Boo: So very sorry to hear about your injuries. Hope the pain is somewhat under control. It is bad enough being in the hospital but to be away from home in the hospital is no fun. I hope your recovery goes smoothly.

Suzi: I hope your surgery went well on Thursday and that it will be a success.

Hugs and prayers to both Suzi and Boo and to Dave Uban’s family and friends. Do not like loosing classmates and friends.

Marv: Congratulations on your great granddaughter. Being a grandparent is the best. Hope you get to meet her soon.

Boo and Suzi Update

I was able to talk to Boo this afternoon and Suzi's husband Dave a few minutes ago.

Boo slipped and fell on a concrete driveway Monday evening and suffered a fractured pelvis, elbow and thumb and a black eye. She is on morphine which is keeping the pain under control. Boo was being transferred from the hospital in Naperville, IL to a rehab center where she is expected to remain for about six weeks. They will not allow visitors including her husband who is also Dave. She will be very hopeful to get phone calls to help get her through this nightmare ordeal. If you wish to call her contact me and I will give you her phone number. I assume she will not have internet access during her rehab stay.

Suzi had back surgery yesterday at St Francis Hospital in Peoria. The doctors expected the surgery to last about six hours. The first vertebrae they fused allowed others they planned on fusing to move into place eliminating the need to fuse others they planned on fusing. This minimized the surgery reducing it to three hours and further trauma. The doctors are "cautiously optimistic" about her recovery. Until she has recovered from the trauma of the surgery it is unknown if her back pain has been corrected. She was sitting in a chair today and took a couple of small steps from the chair to her bed. She is permitted to have up to two visitors. Her room is 3418 if you wish to visit her. She will be there at least two or three more days before transferring to a rehab facility.

I have tried to reach Carol Trenary Logsdon to see how she is recovering from her back surgery a few weeks ago. Also, Alan Swartz had some major surgery July 23 and I would like to know how he is doing. If anyone can update us it would be greatly appreciated.

Very concerning issues and I sincerely wish all of you a speedy recovery.

Below is a letter from the sons of Jean Holcomb that may interest some of you:

As many of you know, in the last couple of months Mom has had shingles, eye surgery, and lost many bottom teeth (working toward bottom dentures).  She is doing well with all because she is tough.

With all that, we have some good news--fully vaccinated individuals can now visit at any time.  Visitors must wear face coverings while in the facility (you can take them off in Mom's room in order to communicate).  You will also have to fill out and sign a "covid sheet" and have your temp taken at the front desk.

Mom is in memory care unit called My Tapestry.  You will go thru the facility and past the assisted living dining area to a set of double doors.  Past those double doors is a buzzer on the wall you press and will be let in.  You may have to push this button a couple of times.  Staff will have to let you out too.  If it is nice weather, and you would like to push Mom outside to sit for a few minutes --just let the staff know. There is a patio area out the back of My Tapestry and back out thru the doors by the assisted living dining area.

You don't need to stay for a long time with Mom, 20 to 30 min is great.  She would love to have a cup of coffee with ya (have the aides get it) and eat a piece of soft chocolate (no nuts, carmel, or anything else--just chocolate).

You can visit any time, I would say the best time to visit is mid-morning but the evenings get lonely too and a short visit around six o'clock she would appreciate.  Weekends get long for her too as there is less staff and activities in the facility.

Mom is done with breakfast around 0900, lunch is normally 1200 to 1245, and dinner 1700 to 1745.  She has standing hair appt on Fridays at 1000.  We also still have doc and dental visits to go but they are never ending.  You can always call me ahead of time to see if we are out and about.  760-583-9714

She still enjoys cards and letters.  Her address again is:

Jean Holcomb

Luther Oaks

601 Lutz Road #12

Bloomington, IL  61704

Again, thanks for all your support and friendship for Mom.

