Rodney (Rod) Hayes

Judy,

I lived one house over from the corner of Grove & Robinson on the North Side.  I remember Ron Smith Printing.  The son took it over after his dad retired.  The fire may have included the lumber yard, but there was a large warehouse right next to it that stored materials for miniature golf courses.  What a blaze.  The really big fire that lasted only a short time, but burned forever, was the matress company over near Eureka Williams.  I lived near there and it was quite a site.  Jack, I recall a union office near the flower store also.  It may have been the Operating  Engineers Local at that time.

FYI for everyone who knows Terry Snow.

I got an e-mail last night.  I knew he was going to have some shoulder surgery.  When he went in yesterday to get paper work done, he got a not so good surprise.  Right on the spot, he was admitted into the hospital due to having a Widow Maker.  That's what they call a full and complete blockage of the left anterior descending coronary artery.  It is somewhat rare, but at the same time, it is brutally lethal and if not treated within minutes, can cause a massive heart attack, and death is certain. He had two stents put in and most likely will have a bypass in the near future.  I'll find out more tonight and give and update tomorrow.

Maybe not good news for Terry but great that he was there when this happened. God bless Terry. What ever happened to Diane Snow?

Regina Martin's dad, Jack, owned the restaurant at the corner of Grove and Robinson. I had a crush on her in jr. high and walked her home to the restaurant after choir practice. They lived on Arlene Dr. then but we'd have a Coke and she would go home with Dad.

WOW!  Thank you so very much letting us know about Terry.  Please share with him that he is in our prayers.  We're so glad they caught it in time.  My husband had a similar scare last summer, but with surgery, he is fine now.  He had an Abdominal Aorta Anurysm. Scary stuff but fortunately he was in the right place at the right time.  Please keep us posted on Terry's progress.

If I remember right there were two businesses in the building that Hedricks Flowers was in.  I sure don't remember any office between Front and Washington and I have lived within a four block area of there my whole life.  If it was at 105 N. Clinton it must have been in the very early 50's.  I can't even remember a building that would have had a business in it in that block.

Rod, yes I knew that Dave Smith took over the business when his dad retired.  I went out with him a few times in high school.  He came and talked to my mom about buying our house when she was ready to sell as he already owned the property next door.  When we moved her in 1997 he bought our house.  Then they moved the business or at least part of it and didn't expand down the block so don't know if they sold those homes or what but my brother and his wife know the girl who lives in our old house and she has totally remodeled it and knocked down the old garage and built a new two car garage.  She is very good friends with the people who now live in the Shoups old house.  My brother and his wife got to go thru both houses a couple of years back.  He showed me pictures and the house looks really different.

Keep the information coming about Terry, Rod.

Whatever office I walked in and out of on Grove by the flower shop etc., I went back to and got a Teamsters card.  This allowed me to drive a truckload of guys out east on Rte. 9 bright and early every morning, where I dropped them off. They beat the concrete with jackhammers, sledgehammers and picks all day, and I drove them back at about 4:30 p.m.  The pay was good.

Could it have been a Labor Hall?

09/29/11 09:14 PM #2021

Jack Habich

No, the labor hall was like on south Center or somewhere, and they were called the Hod Carriers.  I was in that one also.  That was run by Don Penn's father.  That was a hub of activity every morning with people looking for work.

The place where I got the Teamsters card was quiet and serene.

I would meet the laborers every morning wherever we parked our State trucks.  The guys would jump on the back bed, I did a head count, I would fire that baby up, and off we went.

I found it in the 1977 city directory. The Teamsters was above Hedrick's Flowers on Grove St.

What you really wanted to show Cheryl, is how you could put your very own picture on the Message Board....... like a big girl.  Outstanding work!

Milan,

Di Snow was married to Jim Fry and they had two boys, Mike and David.  My wife and I ran with Jim and Di while they were married.  They were divorced quite some time ago.  Neither remarried for a long time.  When my Dad passed in '09', Jim was the first person I saw at the wake, so we had some time to talk.  It seemed as though he was considering getting married again.   Jim of course lives there in B/N, and Di worked for Bloomington Fed forever.  A few years back Di remarried a guy named Terry, who is either a Lt. Colonel or Full Bird in the Marine Corps, and living in North Carolina.  I'm not sure if they live at Camp Lejeune or off base.

Terry Snow Update:

Terry is a lucky guy.  He had been through so much surgery the past couple years on his knees that he just needed a rest.  When he was told his shoulder, (which caused severe pain), needed surgery, he decided to put it off until he went on a cruise, since the rehab would be lengthy.  Back home, he finally decided to get the shoulder fixed.  In the state of Tx., if you have had any kind of heart problem, which Terry had in the past, you are reqired to get an OK from a Cardiologist.  Well, he failed the stress test almost immediately.  So they did a cath and found the blockage.  He is now home with (2) stents, rest, a very, very strict diet, and enough blood thinners & aspirin to choke a horse.  Like his wife said, if he cuts himself, he will bleed to death.  Not his cup of tea, but it beats the alternative.  This will be for the next 30 days at least.  Then we'll see.  At least he's in good hands.  His wife is an RN and worked in the OR for years.  For now, things are under control.  Di and my wife talk a couple times a week, so if there is any change, I'll relay it on.

Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear Terry is home and recovering.  As long as he follows doctors orders, and the fact that his wife is a licensed nurse displays that he has everything working on his side.  We'lll continue to keep him in our prayers!  Thank you for keeping us updated Rod!

Cheryl, I don't even need to turn on my speakers to hear what you call me.

Nevertheless, I'm amazed how you got the picture just in the right place and everything.  This required skills equal to Gina's photography.  Good job.

Also, after seeing that picture, I decided to call Gina at the number given to arrange for a family portrait.  A gruff guy answered the phone and said she hadn't been there in 40 years..  Said she moved to 105 N. Clinton.

Terry (Max) Maxwell

Jack... LOL!  Good one!  I thought maybe Jetton bought 105 with his extra cash and tore it down to put in tennis courts.

Have been gone for a couple days and just catching up on the news here.  Rod, tell Terry Snow I'm thinking about him.  Speaking of him and going way back like most of you do... I remember when he bought either a Plymouth or Dodge, dark blue, with the push button shifter.  Maybe around a '64? We went down whatever the street is on the north side of Lakeside CC, and he put his foot through the carburator and started punching buttons.  We must have been going 70 by the end of the block.  Threw me back against the seat and kept me there.  I was in awe of that car for a long time.

Rod... you mentioned that you had a '64 Vette.  When I started teaching, one of the first things I bought with my hard-earned money was a '67 Vette.  It was the first car I owned that could do what Terry's car did to me a few years earlier.  Funny how this Forum brings back so many memories.  Sure wish I still had that car.

Victor, if I lived any closer I'd have to check into Bro-Menn (probably Brokaw and Mennonite to you lol) to deal with my injuries.

Maybe you came from Bloomington, MN.  There was a woman just a couple of days ago who e-mailed through this web site and wanted her name added to the list.  "Who are you"? I asked her.  "Who are you"? she asked me.  Turns out she is originally from BHS alright, but Bloomington, MN.  Now, I have a new penpal and am learing how cold it was at the Vikings games in the old stadium and that they had 999 people in their class.
