Wishing you all a labor free Labor Day.

James (Jim) Rookus

Hope you all had a great holiday today!  Since today was "Labor" Day ... I thought I would spend the AM "Laboring" so prior to the family's last pool party of the season I decided to clean out the gutters which were pretty full of leaves composting!  So that my sons would believe that I spent the morning laboring, Carol snapped this photo to prove it in case it may never happen again!

I really wasn't face down on the job ... just imagine the photo right side up!

Saw a story in the morning Pantagraph that may interest you.  Classmate Dick Briggs is helping restore an F-100 Super Sabre fighter at the Prarie Aviation Center in Blm.  Nice pic and video.

Here's a pic that I got from my s-i-l, taken this morning at 7A in Miller Park.  Thought it was pretty neat.

Maxwell:

Thank you for the photo of Miller Park.  In 2010, the 9 Bristow siblings had their last portrait, made together,on the bridge.  Boy did we look old as Methusala!!!!

4 have since past, and currently, another has one foot on a banana peel.

Love to ya'll.

Max and Linda, thanks for keeping things alive today. Max, the photo of the bridge at Miller Park is beautiful. Linda, sorry to hear about the fragile condition and losses of your siblings. I'm thinking you are one of the youngest, but it is still difficult to accept that we are all aging and vulnerable. Keep the faith and let's ride the merry-go-round as far as we can.

Jim, you look safer on a horizontal ladder that a vertical one. At last check, Marv hasn't fixed it, which is actually pretty cool. Looks like you're napping on the job.

Steve, thank you for the piece on Dick Briggs. Hope he's watching this web site. Anyone who didn't check out the video should do so. It is wonderful to see Dick doing what he loves. And that doesn't count the fact that he, like Dave and so many others of our class, was part of the Vietnam experience that changed their lives.

So, I'll end by adding a photo of my granddaughter last weekend who had the whole pool to herself.

Hugs to all!!!

MAX ... maybe I'm showing my ignorance ... but what is your s-i-l you mention in taking that photo ... ?

MEL... did your granddaughter help you count your laps in the pool?  How many miles are you up to by now?  Any more update on Marv?

Here's an example of how the wealthy Chicago attorneys hang out in Grand Haven over the holidays !  I can only imagine !

You really don't know me very well.  I am the youngest of the 9.  I was also the family 'accident'!

James (Jim) Rookus

MAX ..... so glad you cleared that up ... I was thinking you were in the CIA or something and you were referring to your " Special Intelegence Laison" or something and they were furnishing you satellite images !

LINDA .... being the youngest of nine were you adored, over protected and spoiled by 8 older siblings?

09/10/20 10:26 AM #9199

Linda Bristow (Elias)

Jim Rookus:

Actually all 8 siblings also acted as though they were my parents. Surrounded by older people all of my life made a difference in my outlook on my world.  Example:  I started driving the truck on the farm at age 7.  I don't know about you........but I don't know a 7 year old that I would trust to drive.  I couldn't reach the pedals without a short wooden stilt.    Also, for entertainment in the winter, one of the things we did was dance.  By the time I was 5 I could do all of the dances from my parent's time as well as those from my siblings time.

Hope you have cooler weather where you are!  It is so nice here today!

Linda

Steve, thanks so much for posting the Pantagraph article.

I am one of many "sleeper" followers of the BHS 64 site.

I have enjoyed seeing all of the pictures and recounting the "old" days.

I was in and out of District 87 over my life span.  I went to Emerson 1st and 2nd grade.  I had a big crush on our 2nd grade teacher, but I can't recall her name.

I moved to Downs for 3rd - 6th grades, Normal Central junior high (7th/8th), back to Downs for Fr and Soph years.  Transferred into BHS early fall of junior year.  I also taught Special Education in Dist 87 1973 - 1979.  Over the span, I worked at Washington, Oakland, Bent, Sheridan and Stevenson.

As part of the transfer process my junior year, I remember going to the counselor's office to take tests and paper work.  I was taken down the hall to be introduced to Mrs. Morin's 3rd hour English class.  I sat behind Paul Wade on the far side near the hallway.

Along the window row was Dicksie Collier.  Didn't recognize her, as we were classmates at Emerson.  We just celebrated our 53rd anniversary yesterday (9/9/67) (married 3 weeks after my return from Vietnam)..  The funny part is that she told me that when I was introduced to the class, she thought "Oh Yuck!"  She hated red hair.

