Rodney (Rod) Hayes

I got a 83% like you Ed.  I never was a Chrysler guy.  Never was and still aren't, and they kept me out of the mid 90's.

Jerry - In a split second, I saw the 49'ers go from Super Bowl to back home.  This could very very easily been a Ravens, 49'ers Super Bowl.  There was one good thing that came from that game.  Little Cry Baby, I won't play unless I get my way, Eli, got the s--t kicked out of him.  I suspect he will have a special, behind the scenes meeting with his blockers.  He'll have to let them know he was not happy picking himself up off the ground so many times, and that he does not appreciate going to the locker room with all that mud and dirt on him.  Get a life Eli.

Now Helen.  I think Joe was a good man and wanted to do the right things.  He was for sure a great coach in his day.   But he stayed in the game too long.  He should have gotten out a long time ago, especially when he got sick.  Almost any Doctor will tell you that the worst thing for a Cancer patient is Stress and losing Hope.  Joe was under more stress than any of us could probably imagine.  With that over the past few months, I really think he gave up.  It's too bad, but, I think he let a very bad situation become more than he could understand or handle.  Hopefully, his Legacy won't be this incident, and that people will remember him for Joe Paterno, the coach, the man.

Right you are, Rod.  #66 David Diehl, is the worst tackle in football. He didn't block anybody all day! They ran through him like a revolving door. He was the only Giant that didn't have a dirty jersey. I'm sure that Eli had a talk with him after the first aid. BTW, he's a U of I grad.

Gerald (Jerry) Plummer

Rod, I have to agree with you.  The 49ers beat themselves, the other (NY) Giants just happened to be on the field.  Oh well, wait 'till next year. Kathy and I will go drown our sorrows in Napa.  In the meantime, we picked up a good 3-4 feet of snow in the Sierra over the weekend which was our first rain/snow storm since October.  Time to wax the skis and head to Tahoe. As is our tradition if the Niners aren't in the Stupor Bowl, we ski that weekend as the crowds are smaller.  Also Mavericks is coming up, the Crosby and above all, baseball is coming soon.  So we'll get over it.

LET'S GO GIANTS

Rod, I must have come across wrong regarding Joe Paterno!  I reread my post to make certain I didn't say anything misguiding, but must have misled you!  Anyway, I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart causing the cancer to esculate and causing all the additional stress!  All his Championship Winnings was proof that he was a GREAT and SUCESSFUL COACH!  Penn State is hosting a Memorial Service in memory of Joe, which also sends the message that they too, thought highly of him!  I think Joe got a raw deal getting terminated, but was also involved in the politics of the education world, and unfortunately I understand more than most, regarding the politics that go on.  Joe took all the proper actions and followed required procedures to turn Sandusky in, however it was not taken seriously by his Supervisors.  Such a sad story, and too bad Joe didn't live long enough to receive his much deserved apologies for his wrongful termination. He will be sorely missed by all that he encouraged to succeed!  crying

To pick up where Marvin left off................

I have spoken to a few people.   They would like a change to the reunions.

They would like to be able to visit with people and not have a program, skits, etc.

What they would prefer seems to be our music, but not so loud that we can't converse.   Buffet dinner is okay, but buffet finger food is okay too.

Tables and chairs okay.........but they don't want to sit in them all night and then the reunion to end.

They prefer that most of the reunion is mingling to see each other.

Lastly, they prefer that more locals try to participate so the burden doesn't always fall on the same people.  They feel that Marvin did so much work on the last one, that it is time for someone else to try leading with the help of a group of locals to vote on each process.

Hope this will allow others to put in their ideas.

Linda

Linda, good comments on the reunion.  I responded to Marvin that I would participate on the planning committee this time around & I hope to see some other new faces when we get together in early March.

Actually, via the grapevine, I've heard that a number of folks are expressing their ideas about what they want to see in our next reunion.  A lot of that feeling about wanting more time to mingle, etc.  I think a key objective over the coming months is to collect as much of this input as we can so we can make sure and plan the reunion that the class really wants.  I think we have plenty of lead time to do that.

Maybe myself or somebody else could collect input for the committee via email or something - allowing it to be anonymous if people want.    Will bring it up when we meet in March.

At some point in the game, I became the complaint department of the class of ’64.  Though this is unsolicited, I do feel an obligation to express the people’s views. Instinct tells me that these are now the majority viewpoint.

Universally, I’m hearing that the seminar style reunion should be put to bed and that we wake up the interactive reunion complete with music. I’m hearing reunions should be for everyone.

I’m hearing, and have heard for a long time, complaints about committees just being fronts, and how several people have said “I’m outa here” forever.  Not good.

My own personal views are these:

  1.  Reunions are for people to mix, renew old friendships, both male and female, and make new ones.  I knew who you were in HS, but I want to know who you are today and how you got there.  I think any magic that comes out of a reunion comes from your experience with other people, not from what you pick up in a speech.

