In the mid '70's I lived in the country outside the small farming community of Farmersville, IL., Pop 500 !
The closest hospital or doctor was 25 miles away and I had 3 young boys. I became the first EMT in Farmersville, and sat on a board that secured a DOT grant to acquire an ambulance. I became th first captain of the Farmersville/Waggoner, Volunteer Ambulance service, served as the captain for 3 years, and served as a volunteer EMT for a total of 6 years until we moved away. In addition I was a Heart Association CPR instructor and taught literally hundreds of people the techniques of CPR. While I never had a CPR save, and I have preformed CPR about 2 dozen times, I taught 2 people who had saves. One saved his dad.
That ambulance seervice is still going strong today, using many of the procedures we developed back in those days.
Later on, I was my sons' scoutmaster and ran the first aid tent at the scout camp.
