Comments:

Allied Inst of Tech in Chicago '64-'66. Army Sep '66-Sep '69 including a year in Vietnam (awarded Bronze Star). Career in Engineering '69-'06. Retired Nov 2006.

Married in Dec '68 and divorced in '90. Had a son in '69 and a daughter in '72. Now have 5 grand-children in Texas and New Hampshire.

Lived in Chicago suburbs 10 years after Army and then moved to Texas until 2007. Now at Heritage Lake near Mackinaw, IL and am enjoying the freedom of retirement and doing what I want when I want.

Have been in 47 states and have traveled to many countries (Japan, Thailand, Italy, Germany, France, England, Switzerland, Belize, Jamaica, Mexico, Canada, Vietnam, and others) enjoying the cultures, Scuba diving and sightseeing.

Plan to do a lot more traveling in the coming years.

Have designed and built 3 houses, a barn, a large 2 story garage not to mention dabbling in many hobbies including photography, stained glass projects, woodworking, gardening, and so much more.

Have put up with that crazy twin brother of mine all of these years (you know the one: Mel) and still managed to maintain some level of sanity (I think). We have had great fun over the years and still do.

School Story:

Remember the "Flicker Ball" field? During an intramural game in our Jr year Chuck Jenkins and I collided chasing the football resulting in his dad sewing 21 stitches into my upper lip. I always kidded that Chuck did it to drum up business for his dad (it really was an accident that Chuck probably has long ago forgotten).

At Oakland School in the 6th grade after school one day Anne Wylie jumped on my back and started beating on me. In my effort to defend myself I wrestled her to the ground trying to keep her from hitting me. I was taken to the Princpal's Office while she went home. The reason for her attack on me remained a total mystery to me until a phone conversation I had with her May 2009, 50 years later. I now know that it was for something I supposedly said about her that I think Mel actually said and she thought it was me. Anne brought it up and offered her sincerest applology after 50 years and I feel terrible that she seems to have carried the guilt of that with her for all of these years. For me it has been a great story to tell over the years and a long time mystery that is a treasured memory.

It is thanks to Ron Bess, who made me aware of Vicki’s passing, or I am not sure if we would have learned of this very sad loss. Vicki was so special and so loved by so many in our class. It seems fitting to repeat a couple of messages she posted prior to our 50th class reunion that so nicely expressed her shared love for this class as so many of us do. Rest in peace Vicki!

Happy, Happy 50th everyone!! I hope you have a wonderful celebration! I send warm greetings to all of you…

Bloomington, and BHS will always remain close to my heart, although I very seldom get back to Bloomington, I was recently thinking of how blessed I was as a child and teenager to have spent such important years in a town like Bloomington-Normal surrounded by such wonderful family and friends. So many of you I still have memories of. Some heartwarming, some sad, such as the ones we have lost, and some just downright funny. I can see from the forum that a great sense of humor remains with so many, and I love that!

I only have about a million photos of family and friends and will try to gather some up to put on my profile. With 5 children and 10 grandchildren, just imagine!

Hugs to all my 1964 graduating classmates….have fun…we really are not too old to have fun!

Have a great time at the class reunion….I’m still digesting the thought that it has been that long since we walked the halls of good old BHS!

Sue Ellen Barber, lovingly known to those around her as Suzy, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 12th, 2024, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Suzy was born on May 2nd,1946 in Bloomington, IL.  After college, she married the love of her life Bruce Barber, and their adventure began.  Bruce and Suzy moved to East Lansing, Michigan where Suzy spent the next 15 years working as an Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Family Practice at Michigan State University.  She became an avid Spartan fan, especially basketball.  She also took on her favorite role, becoming a mom to their children Christine and Greg.

In 1984, Bruce and Suzy decided to trade in their snowshoes for flipflops and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida which was the perfect place for their young family.  Suzy loved walking on the beach and finding sharks teeth, tandem bike rides, traveling to the Keys, and opening up their home to family and friends.  She also landed her dream job and dedicated over 30 years to the PGA Tour, where she served as Manager of Competitions & Membership at The Champions Tour. Suzy built amazing friendships with her colleagues at the Tour, various Tournament Directors, the Senior Tour Golfers as well as their families, and traveled to many amazing golf tournaments throughout the United States.  The PGA TOUR Champions Tournament Association annually presents the Bruno Award, named in Brian “Bruno” Henning's honor, to an individual or organization who has made outstanding contributions to the Tour, and Suzy was the first female recipient of this award.

To know Suzy was to love her.  Her infectious smile, outgoing personality, and amazing outlook on life touched everyone around her.  She was always up for an adventure, especially if it included family.  Her 60-year relationship with Bruce was and continues to be an inspiration to others.  Suzy was an exemplary role model to her children and grandchildren.  Her fun-loving attitude made her the best “Mimi” her grandchildren could ask for.  She never missed a chance to spend time with them and was their biggest cheerleader. Suzy’s positive outlook on life and strength exuded to the very end.

Suzy is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bruce; her daughter Chris, her husband Steve and their two daughters Kyleigh and Addison; her son Greg and his two sons Austin and Asher; her sister Judy Miller; lifelong friend Judy Winquist; multiple nieces and nephews; and many other friends and family members who will miss her dearly.

“Suzy’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, she is loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure.”

Regarding an obituary for Allida, I just called Jim to offer my condolences and asked about an obituary. He said it was her wish to not have one. She just wanted to be thought of in the memories of those that knew her. She will certainly continue to be remembered.

April 29, 1946—Jan. 29, 2023

BLOOMINGTON — Cheryl A. Welch, 76, of Bloomington, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Paul Welch, with whom she shared 24 years of marriage before his passing in June 2004.

Cheryl was born April 29, 1946, to R.C. and Dodie Wombacher of Peoria, IL. She was raised in Bloomington after the Wombacher family relocated their Anheuser-Busch beer distributing business, B & J Sales. Cheryl was a 1964 Bloomington High School graduate and went on to study education at Illinois State University, earning her bachelors degree in 1969. She began her career as a speech pathologist in Tazewell County before pursuing her interest in sales. She sold advertising for the Pantagraph, then took on a sales role at B & J Sales. In addition, she did some modeling for local businesses.

Cheryl’s most cherished job, however, was being a mother to her two children. She loved being involved in her kids’ school activities and sports. She was very creative, oftentimes crafting family Halloween costumes. She enjoyed decorating for the holidays, hosting get-togethers, and cooking. She was an amazing mother and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughter, Carrie (Brandon) Welch of Normal; her son, Reed (Heather); and grandchildren: Olivia and Jack Welch of St. Louis; and her brother, Bobby Wombacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Welch; and parents, R.C. and Dodie Wombacher.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Beck Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Brain Foundation (www.americanbrainfoundation.org); or The Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

I am very sad to learn that Betsy has passed. It was my good fortune to have been able to talk with Betsy by phone in August of 2009 in an attempt to encourage her to join us at the 45th class reunion. Her husband was seriously ill then and she was unable to come. At the time she was working at a prison, but, in what capacity I do not know. I remember what a nice conversation we had and being extremely impressed with her. When Betsy left the Decatur City Council I lost contact with her and failed in numerous attempts to locate her in the following years. Her accomplishments were very significant and her courage and determination to make this a better world are obvious. I regret having not been able to have more contact with this very special classmate.
