Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Ed, I wanted to get back to you on the Tide Victory, but my internet has had some issues.  Anyway, it was great to see Johnny run for his life.  As Judy said, it got a little iffy, but watching the game in it's entirety, I think one would agree that Alabama pretty much had the game under control.  Of course, down here, no one talks about the fact that the Aggies lost, just how great Johnny looked.  Give me a break.

And Judy, I wouldn't have guessed you to be a big sports fan.  By the way, does your husband play golf.  I noticed in one of the pictures he was wearing a Tour Partners shirt.

Jack,  we are starting to lose some of the great old boxers of our time.  I hated to see Ken Norton pass on.  I think he won a few fights that he never got the win for.  You knew he was from Ilinois I guess.  Jacksonville I think.

Gotta run for now.

Judy Tynan (Danielson)

Rod, I am more of a sports fan than my husband but I'm not really very good at what I see!!!  George played golf years ago then gave it up until we started wintering in AZ & friends talked him into taking it up again.  I took lessens at age 63 for the 1st time.  I'm horrible, love to watch it but don't like to play.  Anybody need a brand new set of clubs, shoes & clothes?? I wanted to at least look good on the course even though couldn't play with a hoot!!  We had gone to the FBR in Scottsdale for a few years & really enjoyed it.

Now we winter in Gulf Shores Alabama and of course you have to get caught in all the ROLL TIDE hipe!!!!   Still have to cheer for good ole Illinois & the BEARS!!!!

Rod,

Ken Norton was indeed from Jacksonville, Illinois. He was a couple of years ahead of Malinda, but she knew him.

He was a natural athelete, excelling at everything he tried, and no matter where he went, he never forgot that Jacksonville was his hometown

Jacksonville, is the location of Illinois College, my almer Mater and where I met Malinda. She was a "townie".

Jacksonville, is a beautiful little town that I dearly love... go back all the time

GOLF? who in his/her right mind would chase a small ball around a cow pasture with little sticks?

Rod,

You could make a strong case....as he did.....that Norton (not Steve or Jackie Gleason's friend, but Ken) won all three of his showdowns with Ali, even though he got only one decision.  Took a bad beating from Gerry Cooney though.

Another boxer who went to the canvas in the sky recently was Ron Lyle.  You can't see him in the picture, but he was laying on an earthly canvas (left side) when I took this shot in 1975.  Lyle was ahead on all cards through round 11.

If you look carefully, you'll find Don King's hair.

And Ed, I had heard that Norton was a good football player too, as was his son who became a pro and now coaches at Seattle, I think.

But a side note on Jacksonville.  I had a full ride wrestling offer at McMurray College, but settled on ISU.  I'd gained 20+ lbs. real quick after HS and first match at my new weight was against none other than McMurray.  As I recall, the McMurray guy kicked my azz.  I remember then figuring that their coach (Italian name) was clicking his heels that he saved his money.

Judy, how nice of you to respond.  I'm glad your husband decided to take the game back up.  You're most likely not as bad as you thought, but at least you gave it a try.  It's great that you went to the tournaments and like watching them on TV.  At least now, hopefully, you have a better appreciation for the skill and mental capacity a pro golfer has.  Like all pro athletes, they click in a different gear.  And like you, I still follow the Bears every week.  I still love my Cubs, why I don't know, but I do.  We actually get about half of the Ilini games here and I wish every year that they would put a better product on the field.  I also keep a keen eye on the Blackhawks.  The last 3 years have been great.  Now by the way, since you spend some time at Gulf Shores.  Did you ever run into a couple by the name of Ron & June Essig?  Probably not, but, you never know.

Now Ed.  The ball you speak of, over time has become a very fined tuned, aerodynamicly, precisioned sphere.  True that many pastures have become golf courses.  But when they are complete, they are magnificant layouts of the utmost beauty.  Several different types of grass, tress, flowers, and plants.  They are extremely and most eloquintly manicured.  Those little sticks are put together by master craft technicians.  They use the finest carbon steel, graphite, and titanium mixtures known to man.  Their forging process is impecable.  Basically, only those who play the game of golf can really appreciate the instruments they have and the beauty of the land they play on.

