Linda, The Illinois House has a Web site at http://illinoishousebuilding.net/ with the folllowing statement:
"The Illinois House Building, located on the northwest corner of the Old Courthouse Square in Downtown Bloomington, is a Bloomington landmark. Originally built as a hotel known as "The Illinois" in 1902, the building was purchased in 1977 by John R. Luedtke, Darrell L. Hartweg and Ralpy T. Turner, who moved their law firm to the Illinois House that same year. Since then, the building has undergone extensive renovation and remodeling. Staffed by a full-time building manager as well as a full-time maintenance crew, the building retains its historical feel while providing modern and efficient commercial office space to its tenants."
Many of us remember our first Class of 64 reunion being there in 1974. It was an amazing experience because I think it marked the period of greatest change in so many of our lives. Marriages, families, college grads, war vets, a few deaths and the cultural revolution swept through our lives during those 10 years and we came together as full-fledged adults at that reunion. In many ways it was also the most awkward, because those who were there didn't know what to expect with the locals and those scattered throughout the world by then, all being curious about each other. There was still a tinge of competitiveness, but it was the beginning of our life-long collaboration through which we have learned how much we all have in common.
Currently the first floor corner of The Illinois House is the A. Renee Cafe and Wine Shop. It is an elegant, upscale den where you can enjoy exotic chocolates, espresso, handcrafted drinks and great conversation with the comfort of pillows and sofas. Dave and Sandy Holt, Pat R., Judy Neal, Marv and I have all become fans of the place. The history lives on.