John and Larry

Marv: Thank you for the update on Boo and Suzi. I think it is ridiculous that the rehab facility won’t let Boo’s husband visit her during her 6 week stay. That seems very cruel that they can’t see each other during that time. I do feel bad for both of them. So glad that Suzi didn’t need as much surgery on her back as previously thought. I sure hope this surgery helps her. Being in constant pain is definitely no fun. My prayers and thoughts are with both Boo and Suzi for a smooth recovery and that they are better than ever when their ordeals are over.

the pics of the reunion were great.  looks like everyone had a great time.  i would guess not too many other classes have mini reunions thruout the year.

glad suzi's surgery went better than expected - hope that means a speedier recovery.

boo - sorry about your accident and hope everything is mending well.  and hopefully no impact on your previously operated on foot.

sorry to hear about dave uban - he was always a sweetie pie.

I was fortunate enough to speak to Boo.  She sure has a long road to go yet.  I wish there was something more that I could do for my old friend!  I will keep calling her.

What about Suzi Denton?  I was happy to hear that the surgery wasn't as extensive as they thought it would be.  Does anyone know when she might be going home?

Good luck and Blessings to both!

Linda

Dave, Suzi's husband, informed me yesterday that Suzi had transferred from the hospital in Peoria to Heritage Manor in Bloomington. She will be in quarantine for two weeks and the plan is for her to be at Heritage 18 days. That is all I know at this time but hopefully she will go home pain free and able to get around on her feet.

Alan Swartz Update

Helen Nicolayson Thompson called me this morning and gave me an update on Alan Swartz. He had major heart surgery and was in hospital recovery for almost four weeks. He is now home and improving with a long recovery road ahead. He is said to be in good spirits with a very positive attitude. My best wishes to Alan and Carol as they progress through what have been and continue to be very trying times.

Boo Baxter Whirrett Update

I just called Boo and she unfortunately is back in ICU at the hospital with an infection in her broken (not just fractured) pelvis. Her pelvis break is not able to be operated on and has to heal naturally. Her pain is totally under control thanks to morphine but she also has low blood pressure that they are trying to correct. One bright spot is that Dave can visit her in the hospital which he was not able to at the rehab center. She is asking for your prayers as she goes through this terribly difficult situation.

She does not know how long she will be in the hospital, but she will return to the rehab center once the infection is cleared and her blood pressure is under control.

Updates on Terri "Boo" Baxter Whirrett and Suzi Denton Merritt

Boo was transferred from the hospital back to the rehab center Friday after battling an infection that settled in her broken pelvis. The infection is under control and she is continuing her rehab.  In addition to the broken pelvis, she has a broken right elbow and a broken left thumb which has her unable to use her hands for much of anything. Boo had a very rough past week but hopefully is on the road to recovery. The therapists have had her on her feet and taking a few steps. She would greatly appreciate your prayers. Her address is:

Thrive of Fox Valley

Terri Whirrett,  Room 3004

4020 E New York St

Aurora, IL 60504

Suzi fell a few days after her surgery and while it will not require any additional surgery it has set her progress back somewhat. She is not walking yet and her progress is slow with no indication at this point how long she will be in rehab. It is not clear whether the surgery has succesfully elimiated back pain is gone. Hopefully she will be on her feet very soon and be able to be home. Suzi is allowed visitors at this time. Her address is:

Heritage Manor

Karen Merritt, Room 166

700 E Walnut St

Bloomington, IL 61701

Marvin asked me if I knew how Boo Boo Baxter got her nickname.

I remember, in Junior High, that she got a kick out of how Yogi Bear would say, OK Boo Boo, in a deep voice.

If I remember correctly, I think Ernie (Nancy Prillaman) was the first one to call her Boo Boo.  Soon, many of us were calling her Boo.  My daughter always got a kick out of me mentioning my old school chum, Boo Boo Baxter.

Do any of our classmates remember any other way that we began calling her Boo Boo?

Love to all, Linda

Update on Alan Swartz

I just talked with Alan. He is recovering from open heart surgery and is getting stronger every day. He is doing therapy from home and is now walking up to 400 feet at a time. It has been and continues to be a very long slow recovery process. Alan was telling me he did what he called pre-op therapy to get in shape for the surgery and felt it was a tremendous benefit to his recovery. He says Carol is doing well also.

I wish Alan, Suzi and Boo the best as they continue recovery from these trying events.
