Hermann Boeckmann, teacher, dies at 39


Hermann Boeckmann, 39, of 1102 Eastholme, a University High School teacher, died
of a heart attack Sunday night. He was dead on arrival at 11pm at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was taken to the Flinspach-Kurth Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm Tuesday.

The funeral will be at 2pm Wednesday in Bloomington’s Second Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Robert W. Youngs officiating. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery.

Deputy Coroner Clyde S. Hibbens conducted an inquiry Sunday night.

Mr. Boeckmann joined the U high mathematics department in 1965 after teaching nine years at Bloomington High School.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University in 1954 and his master’s from ISU in 1958. He had done advanced graduate work at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and Ball State University, Muncie Ind.

Active in Illinois and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics groups, Mr. Boeckmann was the author of a programmed text in high school geometry. He was a writer for Minnemath Project at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, in 1963 and 1964.

He was secretary at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1960-61. He had been a guest lecturer for National Science Foundation Institutes on mathematics, attending such institutes at Purdue and Ball State.

Memorials may be made to the Second Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Boeckmann was a Sunday School teacher at the Second Presbyterian Church.

He was born Nov. 22, 1931, in Springfield, a son of Henry and Wilhelmina Thyoden Boeckmann. He married Joyce Wessels on June 10, 1956 in Fairbury.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Julie, Eric, and Beth, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Wilhelmina Boeckmann, Greenview; a sister, Mrs. Hermina Dowell, Greenview; a brother, Robert, Greenview.

He was preceded in death by his father.
