Quick note...  This is an appropriate day for this discussion because today is National French Fry day.

I agree with Dave on places to get a burger and fries with one addition.  The Gag (aka Steak n Shake) was the place to go.  From the one on Hannah St. to the one on Main St. in Normal... and back again and again!  Parkview was was my place for pork tenderloins instead of burgers.  One more place for burgers was Green Gables up at Lake Bloomington.  It is still there so I try to hit it when visiting Bloomington.  The Parkview burned down a few years back, but now rebuilt and back in business.  May have to check it out next time I'm in town.  For some reason, I'm getting hungry.

Green Gables!  Great call, Max. The Gables was the perfect spot to stop when fishing or snipe hunting at the lake.

Never knew Steak n Shake was called the Gag.  Is that a "guy thing"?  I used to go to Hubbard's Cupboard. also liked the root beer place on Towanda, I think.  Was it a Dog and Suds?

not a high school memory, but later we went to a place near Lake Bloomington called Charlie's.  Near Kappa.  My catfish fix when visiting the Midwest.

No Wendy, everybody used to call Steak N Shake "the gag".   Liz and I took my Dad to work and she and i would "tool the gag" by driving thru the Steak N Shake on North Main St and the one on Hannah.  Back and forth.  There would be a long line parading thru the lots.   I didn't work and looking back, as tight with money as my Dad was, I'm so surprised he would let us do that and not worry about the gas we used.  Of course, I didn't think a thing about the gas we were using.

Mentioning Charlie's in Kappa, brought back memories.   My Mom and Dad and I would go there and get the steak for two, and made it for three.  I also got to have a virgin cocktail while we waited for our food.  I always felt so grown up when we went there.

On my bucket list of places to go this summer is Green Gables.  Can you believe I've never been there?!   But I've always heard such good things about their food.

Hubbard's Cuboard (the correct spelling) was a favorite place for me because my Mom worked there as a waitress.  She worked with Milan Jackson and Steve Brienen, also.  They had great food and I miss that place.  Although you didn't ask about pizza, but for pizza it had to be Casella's Pizza.  It was great and I miss that place, also.  Bob Singletary did the mural's on the walls.  Made you feel like you were in Italy.

I was going to mention pizza last night, but thought maybe it would be another day's discussion.  My favorite pizza in Bloomington is Lucca Grill.  Second would be Tobins.  Casella's pizza was good beck in the high school  days.  Lucca's is hard to top for me.  I know Mel agrees because we've had this discussion.  When I go to B'ton I can't leave town without stopping there.  Problem is... I don't get there very often.

I have vivid memories os shining up the car and driving back and forth between the 2 Stk & Shks  ...  usually with Dan Woodard & Bill Rusk in tow!  Spent more time driving and money on gas than eating .... but their burgers fries and malts were hard to beat.  Even today when I drive past our local St & Shk between 2-5 when shakes are half price ... hard to resist a choc malt with double malt added!  Are either if those two locations in B'ton-Normal still open?

Never had to worry too much about gas.  Worked at the Purple Martin station where gas was $.22 per gallon except when the gas war was going on and it dropped to $.19 per gallon.  The guys that worked there got a 10% discount so we were in tall cotton when it came to having enough gas to drive the round trip between Steak n Shakes.

Dog n Suds brings back memories.  The guys on the track team probably remember a bad habit I had after running the mile.  It seems that I would have to vomit some blood.  I was never really up to speed in our senior year.  Anyway, a week after graduation I stopped by the Dog n Suds on the way home and ate 2 chili cheese dogs and a drank a root beer float.  I ended up in Brokaw that night receiving emergency an appendectomy.  Took a while for my taste buds to welcome back a chili cheese dog.

Monical's Pizza on a poker night?  Crust so thin you could see throuh it and cut into bite size squares....Definitey can't compete with LUCAS, but it filled the tank when needed.

Anyone remember the pizza place in Champaign / Urbana that was closed by the helath department?  I think it was a Shakey's and they were closed down for using dog food as. the Italian Sausage.  Glad I wasn't on campus then.

Catching up on stained glass.  This is stained glass behind the alter at Church of the Ascension in Overland Park, KS.  While we're distancing ourselves from the Mass, we are able to watch it online.  Anyway, we were able to purchasse these windows from a church in Missouri that was being torn down.  Very happy we wer able to safe these from distruction:

THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST INTO HEAVEN

BE NOT AFRAID, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS

ON THIS ROCK I SHALL BUILD MY CHURCH - PETER WHO DENIED CHRIST 3 TIMES

Jim, Liz and I didn't eat there either.  Just spent hours driving from one place to the other.   I wonder why we thought that was fun?   ha-ha    Just the "in" thing to do, I guess.  And to watch to see who we could see.

David, I love Monical's pizza, too.   And Tobin's.   Parking is bad to pick up a pizza at Lucca Grill, but I like  them, too.   It's been years since I've had their pizza.  At that time, they had another building on Empire and Linden and it was easier to pick up an order.   They closed that place and I haven't been to the original place in years.

I like Avanti bread, but their pizza, not so much.

