Gerald (Jerry) Plummer

Rod, two words, Rose Bowl.

However, you're right that neither the Big 10 (or whatever number they choose to use) nor the Pac 12 (there's actually 12 teams in the conference) have shown well this season.  Looks like the bowl powers are the SEC and the Big 12.

Go Niners!!

Well, we are home from the hospital again.

On Thursday, she had a c/t scan to find out what was causing feet swelling and a distended abdomen.

this is how the original diagnosis got made... exact same symptoms and of course, we were scared the cancer was getting aggressive..

On Friday, we got the results... a bowel obstruction caused by the primary tumor.... so off to the hospital and surgery. Could not get on the schedule until Sunday Morning... New Years day, she had a colostomy. and we are now home... she is weak and she hurts some, but the abdominal pain is gone...

The good news is this may be temporary.... emphasis on "MAY BE"....

Other good news... the liver tumor is shrinking.. the chemo continues to do it's job!

Ed,

Although Malinda is going through an ordeal that most of us don’t understand…….we can’t walk in somebody else’s shoes……..the news again seems more positive than negative.

How about you?  Are you on the severe diet yet, or did you take a pass for a few days?  Helluva time to put the bourbon on the shelf.

Helen  -  I don't have the sheet in front of me, but, as I recall, the price on that little beauty was $2986, and some change.  And, remember, it had absolutely everything on it , except the High Performance 289.  Now days, you pay that for the audio upgrade.

Jerry My Good Man  -  I will have to give you the Rose Bowl.  Although it just doesn't seem the same as it did back in our day.  You didn't mention the Sun Bowl.  But then, it did end on a very ify touchdown.  It looked like White was short of the goal line.

What you didn't mention was, The Las Vegas Bowl, The Holiday Bowl, The Alamo Bowl, The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, and lastly, The Fiesta Bowl, featuring, The unlucky Mr. Luck.  By the way, those Bowls were all Pac-12 Losers.  At least next year the Pac-12 will have Mike Leach at WSU.  He will bring some excitement, and maybe even a winner in a couple years.  Now the good news Jerry.  Aside from the Bengals, (I have a soft spot for QB Andy Dalton from TCU), who won't go very far, like you, I will be cheering for a 49'ers Super Bowl.

Jack,

I continue to think she is the toughest human being I have ever encountered. She got a good night's sleep in her own bed and this morning she is at the kitchen table doing the payroll...

The overall news is good at present. The colostomy is not pleasant, but workable and we focus on the fact that it MAY be reversable..

The diet starts Jan 19th and I am gonna do it! ...

Rod, for just a few bucks commission, I can now send your Cowboys the following talent;  Jerry Angelo, Marion Sylvester Barber, Roy Williams, and of course, Uncle Sam Hurd.  The last three are well acclimated to Dallas and could show Angelo where the restaurants are..  How about it?  Think you could work it out with Jerry Jones and get back to me?

It was great to see Terry Maxwell at breakfast this morning.

Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Well Jack,

That just isn't going to happen.  Angelo is out for sure.  Jerry has made it very very clear that he is the Owner and GM.  That won't change until Hell is Froze Over, and not even then, if he can work a deal.  Barber and Williams have done their time with the Cowboys.  Barber got the big money he wanted and Roy drops as many passes as he catches.  The Cowboy fans here never did like Roy.   Most people here were taken back with the news on Hurd.  He was always known as a guy who never really got a chance to shine.  He was quiet and stayed out of the lime-light.  Rumor here was that he wanted to become the biggest drug dealer in Chicago????   The Sports Media here really eat Jerry alive, but he just lets it roll off.  Jerry is an extremely good business man, but he is one of the worst GM's in the world.  I will say one good thing about the Jones family.  They give a ton of money to charity in the area, and he pretty much demands the player to be involved with that function.  I still have a Love - Hate relationship with the Bears.  I will always love the Bears.  I can't help it.  However, McCaskey is an idiot.  I don't think he even knows what NFL stands for.  I couldn't stand Cutler before he came to the Bears, and still don't.  Lovie isn't the worst coach in the NFL, but he is way over rated.   I used to have a pretty good source to the inside of the Bears, but that has dwindled as time has pasted.  However, my source tells me that behind closed doors, Lovie has too much power with McCaskey in making personnel changes.  What they need is a good GM that who works with Lovie and not for Lovie.  They really need Jeff Fisher, but that isn't going to happen.

GO BLACKHAWS !!!!!!

Here's an update on our class finances.

We just renewed our web site subscription for another 5 years.  We were planning to re-up for three years when our current subscription ends in a few months and that would have saved about $50 over doing it annually.  However, class creator ran a "special" deal, enticement, whatever you want to call it, giving a 25% discount for subscription renewals by Jan 3.  We took the bait and got 5 years for about what we were expecting to pay for 3 years.  The 5 year deal was $262 (discounted from $359).  The normal 3 year price is $249.

