This may be worth a chuckle:

MLB player shows up for Sunday services.  After the service, on the way out, the Pastor tells him it was great to see him, and hopefully he'll attend more.  The player said, well, I work a lot on Sundays. The Pastor says, I work almost every Sunday, but I'm in the right field.  The player responds, me too. Doesn't the sun get in your eyes a lot.

Dave-- Knowledge/Wisdom  It can be a bit confusing at times. Just enjoy the fruits of the season.

Dave:

I do enjoy the fruits of summer.   My favorite, when I can find them, are the Dole brand, large strawberries with the long stems.  I have several recipes that I can use to make wonderful, beautiful desserts or snacks!

I know we're under the Heat Bubble for the next couple of days, and many Raiders are thinking it's too hot to mow the lawn, so here's another thought - or NOT...

Husband and Wife Bantr:

'It's just too hot to wear clothes today,' Jack says as he stepped out of the shower. '

Honey, what do you think the neighbors would think if I mowed the lawn like this?'

'Probably that I married you for your money,' she replied.

MEETING MARVIN IN TEXAS, 10 YEAR OLD GRANDSON WAS ALL STAR BASEBALL LEAGUE PITCHER THROWING 70 MPH. 9 BALLS AND 18 BATS LATER, MARVIN MADE MICHAEL THIS BASEBALL BENCH. WHEN HE DELIVERED BENCH HE MOUNTED MY DINNER BELL IN 100 DEGREE HEAT. THANK YOU MARVIN, 1964 CLASSMATE ONE OF THE BEST!

Mary, Marv is a mechanical engineer. He just can't help himself when faced with a challenge. For any of you Raiders 64 folks with a problem or project, just call Marv. He can do anything.

Jim, UFOs are actually modern day sports stadiums. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the only people who go there are aliens. So glad you stayed in your car.

Dave, your humor has no limits. I'm pretty sure I knew some of the people who went to those churches. All very funny and poignant.

I hope everyone gets it, but this is my contribution for today:

OK,

Today's thought - straight up - and perhaps lacking humor but filled with truth.....

Dave Long has brought a much needed sense of levity to all of us. It would be fun if more of you jumped on the bandwagon. It's been said that humor is the best medicine, and at this age it sure would help if there was more of it. That is an invitaton to all you Raiders '64 followers to open up and make us laugh a little, just like Dave, Jim, Sandy, Marv and others have been doing. Any takers? I bet Rod Hayes has some good material.

George Burns, who was in the movie Oh God with John Denver, once said, "The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible."

Regina (Sue) Petersen (Koppenhoefer)

Mel, I actually laughed out loud when I read your Honeymooners joke!  We always watched that show when I was young.

Some sad news....Helen Nicolaysen Thompson passed away in Colorado earlier this week.  I haven't seen an obituary yet.  Helen was a very good friend of mine.  We started kindergarten together at Bent School and spent a lot of time together as kids.

Sue, glad you liked the cartoon about sending Alice to the moon. Timing is everything and having learned from Marv today about Helen's passing made my previous posts seem inconsequencial. So sorry for the loss of your friend. She and I exchanged some private communications a couple of years ago and she was wonderful.

Next Saturday's mini-reunion is one of those amazing opportunities for all of us to get together. Please be there if you can. Time is fleeting and every time we get together matters. I write this with a heavy heart tonight. Marv will post more when he has the details. RIP Helen Nicolaysen Thompson.

Sandra Jeakins (Singletary Sizemore)

Sue, I'm so sorry to hear about Helen. She and I were friends all during grade school, also.  The last I saw her was in 2009 at the 45th reunion.  I was pretty shy at that  reunion and didn't talk much to her, which I've regretted since.  I didn't start to come out of my of shell until after my husband, Jim, died in 2013.  I'm so grateful you and I have gotten together a few times and am so happy to see you everytime I get to.

Marvin, that bench is great!  I'm so glad Mary posted those pictures of it and you.

I enjoy the jokes, also.  As they say, laughing is good for the soul.

Along with Mel, I hope to see those that can come to Cheeks next Saturday night.  Hint:  that is also the twins birthdays, so you can come and wish Marvin and Mel both a happy birthday.

Marv...  What a creative bench !  You are amazing !

Mary ... With that large dinner bell on your front porch, do you feed the whole neighborhood ?

Let's hope more Raider 64 members will come back on line

and include humor, photos of family, or anything that comes

to mind... keep those minds active !

I've always heard that laughter helps ad years to one's life !

Helen reached out to me many years ago.  I was so pleased that she did.  She had a great result and was so pleased with her outcome.  I retired from being a Mediator, but I still come out of retirement from it once in a while.

Helen was a sweet person and a wonderful human being.  I pray she Rests in Heavenly Peace!

2 upcoming birthdays on the same date???

I wonder who that coule be?

Wait - I know - and I also know who is a few minutes (7) older.

Maybe we can just start calling out "hey senior!"  or "hey junior!"  when we get together.  Thoughts?

Of course that follows getting to the 'early bird special' for dinner.

Funny Quotes and Jokes

Some of my friends from around the country / world communicate with me on a very regular basis.  A majority are golf buddies, some are poker buddies from a past existence, some are guys that I have met through my work travels or just travels.  Almost every day I receive a quip or joke from these guys {there is only one lady in the group}.  The point is, everyday there is something to look forward to in my email beyond messages from the kids, the VA or financial stuff. While quite a bit of the jokes or sayings are not the type I would share with Raiders, some are and I hope the ones I choose are not offensive to anyone.  My group of friends are both Dark Red and Dark Blue and I would not venture to share their insights with you.  My thoughts about the information they share is, no matter to which way you lean - it's better to know your friendemies.

That's a LONG (pun) way to say I hope I haven't of won't offend anyone.

Dave

Time for another cup of coffee and watch the golf tournament.

Today's Adventure:

I was fortunate enough to go on 3 R&Rs during my 22+months in Nam.

The first one was to Kuala Lumpur where I lucked out and met a beautiful Malaysian young lady that adopted me for the week.  Her father was an officer in the Malaysian armed forces and the family treated me like a valuded guest.  Got to see many sites that were not on the standard iteneary of Marines on leave.

The second was back to Bloomington for 30 days before going back to start my 2nd tour.

The third was to Taipei, Taiwan.  As luck would have it, after being bumped off my first choice flight to Australia (actually escorted off the plane) and then bumped off the flight to Hawaii, I ended up sitting in the jump seat with the flight attendents from Danang to Taipei.  To say the flight crew took care of me for the 1st 3 days of my stay would be an understatement and then they turned me over to the incoming flight crew for the next 3 days.  The pilots from both flight crews were both ex-military pilots and after hearing my tail of woe, insisted that we sitesee together with the crew.  Amazing experience and at age 22 the 1st time I had ever been in a 5 star restaurant - remember scene with Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman? - too many forks and knives.  That was me in this restaurant on a hillside overlooking the city.

So why am I mentioning this?  Well it goes with today's cartoon.

The majority of my buddies that went on R&R came back with tatoos.  I missed that opportunity due to luck / good fortune.
