I began college at Illinois Wesleyan, and earned a BM in Flute Performance. Began grad work at New England Conservatory (Boston). Frustrated that I wasn't gettting what I wanted, I transferred to the U of Illinois and got precisely that, earning an MM in Flute. I began my college teaching at Cottey College (PEO college) in Nevada, Mo.
Getting interested in Comprehensive Musicianship, I moved to Madison, WI, where I earned a PhD in Music Theory, with a big interest in World Music and a minor in cultural anthropology. My first day in Madison was also my first day passengering on a motorcycle. After 3 years of that, I began riding my own bike.
Followingr 2 years of teaching at Alverno College (Milwaukee),I began at St. Lawrence Univ. in Canton, NY - very far upstate. Here began my interest and involvement with nearby Mohawk people, which then extended to other Iroquois in Canada and Wisc. I returned to Madison, then on to teaching at UWWC (West Bend). Returned to Madison, with teaching at MATC and my home studio.
In 2003 I moved to Sioux City, IA, and into the home of my elderly mother (quite alert, but not driving and with health problems). In Iowa I got trained to teach motorcycling, which I do most weekends of Iowa's warmer 6 months. Here I taught music at Morningside College, and later in Western Iowa Tech's new and explosive Music Department, plus in my home flute studio. After my mother's passing, I moved back to Wisconsin in December!
FINALLY I am permanently living in greater Madison, WI, area, - out in the country - where I have opened a flute studio, and I will have a couple horses in my 3-horse stable with newly-rebuilt corral out by the road. I have woods, plus lots of sound protection so I never hear the road and the house can't be seen from out there! Biking is great!
Last summer, with no muscle memory at all for string instruments, I began studying the bass viole da gamba (about the size of a cello, but earlier than, and held with the legs, plus with a radically different manner of holding this early type of bow. I enjoy it. I'm also playing ping pong 3 mornings/week, and jogging 4 miles (slowly, on my toes) for air capacity - necessary for a flutist - and general health. Living in a spot which I know will be my permanent home is unbelievable, since I have been moving consistently all my life, and it is joyous.

Like you, I absolutely remember where I was when Kennedy was shot - in P.E., where we all could get towels to cry into!
I sure remember Mr. Ridenour, and I also considered Bill Rusk to be a good friend. It sounds like you've had a rich life, and I'm glad.

Holly, I hope you have a terrific birthday! I'll be in Canada when you have your birthday, then right off to Sioux City, Iowa, where a terrific "joint" facility will do a partial knee replacement and release me after 2 weeks of therapy! I really look forward to the next time we see each other. My next Bloomington gathering may be the wintertime one.