Must have won her over with my "charming" personality, or she realized I would lose my hair or it would turn white.  Both actually have taken place.

I'll try to be a little more active.

Dick

Dick, great to see you posting. I hope Dicksie is also getting in on this. Loved reading your story. From the video of you painting the F-100, I'd say your hair looks pretty much intact. I never knew red hair could turn white, but if that makes your wife happy, so much the better.

Jim, I don't usually swim laps when my granddaughter is here because that is play time. Marco Polo, shark attacks, speedboat noises, and the like. I'm up to 65.5 miles, but the cold and rain have shut me down for a couple of days. Even though the water temp was 74 degrees yesterday, I still managed a half mile and was shivering like a leaf in the wind when getting out. Marv got home on Tuesday and Nurse Judy is with him for the next few days. So far he is behaving himself and limited to Zilch, a dice game he and Judy are addicted to.

Linda, tell us more. You are right...I don't know that much about you, but learning that you were driving a truck at age 7 is seriously amazing. Where was the farm?

James (Jim) Rookus

DICK..... I too was a red head.... (lots of ribbing through youth days about that) and also now gray.... although I'm convinced its rather a "dirty blondish color" ... my wife says its my eyes that are the problem!

Are you the guy in the yellow shirt or the navy blue shirt in the Pantagraph article?

MEL....  so proud of you... ALMOST TO YOUR GOAL!!!!  Great JOB!

Mel:

I will be glad to share my background, when I meet with you, at the next mini-reunion that will be allowed.  The farm was in Southern Illinois.  When we moved to Bloomington we leased land and barn for Dad's blasted horses until we purchased a farm south of town on the way to Heyworth.

Dennis Alexander's father knew my father at that time.  Denny and I have always been friends ever since that early age of almost 8.

I am progressing very well with my new hip and am working at getting time to start posting again. It seems it is difficult to give this priority over napping and exercising. Will try to comment later on all of the fun post I have missed. Max's bloom had a similar look to an origami thing I make using dollar bills.

Today was a day of remembrance and reflection... when the USA changed.  As I reflected on what I recall of that day 19 years ago .... news break on a TV screen in a strangers home as my real estate office was touring the new listings of the week ( a weekly Tuesday morning occurrence ).  Our group just froze in disbelief as we watched in someone's living room.

Then later those now famous words " Let's Roll " on flight 93.

A few years ago we visited the flight 93 memorial in Pennsylvania .... a must see if yo are ever near there !  As we walked around and saw the exhibits and outdoor area where the plane went down ...there was a sobering silence among the  hundreds of tourists on sight.  A day we'll never forget !

WE HAVE MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR!!!

Jim, I am in the yellow shirt.  The guy in the blue shirt is a Museum Board member, Mike Herrin (Colfax area).  Mike served in the same unit as Joe Crutcher, but not at the same time.  Mike and Joe participated in the showing of "Scramble the Seawolves" at the Normal theater.  It was Joe's daughter and son-in-law that produced it.  We had a full house for the showing.  The Normal theater is well restored.  Here is a link to the movie.  It was one of the most decorated units in Viet Nam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCBLR8yHdNE

Go to YouTube and Google Scramble the Seawolves if you want more details.

I mentioned that I went to Emerson in 1st and 2nd grade.  I remember Steve Jetton and Jim Ogen was in the class, along with Dicksie.  Here is a picture of Dicksie's birthday party in 2nd grade (May 15th).  Gee, even though I had red hair, she invited me.  WOW!!!  Dicksie and I recognize ourselves (me - left end of 1st row and Dicksie 3rd from left in plaid dress.  Also, in the second row is her cousin, Tim Schmidt.  Dicksie's sister, Nancy, is the tall one in the back row.  Anybody recognize themselves or others?  If so, state the name and position in the picture.

I remember Steve, Kenny Phillips and I spent a lot of time in the principal's office - turned in by the patrol kids for walking on the quarter round sidewalk cement borders.  Also remember the day Steve went to pet a cocker spaniel on Oakland Ave.  It ripped his jeans on the left leg and turned quite purple.  The three of us often went to each others house for lunch.

Dick
