NORMAL — Terry Lee Detherage, 63, Normal, succumbed to cancer at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday (June 29, 2010) at his home.

Terry was cremated, according to his wishes. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life ceremony from 1 to 4 p.m. July 10 at the Laborers International 362, 2012 Fox Creek Road, Bloomington.

The family asks that attendees feel free to bring a story, either true or made up, and a covered dish to share.

Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family in care of Sue Detherage.

Terry was born Nov. 22, 1946, in Bloomington, the son of Charles and Patricia Dill Detherage.

Terry graduated from Bloomington High School in 1964 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966. Upon completion of training under the legendary Carlos Hathcock, Terry served his country as a scout sniper in A Shau Valley and Con Thien, earning a National Combat Action Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and two Vietnam Campaign Medals, along with a Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in 1972.

He married Pamela Sue Slagel on July 29, 1973, in Funks Grove. He was a laborer with Local 362, helping to build the Bloomington Post Office and the ISU library.

In 1981, Terry and Sue moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Terry became a plumber. In 1992 the family returned to Bloomington. In 1998 Terry purchased and operated the Grand Hotel until it closed.

Terry leaves behind his wife, Sue; and daughter, Lauren Detherage, Normal; and his siblings, Patty (Jim) Sears and Jeff Detherage, both of Bloomington; Karen (Bob) Salvator, Carlock; and Allen (Shawn) Detherage, Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Detherage and Patricia Fisher; and one brother, Mike Detherage.

Terry was a fierce racquetball competitor. He enjoyed deep sea and fresh water fishing, sports trivia, rafting, golf and euchre. He loved all types of music, spicy foods, Stan Musial and the St. Louis Cardinals.