Marvin Theobald, who originally set up this site for us, is still our contact with class creator, so he submitted the payment on the 3rd.   When Marv and I talked, he mentioned that he was downloading all of the up to date contact information from class creator into an excel spreadsheet.  He will repeat this periodically in order to keep up to date data.  This gives us at least some level of backup in case class creator ever goes belly up and we need to start over.  Thanks, Marv!

There is also an annual registration fee for the domain name which will get paid when Marvin is contacted for renewal.  It's about $20.

Here's an overview of our treasury status.  I have a spreadsheet but could not see a way to attach it to a posting - even though it's easy enough to paste in pictures and url links.

Beginning cash on hand             $      67.00

Class donations                           $ 1,461.71

Charitable expense (Sue)            $   (100.00)

Web site expense                        S   (262.00)

1/5/2012 cash on hand                $ 1,166.71

Hope you all had a Happy New Year.

Good deal on the 5 years. If you ever need it I also have an Excel sheet on the class of 1964. It's good to have back-up systems.

Rod,

Sam Hurd’s operation was very big.  How big?  I understand he was in talks with Jetton to use the class treasury for funding.

As for Jerry Jones, even Angelo might be a better picker of talent.  Years ago, Jones met some huge guy in a bar near closing time, and made Jimmy Johnson give him a tryout the next day.  Embarassing.  The guy was knocked all over the place and lasted about ½ hour.

I was ambilavent about Cutler at first, but now think that with the right support, he’s a premier quarterback.

If Barber does not run out of bounds with two minutes left and a 10-zip lead over Denver, and fumble on the very next possession, and if Williams catches a pass at the goal line in another game, I wonder if Angelo would even be gone.  I mean the Bears just gave away 4 games near the end.

Gerald (Jerry) Plummer

Glad to hear, Rod, you'll cheer for the Niners.  I have a story that might apply, however. Annually way back when the Niners played at Kezar Stadium, Golden Gate Park, on opening day as the Niner's kicker's foot met the ball to start the game a large sign unfurled at the west end of the stadium that read "Wait 'till Next Year".  Unfortunately, I suspect this to be the case this year as well.

Of course in the Kezar days you had to work your way through the flower children and others that migrated to the game from the Hashbury but the atmosphere was "stimulating".

Jerry and Rod,

Niners a good team but "Wait 'till Next Year".

Sue might be gone, but The Johnson's keep the signals alive.

I know this is going to sound stupid but I don't get the Christmas Card, Jack

Mrs. Johnson is visiting Mr. Johnson (in orange jump suit) in jail Milan, and signifying his gang.

I trust you've never been to jail, but perhaps you've seen this means of phone/face communication in the movies. :)

You know, the family picture Christmas card..........

Marilyn Evans (Tate)

Sorry Jack, this might burst your bubble. The sign she is giving him is the sign for  "I love you"  in ASL.

(American Sign Language)

She should have given him the big L on the forehead sign.

01/06/12 08:23 PM #2570

Michael (Mike) Franks

I had to Google that one Marilyn. I think you nailed it.

I've never been to jail and orange makes me look fat. (laugh)

01/06/12 11:51 PM #2572

Jack Habich

Marilyn,

The person who sent me the e-mail still says it’s a gang signal, but I think in this particular case, in the spirit of the season and the card, you are probably right.

I’m not up to snuff on ASL or gang signals.  In my travels through Chicago though, I’ve often seen signifying  with one devil’s horn theme or another. The stuff happens so fast, and is connected with other signs, it’s hard to make it out.

In Cook County, the exact signal (front Devil's Horn with thumb out) is also the signal of the Almighty Latin Kings…..and it does not mean “I love you”.  ( [ChicagoGangs.Org] Gang Hand Signs).  In other areas, it’s the sign of other gangs.

Rockers regularly use the devil’s horn as well, as do Italians (without thumb).

Milan,

I think McLean County has dark blue jump suits..much more flattering.

01/06/12 11:57 PM #2573

Jack Habich

Now when and Italian shows you this, it doesn't mean he loves you.....it's a curse, or a dis that your wife is sleeping with another man. When the Devil's horn is flipped south (Sue's preference), it has another meaning.....it's to ward of evil spirits and curses. My late friend Rocco wore one around his neck. In Sue's case and elsewhere, it can also be a gang signal. :)

Hi Jack:

In Texas it means 'gig 'em horns!.

Obviously the sign has different meanings depending on the person sending the message and the person receiving it.

I would identify it as "I Love You" as well.... Marilyn, do you sign?

01/07/12 09:42 AM #2576

Helen Nicolaysen (Thompson)

My husband signs and says, "I love you" is the two middle fingers as shown, however the thumb is out not clutched to the palm!  He had a Deaf Mute Uncle and worked with two Deaf Mutes for 13 years at the Pantagraph.  He also attended signing classes.
