Marv, thanks for correcting me.  I knew better than that.  Speaking of Medal of Honor recipients, one of the men in Steve's platoon was awarded the medal posthumously by President Obama who recognized several people of color who had previously been overlooked.  And yes, it is wonderful that that particular OCS class has a reunion every 3 years in some part of the US.  You also might be interested in knowing since you also served that for the past 6 years starting with 3 guys and finding more each year (total so far of 13) my husband's platoon that served together in Vietnam meet somewhere each October.

TOMORROW'S THEME

A Photo you wish you could recreate!

So you can start thinking about your post for Monday...  Awhile back Wendy suggested "cars" as a subject.  I will go a step farther and make it "Transportation Monday".  Any type of transportation will work.  Could be your favorite tricycle, sports car, or dump truck.  Use you imagination!

This used to be a mountain -- volcano, actually, in some other time. Shiprock, in New Mexico, 1962.

The West is dotted with the formations, remnants of once-active volcanos. Devil's Tower in Wyoming is probably the most shining example. Equally famous is the dirt trail in the foreground. It was part of the final scene in the forties movie, "My Darling Clementine."

The shot below is a view of Monument Valley, Arizona, also in 1962. You've probably seen a lot of movies shot there, and some of them were just as black and white as these two snapshots. As Sandra's subject choice, mountains, goes -- these might be pretty lame. But if you ever get to that part of the country, the memory of this scenery may stay with you for the rest of your life.

Today's Theme - A Photo You Wish You Could Recreate - is a real thinking theme.  There are literally 100s of pictures I've taken that fall into that category.  So let's limit this to 5? or so.  Mel and Jack, I'm sure that in your collections you probably have 1000s that fall into this category.    So, here's the deal, what were you doing, where were you, why would you want to do this photo again, and when.  The four usual questions...What, Where, When and Why.

As Max said, tomorrow is going to be really interesting as some of the transportation that immediately comes to mind I'm not sure there are any photos in my "cloud" of 16k+ pictures that I was able to capture.

Have a great day everyone - looking forward to seeing what you have in mind.

Prayers for your safety and health!

A picture I wish I could recreate:  My husband Alton, who passed in 2005, with my best friend Donna's son Anthony. This was taken in Palm Springs in 1983 when Donna's family was visiting from Novato, CA, where she still lives. And that goofy baby is now a neurosurgeon at UCSF.

This picture was taken 40 years ago.  Sometimes I wish my kids were little again.  The picture was recreated a few years ago.  (Ben wasn't born yet in the first picture.)

This was taken at the southern most tip of South Africa.  It's the only picture I ever entered in a photo contest.  It came in 3rd and was published in a calendar.  I titled it "I Can Fly".   I think it really captures the action of the moment.  I would go back to Africa in a heartbeat.  I fell in love with the country and it's people.  Watched a NETFLIX movie  that captures the essence of Africa.  If you have NETFLIX, I'd recommend  - Holiday in the Wild - stars Rob Lowe and Kristen Stewart - definitely a PG movie with wonderful sunsets and wild creatures - NO SEX - NO VIOLENCE, but for anyone that has ever been there, Africa calls you back.   More To Follow.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Dave, you are so right, this one really made me think. As you said, there are 100s to choose from, some because the photos were so bad, I wanted to do them over again. But you can never recreate the moment, although Sue seems to have done just that with her family. Joan, I loved reading the story about your husband and totally understand why you chose this one shot.

It has been my good fortune to travel to a lot of places, but the "where" is less important than the "who." My daughter and I have made trips to New York, Arizona and Italy together. In 2016, it was a dream come true when my son was able to go to Russia with me. It was the only way he could truly understand my passion for the place and the people. We went mushroom hunting, got lost in the woods, sang folk music, ate and drank unfamiliar foods, and...well you get the idea. I'd do any of those trips again in a heartbeat if I could share them with my son and daughter.

Devon on a massive vertical slope at Canyon de Chelly.

Phil in front of St. Basil Cathedral on Red Square in Moscow.

An afternoon feast at Shestakovo on the Volga River.

Mushroom hunting Russian style.

Mel and I just communicated and exchanged days for the upcoming week.  So for Tuesday,  the theme is TREES.

I don't know what picture to put.  All of the previous posts are very poignant.  I don't seem to have that kind, but I took a trip with my two sisters, which probably won't happen again due to changed circumstances, so I will put that.  Carol was Class of 62 and Anne was Class of 65.  This picture was taken in Estes Park, Colorado, where we used to have a yearly summer trip.

Melvin (Mel) Theobald

Wendy, is that you or Anne with Carol? If it is Anne, you look more like twins than Marv and me.

I don't want to get too far ahead of the curve here since we seem to have shorter memories these days, but someone has a birthday on Wednesday. SO IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY will be the theme.

To recap:

Monday: TRANSPORTATION (Max)

Tueday: TREES (Wendy)

Wenesday: SO IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY (Mel) I'll leave it to Suzi to tell you whose.

Thursday: FUNNY PHOTO (Marv)

Friday: FREE FOR ALL

Old college friends, the morning after a reunion in 1987, saying "cheese" to my camera with a timer, mounted on a tripod. Of these ten people, three are deceased; two couples are divorced, including classmate Marilyn Andersen (front row, left) and myself; one couple is out of the group because of a foolish misunderstanding. It was a great reunion where, for one brief shining moment, we all thought we had recaptured the fun and innocence of our college days at Ohio State.

Well Mel,  I don't think I look like either of my sisters so here is a picture of all three of us.

Wendy, I had to ask. You both look great. Hope Anne is still making art. She was exceptional, as we all were, right?

I cannot resist posting this picture as a picture I would like to recreate even though I did not take it. Besides Wendy, Allida Mel and me (current photo posters) it includes Jim Morin, Holly Rust, Bob Campbell, Mike Maurer, Julie Hart, Anne Wylie, Cheryl McLay and Chuck Jenkins.  It also includes Cathy Quiett, Richard Wilson, Betsie Ahlanius, Bob Bower and Chuck Massie that sadly are no longer with us. I would love to be able to recreate the special things we experienced in those days such as the "chuck wagon bonfires", Christmas tree decorating in the entry lobby, snowball fights and baseball games in the school yard. It was truly a magical time and place in my memory. Some of us go back a long way together considering this picture was taken 65 years ago.

Another time that would be great to recreate was a family reunion for an entire weekend at my house at Heritage Lake near Mackinaw, IL in 2007 where, for the only time, my Mom had her three sons, all of her grand-children and great grandchildren all together.

Mom at 81 playing catch!!! She still had IT!!!

Just adding to Marv's Oakand School post -- great picture. Betsy Ahlenius and Richard Wilson are gone too, sadly.

Janice Kerchenfaut's name is listed, under the picture, as being in the picture. Her married name is on this website and she isn't listed as a missing classmate, so we must know where she is.  I wish she would put a profile on here.  She was in my homeroom and I always liked her and have wondered about her over the years.