Helen.  I'm not a big Bronco fan, but I am a Peyton Manning fan.  I see the Broncos doing very very well this year.

Jack, I enjoyed your picture, but when you mentioned Don King, I threw up.  I just detest that guy.  To me he is just a useless human being.   Oh Jack, I'm working on finding some thin dark glasses for you

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Jerry has always been a great person. I'm sad beyond reason with this news, I was hoping so much to see him again. The rug has just been pulled out from under me. I'll also be watching the Pantagraph. My deepest sympathies to Kathy and Jerry's family. This is a huge loss for all.

Time to get a glass of California wine, a box of tissues and remember a great swimmer and friend.

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Well,  I read the news about Jerry Plummer.  I'm shocked and so saddened.  I was actually going to put him in this message.  First my condolences to entire Plummer family.  This has just not sunk in yet for me.  He was such a great responder on this site.  I grew up with Jerry all through Grade School, Jr. HIgh, and High School.  He was always a staple at Oakland School and during the summer.  As we progressed through Hgh School our interests and close friends were different and we drifted apart.  Since I have been on this web site, I felt like I had re-connected with and old friend.  He had brought me many laughs and I was so much wanting to see him and talk with him again.  I'm just stunned.  I'll miss him for sure.  R.I.P Jerry.

WOW! So sorry to hear of Jerry's passing! He was and always will be a memory in my past! And to think, we were possibly going to look him up while in Hemet, CA., next year! This is an example of never putting off today what might not be for tomorrow?!?!

Rod,

The problem with golf is that it is played on golf courses. You described the problem... perfectly good pastures turned into urban ghetto affairs. All the special grass, trees and plants take away from what was a natural beauty

For my part, give me a bass boat, a quantity of rods and tackle, and a good river, like the Tennessee and you can have your yuppie ghetto and small balls

To Jerry Plummer's family I offer my deepest sympathy.  Bless you all!

Class:  When I read his wife's message that Jerry enjoyed our class website, I was happy that he got to interact with everyone who participates!  Here's to Jerry, may he rest in Peace with the Hope that we will all see him again, and that you all can play sports, have joking talks, and have fun in Heaven!

Blessings to all!

Just a reminder to singers from the Class of 1964, rehearsal tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 1:30. Performance at 3pm. The Pantagraph is covering this story about Mark Selk and getting us together for a performance. Be a part of this and show up. It will be a hoot. You don't have to be a former member of A Cappella, just some singing experience. See you all tonight and tomorrow afternoon. Don't miss this whatever you do. A reminder, Mary Selk is 92 years old.

Milan - Thanks for saying "Hi" to Carroll.

Ed - I've heard this all my life, so, no big deal.  You see, I have never understood how anyone could set in a boat, in the heat and humidity, (freezing cold if you're ice fishing), look at dead trees along the bank, get that nasty smell of the pond or river, and maybe not catch anything.  You see Ed, a Golf Architect takes an area that has little to offer.  He keeps what beauty the area offers, and then expands on it to make it Eco friendly.  A lot of the new courses being constructed have large areas within the bounds of the course that you can't walk or ride a cart through.  These areas offer a view of the native plants and trees of the area.  You see Ed, golf and fishing can be somewhat similar.  You spend 4 or 5 hours in a boat and catch nothing.  Very frustrating.  A golfer spends 4 or 5 hours chasing a little white ball, trying to get it to go where he wants, usually with not the success he wants.  Very frustrating.

Linda - I see temps are starting to drop back into the low 90's and high 80's in El Paso.  The same is true here.  Our summer is almost over and Spring is just around the corner.  After that one month of Fall and Winter together.
