse came back to
My room to inform me that one of the tests takes 1- 2 days to
Complete. I asked if they (the results) could be emailed, at which
Point she informed me that I wouldn't need them emailed because I
Wasn't going anywhere. I started arguing with her, but was told, "If
You don't start behaving, I'll start taking your temperature
Rectally," at which point I became a perfect gentleman. I did tell her
I wanted to see the doctor because I had no intention of staying
Overnight.

Now, this is what I want each of you to understand. Please read these
Next sentences carefully. The doctor finally came in to inform me that
He was going to admit me. I said, "Are you admitting me for treatment
Or for observation?"
He told me that I would be admitted for observation. I said, "Doctor,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you admit me for observation, my
Medicare will not pay anything. This due to the Affordable Care Act."

He said,"That's right, it won't."

I then grabbed for my bag of clothing and said, "Then I'm going home."
He said you're really too sick to be going home, but I understand your
Position. This health program is going to hit seniors especially hard.

The doctor then left the room and I started getting dressed. I was
Just getting ready to put my shoes on when another doctor (the closer)
Came into the room. He saw me dressed and said, "Where do you think
You are going?" I simply said "I'm going home." To which he replied,
Quite vociferously, "No you aren't. I said, "Doc, you and I both know
That under the "Affordable Care Act" anyone on Medicare who is
Admitted to a hospital for observation will be responsible for the
bill. Medicare won't pay a cent."

At which point he nodded in affirmation. I said, "You will either
admit me for a specific treatment or you won't admit me." Realizing he
wasn't going to win this one, he said he would prepare my release
papers.
A few minutes later, the discharge nurse came to my room to have me
sign the necessary papers, relieving them from any responsibility. I
told her I wasn't trying to be obstinate, but I wasn't going to be
burdened with the full (financial) responsibility for my hospital
stay.

After making sure the door was closed, she said, "I don't blame you at
all, I would do the same thing."
She went on to say, "You wouldn't believe the people who elect to
leave for the same reasons, people who are deathly sick, people who
have to be wheeled out on a gurney." She further said, "The
'Affordable Care Act' is going to be a disaster for seniors. Yet, if
you are in this country illegally, and have no coverage, you will be
covered in full."

This is not internet hype folks, this is real. I just experienced it
personally.
Moving right along, this gets worse.

Today I went to a (required) follow up appointment with my Arizona
Family Practitioner. Since my white count was pretty high, the follow
up was important. During the visit, I shared the experience at
emergency, and that I had refused to be admitted. His response was, "I
don't blame you at all, I would have done the same thing." He went on
to say that the colonoscopy and other procedures are probably going to
be dropped from coverage for those over 70."

I told him that I had heard that the "Affordable Care Act" would no
longer pay for cancer treatment for those 76 and older, is that true?
His understanding is that it is true.
The more I hear, and experience the Affordable Care Act, the more I'm
beginning to see that we seniors are nothing more than an
inconvenience, and the sooner they can get rid of us the better off
they'll be.

We can have an impact on this debacle by letting everyone in Congress
know that their responsibility is to the constituents, not the
president and not the lobbyists. We need to let them ALL know that
they are in office to serve and to look after the BEST INTERESTS of
"we the people," their employers, and not to become self serving
Bureaucrats who serve only out of greed. And if they don't seem to
understand this simple logic, we'll fire them.

REMEMBER:
Demand your hospital admission is for TREATMENT and NOT for OBSERVATION!

SEND THIS TO EVERY SENIOR AND ALL MILITARY (ACTIVE OR VET) AND LET THEM KNOW THIS IS HOW OUR REPRESENTATIVES ON CAPITOL HILL TREAT THOSE WHO RISK IT ALL SO THEY CAN SIT UP THERE AND ENJOY ALL THE BENEFITS THEY EXEMPT FROM THE REST OF US.

AH, HA!   I sneeked in and marked the OLD MAID!  Those 5 year olds think they're so smart. I'll show them!