  1.  I want music, probably a DJ.  In my view, at weddings and reunions you have  music.  Music facilitates conversation and energizes the soul.  I do not understand the concerns about loud music.  Speakers are always set for a certain area.  Thousands of reunions per year have music where people sit and stand around and talk all night.  In fact, to not have music at a reunion is an aberration that stifles interaction.   We had music in ’74, ’84, and ’94 and people stayed around for the count.   I talked at all of them.

  1. I don’t care who is the grand chieftain of reunion planning, as long as it is not me, be it Marvin Theobald, Mike Franks or Doris Harris.  The important thing is that the grand chieftain does what the people want, and respects people on the committee.  Leadership is an art.  It is taking people to where they want to go.  It is never granted, as a boss once told me.

  1. I don’t do physics, but  have been in the people business for a long time.  I think if there is no recognition of what is being said, just forming a committee will be a chore, and putting out a good 50th is a long shot.

I would like to further the conversation of speeches vs. music/interaction and then I will shut up.

In the 90's, my wife's HS had some sort of bicentennial reunion where they decided to have an actual speaker.

That speaker was one of their own, their all-state basketball hearthrop Terry Flanagan.  Flanagan was also a professional motivational speaker. They offered Flanagan no more than 15 minutes, but Flanagan said "oh no", he wanted only 12 because at events like this you lose people after 12 minutes.

After the usual who came the furthest and who had the most kids and grandkids etc., Flanagan did his thing and gave one of the best speeches I ever heard.  Although I did not go to school there and did not know the nuns and all, he had me in stitches.  They all applauded and during the applause the music started and people rushed out on the dance floor and then sat around and talked all night.

I realize cultural differences, but I'm told that at this Catholic school of Irish, Polish, and Italians, the committee (which Dee was on) would have been strung up if they hadn't provided music.

I totally agree there should not be an evening of speeches and flashbacks.  I came in late at Lakeside at the last reunion and was bored to tears in half an hour!!!  No one stuck around afterwards.  Music, music, music.

Would be fun to gather members from the Shattertones (band from our HS years) to play for us!  They could play music from our days and reminisce with us!  Most of them graduated in 64 also.  Butch Esktum (drummer for Shattertones) works for Jack Keefe and would be a good contact.

I'm with Cheryl.  We have been to High School and don't have to relive those years again and again thru speaches and awards.  It is a time to renew old friendships and make new.  After all it will be 50 Years!!!   Music and reconnecting would be great.  Buffet would be really easy compared to sit down dinner and you can eat or not at your own pace. Just make it simple, we don't have anyone to empress anymore, do we????

I said I would shut up but I forgot to mention some very positive aspects of the last reunion.

Maybe I’ve been around a designer or two too many in my career, but the feel of the physical room at Lakeside when I walked in was the best ever.  It felt like a party was about to happen.  Much better than 2004.  I thought that there were a lot of things meticulously thought through, and there was a feel of elegance.  Personally, I wouldn’t want to lose that, and I hope people don’t want to make a main reunion too casual, like it’s Friday night at The Caboose or an evening at Walmart.  The calls for simple do not have to mean schlock.

Also, the pictures were the best ever.

Hi everyone.   Although I'm out of town I still want to help do my share.   In the past I called and updated our class directory. (108 changes)

Last time I bought stamps for the mail out.  Several stamps are left over.

I will be happy to again donate the stamps for this mail out.   However, I would also agree to purchase address 'peel and stick' labels, AND type the addresses on them.   I would overnight them to someone in Bloomington who would be participating..........to help simplify the mail stuffing and addressing.

We would still need a box of 500 business size envelopes, a ream of paper, and copying or printing expense.

This mail out would be sent to every living member of our class for whom we have addresses, to notify them of this year's mini-reunions, and to prepare them for the up-coming 50th in 2014.

Any mail returned to us, would be an alert to find their current info, in an effort of being able to contact as many of the class as possible for the 50th.

I hope this sounds ok to you all.   I don't like to put all of the responsibility on the locals,..... I really appreciate their participation.

Hugs to everyone, Linda

Linda,

Send me an address and I will send you the envelopes and paper.. and whatever else you need

Or send them to whoever needs them...

01/25/12 10:47 PM #2687

Linda Bristow (Elias)

Ed..........thanks for the paper and envelopes.

Each little bit helps doesn't it?   Now all we need is copying expense.

As soon as we find out who the committee and a person who helps steer the process will be, I will notify you.

Sounds as though the process could be up and running quickly.............we're ready and we aren't locals.

Come on RAIDERS!!!!!!!

Bless you!

Linda

Through the Class Creator System, address stickers can be automatically printed from this site. It's only one of the perks of being a member.

then we will need address labels... add that to the list and I will get them...

Milan,

can you tell me if the label wizard suggests a label size, format or product number? We want to make this easy as possible
