Rod... you mentioning the Hubers having VWs brings back a memory.  Bill Alexander's (class of '62) uncle was a member of a local car club in Bloomington.  They were having a road rally one weekend and invited Bill to join in.  Bill had no sports car to drive in the rally, so he, John Huber and I took the Huber family VW bug and entered the rally.  It was timed and they gave you a set of instructions that included speed to drive and where to go.  Each car set out at a timed interval... so if you caught the car in front of you, you were going too fast.  Well, we got lost and drove around for awhile trying to figure out where we were supposed to be.  We were out west of town, probably 10 miles and figured out from the clues that we should end up at Lake Bloomington.  We drove straight up there, not going by the listed directions.  Some guy with a flashlight came out on the road from behind a tree and stopped us.  He took our entry name and told us to keep going.  It turned out to be the final check point and thus took our time.  Later back at the party after, they awarded the trophy for best time.  We won it!  The "expert ralliers" were all discussing "downshifting their Vettes, MGs and Austin Healys through tight corners under the bridges", etc.  Some of these guys had double stop watches, compasses, and area maps.  We had a VW with 3 guys that had never been on a road rally before.   We just kept quiet and let them believe we had experienced the same in the old VW.  Kinda funny in hind sight... I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

Max,

When I was in college in Jacksonville, I worked at the Blind school. One year we had a rally with the local car club providing the cars. Each car had a blind kid as a navigator and the instructions were in Braille.

Kids could not see the road and driver could not read the instructions...

#1 rule was the driver had to do what the kid told him to do, within the bounds or safety.. those cars wound up in som einteresting places...

And the kids had a ball

Mike... The Black Hills are in South Dakota and Wyoming.  I remeber driving Needles Highway many years ago.  Drove though the tunnel in a Chevy Astro van.  Yep, it fit, but sure felt tight.  That would be  a great trip to have a sports car , for sure.

Rod,

Not sure about prison, but many jails, if not most, issue wrist bands.  Did you forget, lol?

Every detainee admitted into the St. Clair County Jail will be identified by the use of a wristband. You will be required to keep the band on at all times. Any attempt to remove, deface, or alter the wristband WILL result in the loss of your privileges.

And, Huber bought his MG after we graduated.

Yeah, I know where they are. I was looking for a little rise from our good friend Ed. I think you knew that. Speaking of such things: did you know that there's another Normal? Guess what , it really IS in Alabama! I know that Ed will chime in on this. As I remember, it's the home of Alabama A&M Univ.

Mike,

I confess ignorance about the ankle/wrist bracelets.. never having had to wear either.. I guess my education is incomplete.

Now for Normal, Alabama, I am not personally familiar with the town, but am not surprised because "Normal" schools taught budding terachers "how to teach" I suspect a number of states have towns named Normal, but not like ours as ther was only one Jesse Fell!

Michael (Mike) Franks

How right you are, my friend. Yes, we can claim Jesse Fell AND Jesse Smart., but then why would we ? About those snakes........I hate those damn things. They are absolutely thick around Constitution Trail at Corp. South. The harmless variety, but they are big and scary. Thanks! Now I'll have bad dreams.

No Jack, I haven't been down that road but I have been down Tehachapi Pass with a crazy truck driver.

In a truck, Marilyn?  Then depending on the degree of crazy, your experience and reaction may have been similar to Dee's.  Just a slight difference in vehicle.

Somebody e-mailed me that The Gag, which just opened in NYC next to David Letterman's studio, may be featured tonight.  It's the first in NY.

Max

Thanks Helen...I missed the delivery part last night.  He also had about a 2 minute lead-in, not shown in the video.

Link worked fine here.

Max, if this does not do it just type in "David Letterman Latest Videos" open the first search result and the video should be the first one on the list.

Thanks Jack... it worked off of your post but not on Helen's.  Guess when you are in the Big Apple, you have to add some class... so we now have a Steak 'n Shake "Signature"

La-ti-da !

I'm surprised they're offering the $3.95 special .....the double cheese and fries.  The rent has to be outrageous there.

01/13/12 02:14 PM #2634

Terry (Max) Maxwell

You have to have something to get them in the door.  Big sign saying $3.99 burger and fries should attract some attention in NYC.  I had a beer in TGI Fridays near the corner in Times Square and it was $16... and I didn't get the 22oz size.

Ed --  You think that's bad.  Some years ago, I went across the border into a little cantina in Mexico.  The waitress came over, I said, do you speak English.  She said, twenty dollars, and I hadn't even ordered yet.

Max --  You know I live in the land of Jerry World, known to most outside Texas, as Cowboy Stadium.  If you and a friend go to a Cowboy game, park fairly close, set in the cheap seats, don't eat, and get just a little buzz on, it will cost you around $250.00.

You know Rod, I think I met that girl. It was in Juarez. She said her mother was a virgin. I think she was telling the truth. Anyway , the $20 went for a good cause.

Ed,

That happens to all cooks, good ones and bad ones.  Bill was supposed to get eggs over easy this morning but he got over crispy and dried out blackened toast..  But the hashbrowns were good and I didn't screw up the orange juice.

Ed:

Don't feel too bad, it could have been worse!

When my niece was pregnant and had morning sickness, one Sunday her husband told her to stay in bed and he would fix breakfast.

He didn't find butter to scramble eggs in, so he used peanut butter.

When he delivered the food to her in bed, he received a treat on his feet because she couldn't run because he was in her way!

Happy cooking!

Linda
