The memorial service for Edward L. Pointer, formerly of Normal, will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Bloomington. The Rev. Spencer Gillespie will officiate. The Delmer D. Darrah 33rd Degree club, has been asked to serve as pall bearers. A Masonic service will precede the church service.
 
Mr. Pointer died July 30, 2000 at his home in Weslaco, Texas after a lengthy illness.
 
Memorials made to made to the Permanent Fund Valley of Bloomington, P.O. Box 3695, Bloomington, or to the First Baptist Church of Bloomington, or to the donor’s choice.
 
Mr. Pointer was born March 31, 1918, the son of Perry L. and O. Alma Atkins Pointer. He married Juanita F. Slavens on Sept. 12, 1938 at Brazil Indiana. She survives.
 
Other survivors include three children. Ed L. Pointer Jr., Weslaco; Ronald E. (Alexandra) Pointer, Abilene Texas, and Judith F. (Joseph) Jenkins, Normal; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.
 
Mr. Pointer received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Illinois State University. He served as a teacher and coach in the Bloomington school system for 35 years, during which time he coached football, baseball, basketball, track, and cross country as well as teaching physical education and health. During his career he was a positive influence on more than 6,000 young men.
 
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
