Thoughts on BEER

Sometimes, after playing golf, I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

Babe Ruth

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."

Winston Churchill

"When I read about the evils of drinking after golfing I gave up reading."

"24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not."

H. L. Mencken

"When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep.

When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin,

we go to heaven. So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!"

George Bernard Shaw

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer.

Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."

One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin said to his buddy, Norm Peterson:

"Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this.. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members!  In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

David: Enjoy your beer!  I'll enjoy mine.  It's rootbeer for me!  In a glass or in a float, it will be rootbeer every time!   Have you ever mixed ice cream and rootbeer until it is like a smoothie?   Pretty good and refreshing on a hot day.

We, once again, had a very fun evening of conversation at last nights mini-reunion. With 24 participants there was no shortage of smiles, laughter and sharing of tall tales of the past. As usual, quite a few people that would have been there were unable to attend due to health issues or schedule conflicts. Hope you are able to Join us Aug 21 and 22 for our 80th birthday bash and summer mini-reunion. Be sure to RSVP Sharon Green Leipold if you have not already replied. Let's make it a huge success.

Missed Photos: Sue and Steve Koppenhoefer, Steve and Elaine Jetton and me.

Hey all, once again I enjoyed the photos  and really appreciate the identification under each. I've been in Scotland and won't return to Reno until mid June. Your handsome faces reached clear across the pond. Read your antics daily and enjoy them. Stay healthy.

Thank you to Marvin for the great photos of the gathering at The Windjammer. Our next outing will be August 21 for the 80th birthday party. (It's free, and bring your plus-one.) If you've already replied to Sharon Green Leipold but haven't heard back -- you might re-contact her just to be sure she got your message. See you at the Doubletree on August 21.

In anticipation of Memorial Day, tomorrow, I offer many thanks to all veterans, from the bottom of my heart.  Bless you all!                                                                                                                                                              Linda

Thinking about Bill Buff on this Memorial Day. I'm sure some of you will be doing the same and understand why. Sending thanks to our veteran classmates!!! I found this photograph of Marv marching in the Memorial Day parade on Main Street in 1960. (He is on the far end of the color guard.) Yes, I may be an old hippie, but that has never kept me from admiring those of you who served our country.

Great picture, Mel.  Looks like Marv has shouldered an M1.

That was a lot of weight for a 14yo to be carrying around.  From personal experience  inboot camp, Nam, and my duties upon return (I was responsible for the armory for  Marine Corps Reserve Detatachment in Columbus, OH) I know the weapon weighed in at 9.5 lbs unloaded !.

Way to go, MARV!

Alexander's Steak House, site of this year's Christmas dinner, announced yesterday that they are closing as of May 31. This post is just a reassurance to let you know that your class social committee has been at work on a new venue for our popular December dinner since the news broke. When we get something nailed down, we'll let everyone know.

Meanwhile, everyone have a great summer!

I don't know if it is just me, but for some inexplicable reason, I am filled with nostalgia today. Seeing Dave's reaction to the photo I posted of Marv on Memorial Day, watching the Indy 500 (which I've attended 3 times) on Sunday, the first seasonal gathering of people in my condo last night by the pool, listening nonstop to the aria Vissi d'arte from Puccini's "Tosca", getting ready for my granddaughter's dance recital on Saturday, knowing that we are all in or approacing our 80th birthday, going down the Internet rabbit hole of history, or the surreal dream I woke up to this morning, I am in a state of reflection and emotional la la land. Does anyone else have days like this?

It feels so good and, at the same time, makes me realize how lucky I have been.

Mel:   Those thoughts and dreams can come almost out of nowhere!  Interesting how nostalgia can kick us!