Now, if I could just master, "Go Fish!"

Steve Jetton

I'll throw a change up here, in case anybody is interested in local sports lore.

“Baseball season is here again ….”   At least spring training is getting underway.  So I was thinking a little bit about how ballplayers had way cooler names back in the day than they do now.   One of my favorites popped into my head, Fatty Fothergill.   Wasting time on the internet I looked him up …. be damned if he didn’t play a season for the Bloomington Bloomers before he moved up to the big leagues.  Hit .332 that year (1920) which is typical of how he hit when he played  for Detroit and then later the White Sox.

A lot of you probably know about Bloomington having that Three – Eye League team from the early years of last century up to around 1940.  They played in Fans Field on Lafayette street, around where the Lafayette Club & National Guard building are today.  At times they were affliated with the Cardinals and the Yankees.

I’d hang out at my uncle’s grocery store when I was a kid.  An avid baseball fan, he’d be in the “back room” in the evening, cutting meat and sipping beer and would tell me stories about “back when Bloomington was in the Three-Eye League.”   Also talked of an amateur team he played on, the  Capodice Cubs, sponsored by the local wholesale produce distributor.  They actually went up to Chicago and got old Cubbie uniforms to wear.   The old Capodice warehouse still stands  along side the railroad tracks on, I believe South Madison, waiting for it’s inevitable destiny with the wrecking ball.  Went down there many times to load up the old station wagon with lettuce, bananas, tomatos, etc.

‘Course, when it comes to old time baseball names, nothing tops  “Old Hoss”  Radbourn, nowadays a ghostly presence in Evergreen Cemetary.

When it comes to baseball’s poor relation, whiffleball, local legends Hays and Jetton messed up by not acquiring cool nicknames.   But don’t consider that an invitation, Rod has tender sensibilities.

Milan Jackson

Something to keep in mind about Old Hoss, back in his day, you were allowed two or three steps toward the plate before you had to release the ball. That is a tremendous advantage for a pitcher. No wonder he won 59 games in one year. But he was still the greatest of his time. Too many games meant a shorter career.

02/23/15 06:57 PM #4844

David Long

I always thought that Rod's nickname was "HOTRod Hays" and Steve's was "Afterburner Jets On" Jetton, but maybe that was only after too many bean and onion burritos...

02/26/15 11:13 AM #4845

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

OK Mr. Jetton and Mr. Long.  It's not Hays, it's Hayes.  That's ok, we're all getting older.

Mike Franks - I only have 2 years on you as far as dying every years with our Cubs.  I got started at 8 yrs. old.  But hang in there because barring injury, I think the Cubbies will actually have a respectful year.  They've actually done some really good things in the off season.  We'll see.

Steve & Dave - A few people still call me Hot Rod, but as far back as can remember, the first person to ever call me  Hot Rod was Dr. Bailen.  No matter when he saw me, it was always Hot Rod.  Several years back I worked with some pretty young guys and one used to call me the Old Goat.  Whenever someone would ask me why they called me that, I would say, because I am the Goat.  (GREATEST OALL TIME).  How bout that for a comeback.

Steve - I remember my family talking about the old 3-I League.  I worked with a guy who pitched in that league.  You are right about names though.  Baseball had and still has some pretty good nicknames. The best one I can think of would be, Cubbies World Champions.  Other than a cool nickname, we made one big mistake Steve.  We never applied for the Wiffleball Hall of Fame.  After all, I'm pretty sure we both played more innings, pitched more innings, and based on our ground rules, had more hits then anyone, then or today. By the way, that was a great idea about the signing and auction of the wiffleball at the 50th.  Maybe at the 55th.

John Kincaid - Great article.  Really got my attention.

Linda - We really need the moisture, but I'm ready for that Texas heat.  Has it been cool in El Paso?  You're Valentine explanation was wonderful.  You're Baseball Team will be getting started real soon now.  They finished really well last year, dispite their ugly, barking, shaking Mascot doggie.

Gotta Go - HOT ROD!!!!!