I have enjoyed all the stain glass windows.  They are all beautiful.  David L, so glad your church saved those windows.   That is wonderful.

One of the places call for an easy 1.5 mile walk / hike and while it looks wonderful, doubt I'll be makeing the trek.

ENJOY!

Jim... You asked if either of those Steak n Shakes are still open.  No they aren't, but there are 3 or 4 others now in Bloomington-Normal that are open the last I knew.  The one in Normal was the original Steak n Shake that started it all out for Gus Belt, the founder.  When they closed, they sold the building and now I believe it is a  Monicals.  Someone from town can correct me if I'm wrong.

Dave...  Avanti's had the best sandwiches, agree that their pizza wasn't all that good.  Went there a few years ago when my youngest brother was home from Seattle.  It was one of his college hangouts and we went there for lunch to rekindle old memories.  Also agree that all the best pizza I've had has very thin crust and is cut in squares.  "Down with thick crust pie-shaped pizza!!!" (at least when I have a choice.)

Interesting Max... I did not know that the ORIGINAL Steak & Shake was the one on Main ST in Normal.  To think how large the franchise is now and it all started in our back yard!  Does anyone know what year that first one opened?

Jim...

Just googled it... February 1934 in Normal, IL.   A little before our time.

Many have closed recently.  62 corporately owned stores have closed... not sure if temporary or for good.  We had a couple in WI, one fairly close to me.  They both closed over 5 years ago and both buildings were razed and the land sold.

We have a Wattaburger, a Whalburger, a Smashburger, a Shake Shack, a Burger Fi, all of which are good, but I'm still waiting for an In and Out Burger to get this far east.

Speaking of Dog n Suds, it brought back several memories. One of which was in the summer of my junior or senior year (it has been so long ago I can't remember exactly) we had a neighbor that was in advertising. He was doing an TV video for Dog n Suds and needed someone about my age. He asked my parents and I agreed to do it.  They filmed Al Pizzmalio and me in a convertible smiling to the song, Put on a Happy Face. Crazy!

And 55+ years later we find out we have a TV personality among us!  Let us know when we can see you in "rerun commercials" Judy!

Max, luckily I don't think we will ever see any reruns of that commercial!

Jack K,, thank you for the picture and article about my father. That was a new picture and article of him for me. It is alwalys nice to be reminded and learn new things about the people in our lives that we have lost..

Judy, took a little time and a little browsing but I was able to come up with......

Absolutely nothing in either 1963 or 1964 Dog n Suds TV commercials.  There are some vintage pictures out there, but no video.

BN food –

Oh yeah, Lucca Grill is legendary.  The “A la Baldini” was the best pizza ever.  I can’t remember the name of the gal that made them for years …. but I don’t think it was ever quite as good after she died.

In the 70s I worked in State Farm’s art deco downtown home office and we’d often lunch at Lucca.  The waitress …. darn it! can’t remember her name either, but she was awful because she could not keep track of when people came in, so getting serviced was a frustrating lottery.  The Steak on Dago was the classic g o to.  So good!  Again, I think it deteriorated a bit as time passed.  My buddy Alan and I always had a beer.  Felt like you were getting by with something.  SF had a pretty stiff necked “official” attitude about alcohol.  Fridays called for two beers.

And then there was Suzi’s Café on Front St.  Recall the Buford boys from our HS days.  Suzi was a work of art …. you had to be there?  Jeff Secord once complained – in a quiet voice - about not getting a requested substitution on the blue plate special.  She was in the back of the café and somehow miraculously hearing his complaint bellowed out that if you don’t like it he didn’t have to eat here.  In fact, she decided, you’re banned for coming in here for the next two weeks!  Ha! Ha!  What a depravation.

The gag – fav was chili mac.  Got a recipe that’s a perfect knock off.  I think I may have posted it several years ago.  Easy, except she specified “must be Brooks ketchup,” which is hard to find.  Meijer in Normal has it.  Once I tasted Brooks, I refuse any other kind of ketchup.

Finally, there was a time when I used to bicycle from Blm to Green Gables.  All that work just to have one of their burgers.  Well, and a beer.

Most of this stuff became off limits when I found out I had celiac disease 5 or 6 years ago.  Bah.

Steve, I have that receipe for Chili Mac and I think it's better than what they have, especially now.   I go to Hy-Vee to get the Brooks Tangy Ketcup and Ray's chili dog sauce, which my receipe calls for.   I haven't made it in quite a while so hope they still carry them.   I was just telling my Granddaughter, not long ago, I was getting hungry for it and she loves it, too.   It makes too much for one person, so I fix it for her and usually ask others to join us.

Sandy, I am tempted to make some of that decadent stuff.  Got the Brooks but will need to look for the chili sauce.

I recall the saga of Gus Belt and Maplewood Country Club.  They wouldn't let him in because his reputation was a bit unsavory so he bought the place and turned it into to pasture for future hamburger.  That big white house at the corner of Jersey and Towanda was the old clubhouse ...... and he moved in?   I recall running some ot this by Jack Keefe, who has been accused of knowing more about Bloomington than anybody.  I think he disabused me of some of it.   (I am luring him in.)
