Steven B. Huffman

November 1, 1946 ~ January 12, 2020 (age 73)

Steven B Huffman passed surrounded by his family on January 12th, 2020. Steven is survived by his wife Kathryn (nee Due), his daughters Elizabeth Huffman (Adam Moen) and Rebecca Huffman, sister Sharon Tepper, and niece Stacy Tepper. He is further survived by his sister-in-law Christine Due; his brother and sister-in-law James and Colleen Due; and his nieces and nephews, Maria, Joshua, Aiden, Ayla, and Keelan.

Steve was born to Marie (nee Iery) and Luther Huffman on November 1, 1946 in Bloomington, Illinois. Throughout his childhood, he loved athletics, playing basketball competitively in high school, and winning an athletic scholarship to DePauw University in Indiana, from which he graduated. Soon after graduating, he began working for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), as a teacher for Hopkins Street School where he met his wife Kathy. He soon found education was his calling, moving on to be Vice Principal at Hopkins while simultaneously earning his Master’s degree. He moved on to be Vice Principal at Grant Street School, and Principal at Greenfield Elementary. His career continued to move forward and he spent the remainder of his time in MPS as an administrator, overseeing multiple elementary schools. He was a champion for public Montessori education, serving on the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) boards both globally and in the U.S. After he retired from MPS, he was instrumental in building teacher training and licensing programs at MTECH and Alverno College.

Outside of work, Steve was an avid gardener. He was an artistic craftsman, continually refinishing wood pieces to look like heirloom projects, and worked tirelessly on the family’s home on the east side of Milwaukee. He loved to travel, including visiting Amsterdam several times a year during the height of his involvement in AMI. He remained a fan of sports, especially the Milwaukee Brewers.

Above everything, Steve held his friends and family most dear and displayed that love every day of his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Southern Poverty Law Center would be appreciated.

There will be a Celebration of Steven’s Life on Saturday, January 25th at 10:30 AM followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 AM at Northshore Funeral Services Chapel.Northshore Funeral Services; 3601 N. Oakland Ave;  Shorewood, WI 53211
